Anesthesia alters the response properties of neurons in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). Barbiturates decrease spontaneous activity and the prevalence of inhibitory responses, so that DCN principal cells show less inhibition by narrowband stimuli (e.g. tones at best frequency). Here we present the effects on cat DCN of anesthesia using isoflurane plus nitrous oxide (N2O). Because the cellular anesthetic mechanisms of isoflurane differ from those of pentobarbital, the effects of the two anesthetics in DCN might be different. The strength of two inhibitory circuits in the DCN, the narrowband a

Differential, histochemical and immunohistochemical changes were observed in hepatocytes from immediately to 7 days after isoflurane or sevoflurane exposure (at H 0 to on Day 7) to study the process of development and recovery in anesthetic-induced hepatic injury. A total of 570 7-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats with or without phenobarbital treatment were exposed to isoflurane or sevoflurane in 100%, 21%, or 10% oxygen, or to 10% oxygen alone for 2h. In phenobarbital-treated rats, hepatocytes both with and without anesthetic exposure markedly changed in 10% oxygen at H 0. Glycogen and ribos

BACKGROUND: The combination of isoflurane anesthesia and mechanical ventilation reduces urinary output and promotes redistribution of a crystalloid bolus into the extravascular space. The authors hypothesized that mechanical ventilation rather than isoflurane causes this alteration.
METHODS: The fate of a 25-ml/kg, 20-min, 0.9% saline fluid bolus was studied in four different experiments per sheep: while conscious and spontaneously ventilating (CSV), while conscious and mechanically ventilated (CMV), while anesthetized with isoflurane and mechanical ventilated (ISOMV), and while anesthetized

UNLABELLED: When compared with thiopental and isoflurane, propofol and sevoflurane are associated with a faster return to wakefulness after anesthesia. Yet their wider usage in inpatient surgery has been restrained by concerns regarding their acquisition costs and by lack of studies demonstrating improved patient outcome. We randomly allocated 453 adult surgical inpatients to one of four anesthetic regimens (thiopental-isoflurane, propofol-isoflurane, propofol induction and maintenance, or sevoflurane induction and maintenance) and measured their rate and quality of recovery. We found no signi

BACKGROUND: The effects of desflurane, sevoflurane, and isoflurane on left ventricular-arterial coupling and mechanical efficiency were examined and compared in acutely instrumented dogs.
METHODS: Twenty-four open-chest, barbiturate-anesthetized dogs were instrumented for measurement of aortic and left ventricular (LV) pressure (micromanometer-tipped catheter), dP/dtmax, and LV volume (conductance catheter). Myocardial contractility was assessed with the end-systolic pressure-volume relation (Ees) and preload recruitable stroke work (Msw) generated from a series of LV pressure-volume diagrams

The analgesic effect of subanaesthetic concentrations of ether, trichloroethylene, methoxyflurane and halothane has been investigated previously using either clinical assessment or pain threshold measurements, but with conflicting results. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the analgesic effect of isoflurane using experimental pain models. We studied 12 healthy volunteers at three randomly chosen subanaesthetic isoflurane concentrations: low (0.10-0.14 vol%), middle (0.16-0.20 vol%) and high (0.22-0.26 vol%). We used thermal pain detection and pain tolerance thresholds to argon l

Cerebral blood flow response to changes in PaCO2 was studied in the edematous cerebral cortex of 19 patients with malignant supratentorial tumors using laser Doppler flowmetry technology. General anesthesia for craniotomy was induced with thiopental, 3-5 mg/kg i.v., and N2O, 60% in O2. In random sequence, 8 patients were assigned to receive fentanyl, 6 +/- 1.6 (SEM). mug/kg i.v.; the other 11 received isoflurane, 0.56% end-tidal + 0.07 (SEM). After a craniotomy bone flap was turned and the dura was opened, laser flowmetry probes were placed over surgically undisturbed cortex that was known to

In 13 patients, the effects on cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) of isoflurane and halothane administered in a clinically relevant situation were studied. Measurements were performed during fentanyl/nitrous oxide (65%) anesthesia together with moderate hyperventilation (PaCO2 approx 4.5 kPa), and repeated after addition of 0.65 MAC of isoflurane (n = 6) or halothane (n = 7). CBF was measured after intravenous administration of 133xenon and CMRO2 was calculated from the arterial venous differences of oxygen content (AVDO2) determined in arterial and jugular

Gut motility is partly driven by underlying rhythmic electrical activity called slow waves. The origin and propagation of these electrical events are studied extensively in anesthetized animal models. However, the effects of anesthesia on slow waves remain unclear. This study examined how propofol and isoflurane influence spatiotemporal features of gastric slow waves, anterior-posterior coupling, and the efficacy of gastric pacing. Pigs were anesthetized with propofol (n = 7) and isoflurane (n = 8), and baseline electrical activity was measured using high-resolution surface-contact electrode a

Hypotension is a common and potentially life-threatening complication of general anaesthesia in dogs. Due to the combination of cardiovascular side effects of many anaesthetic, sedative and analgesic drugs used peri-operatively hypotension is frequently reported even in healthy dogs undergoing elective procedures. Several treatment options for hypotension have been advocated. Potential treatments include rapid administration of either crystalloid or colloid fluids; pharmacological treatments to increase cardiac output and/or systemic vascular resistance; or reduction in the delivery of the vol

General anesthesia has been widely used in surgical procedures. Propofol and isoflurane are the most commonly used injectable and inhaled anesthetics, respectively. The various adverse effects induced by propofol and isoflurane are highly associated with the anesthetic-dependent change of brain activities. In this work, we aim to delineate a brain-wide neuronal activity landscape of injectable versus inhaled anesthetics to understand the neural basis underlying the different physiological effects induced by these two major types of anesthetics. Through detailed scanning of the whole mouse brai

We investigated the effect of isoflurane and ketamine-xylazine anesthesia on the positron emission tomography (PET) tracer [18F]SynVesT-1 in the mouse brain. [18F]SynVesT-1 PET scans were performed in C57BL/6J mice in five conditions: isoflurane anesthesia (ANISO), ketamine-xylazine (ANKX), awake freely moving (AW), awake followed by isoflurane administration (AW/ANISO) or followed by ketamine-xylazine (AW/ANKX) 20 min post tracer injection. ANISO, ANKX and AW scans were also performed in mice administered with levetiracetam (LEV, 200 mg/kg) to assess non-displaceable binding. Metabolite analy

Animal research in intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is mainly performed in rodent models. Previously, intraperitoneal (I.P.) injections with ketamine-xylazine mixtures were used. Nowadays, volatile anesthetics (isoflurane) are more common. However, the impact of the anesthetic method on intestinal IRI has not been investigated. We aim to analyze the different anesthetic methods and their influence on the extent of intestinal IRI in a rat model. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used to investigate the effect of I.P. anesthesia on 60 min of intestinal ischemia and 60 min of reperfusion

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is used for tumor evaluation. In veterinary medicine, anesthesia is an essential tool during the PET scanning process. However, the changes in FDG uptake in dogs that have undergone anesthesia for a longer duration have not been studied. This study aimed to analyze the influence of isoflurane anesthesia on FDG uptake in dogs undergoing PET. A crossover design was implemented by exposing 3 groups of 6 dogs to different durations of anesthesia (60, 90, and 150 minutes). Inhalation anesthesia was maintained throughout the scanning pr

BACKGROUND: Sometimes it is necessary to use sedatives or even general anaesthetics to examine animals with spinal cord injuries. These drugs may affect spinal reflexes, alter the outcome of neurological examinations, and make it difficult to diagnose location of the lesion.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of five pre-anaesthetic and anaesthetic agents commonly used in clinics on spinal reflexes in dogs.
METHODS: Ten native adult dogs were participated in three groups. In all groups, the dogs were premedicated with medetomidine and midazolam; then, in the first

BACKGROUND: The bispectral index (BIS) is an anaesthesia monitoring technique able to assess the level of central nervous system depression in humans and various animal species. In birds, it has been validated in chickens undergoing isoflurane anaesthesia. The aim of this study was to evaluate in an avian species the influence of isoflurane and sevoflurane on BIS, each at different minimum anaesthetic concentrations (MAC) multiples, alone or combined with butorphanol or medetomidine. Ten chickens (5 males and 5 females) underwent general anaesthesia with isoflurane or sevoflurane alone, and co
