Xenograft versus extraction alone for ridge preservation after tooth removal: a clinical and histomorphometric study.

BACKGROUND: The preservation of bone volume immediately after tooth removal might be necessary to optimize the success of implant placement in terms of esthetics and function. The objectives of this randomized clinical trial were two-fold: 1) to compare the bone dimensional changes following tooth extraction with extraction plus ridge preservation using corticocancellous porcine bone and a collagen membrane; and 2) to analyze and compare histologic and histomorphometric aspects of the extraction-alone sites to the grafted sites. METHODS: Forty subjects who required tooth extraction and implan

Evaluation of periodontal changes following intra-alveolar prosthesis for maxillary cheek tooth extraction in ponies.

This study investigated the placement of an intra-alveolar prosthesis of bone substitute on gingival/periodontal health in 5 ponies following repulsion of cheek teeth 108 and 208. In each pony, one randomly chosen alveolus was allowed to heal by second intention while the other was filled with a non-resorbable, biocompatible bone substitute. At 6, 12 and 24-months after surgery, both maxillary arches were evaluated for wear abnormalities and for gingival health using a periodontal scoring system. Recorded changes included development of overgrowths on mandibular cheek teeth, widening of maxill

Injectable bone substitute to preserve alveolar ridge resorption after tooth extraction: a study in dog.

The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy of a ready-to-use injectable bone substitute on the prevention of alveolar ridge resorption after tooth extraction. Maxillary and mandibular premolars were extracted from 3 Beagle dogs with preservation of alveolar bone. Thereafter, distal sockets were filled with an injectable bone substitute (IBS), obtained by combining a polymer solution and granules of a biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramic. As a control, the mesial sockets were left unfilled. After a 3 months healing period, specimens were removed and prepared for histomorphometr

[The nonhealing of the buccal mucosa after tooth extraction. Apropos a case of histiocytosis X].

We report a case of eosinophilic granuloma falsely diagnosed as a radicular cyst in a 28-year-old patient. Between August 1996 and June 1997, successful extraction [correction of avulsion] of teeth 36 and 37 was followed by non-healing of the mucosa in the corresponding sockets. Three bone biopsies were needed to establish the diagnosis of histiocytosis X. In case of non-healing of the intraoral mucosa after tooth extraction [correction of avulsion], the first step is to rule out a malignant tumor. A clinical and radiographic work-up as well as biopsy are needed. Less common conditions such as

Inflammatory dentigerous cysts of children treated by tooth extraction and decompression--report of four cases.

Inflammatory dentigerous cysts are only found in the mixed dentition. The four cases presented here illustrate the uncomplicated behavior of these cysts when properly treated. By extracting the infected primary teeth, opening the cyst and ensuring continuous drainage, it is possible to achieve spontaneous eruption of the involved permanent teeth into the dental arch even if they are badly dislocated. Simultaneous with the eruption of the permanent teeth, ossification of the bony defect can take place. The reparatory process is completed in one to two years.

Pharmacokinetics and the pharmacodynamic action of midazolam in young and elderly patients undergoing tooth extraction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether age-dependent pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic alterations account for a more pronounced response to benzodiazepines among elderly patients. METHODS: Twelve young patients and 10 elderly patients received an intravenous dose of 0.05 or 0.03 mg/kg midazolan, respectively, before third molar extraction. Postoperative pain was treated with 30 mg dihydrocodeine. Serum concentrations of midazolam and sedative effects were monitored with visual analog scales and choice reaction time measurements for 6 hours. Test values above baseline were integrated, and pharmaco

Histologic study of the effects of occlusal hypofunction following antagonist tooth extraction in the rat.

A histologic study was done to observe the influence of occlusal hypofunction on periodontal tissues and the physiologic drift process, and to elucidate the origin of periodontal ligament narrowing. Twenty-four Wistar rats were used. Hypofunction was induced by extracting the right maxillary molars. Histologic observations were reported on the right lower jaws which were fixed, decalcified, sectioned and stained according to classical histologic methods. Two groups of five animals each were used for a complementary study study using sequential fluorescent labeling in order to evaluate the bone

Investigation of Morphological Changes of the Soft Tissue in the Aesthetic Zone: A 3D Virtual Analysis after Conventional Tooth Extraction and Benex® Extraction.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative resorption of hard and soft tissues occurs as a consequence of tooth extraction. The Benex®-Control extractor allows minimally invasive extraction of the tooth without causing pronounced iatrogenic trauma. The aim of this study was to verify whether the resorption of the tissues after extraction can be reduced by using the Benex® system compared to the conventional extraction method. METHODS: Postoperative intraoral scans were superimposed after surgery (t0), after 7 days (t1), after 14 days (t2), after 30 days (t3), after 60 days (t4), and after 90 days (t5) within

Pulsed radiofrequency treatment for the management of trigeminal neuropathic pain following tooth extraction: A case report.

Post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathic pain is one of the rare complications that could follow orofacial procedures such as dental extraction. The incidence of this type of pain following craniofacial trauma ranges between 3% and 13% depending on the type of surgery. The inferior alveolar and lingual nerves are commonly affected following molar tooth extraction. Pain usually differs from one patient to another concerning intensity and distribution. Pulsed radiofrequency treatment is one of the most widely used techniques in chronic pain management. It focuses on generating heat using radiofrequ

Interleukin-4-loaded calcium alginate composite granules for hemostasis and alveolar bone regeneration after tooth extraction.

PURPOSE/AIM: Tooth extraction often leads to postoperative bleeding and alveolar bone loss, complicating the healing process. This study aimed to develop interleukin-4 (IL-4)-loaded calcium alginate composite granules (CA@IL-4) as a dual-functional biomaterial to synergistically address these challenges by promoting both hemostasis and bone regeneration. METHODS: The CA@IL-4 composite granules were successfully synthesized and characterized. Their biocompatibility and structural stability were evaluated in vitro. The efficacy of the granules was further investigated in a rat tooth extraction
