Emotional Distress in Portuguese Cancer Patients: The Use of the Emotion Thermometers (ET) Screening Tool.

Cancer patients may experience significant distress. The "Emotion Thermometers" (ETs) are a short visual analogue scale used to screen patients for psychosocial risk. This study aimed to assess emotional distress in a large sample of cancer patients attending psychological services at an non-governmental organization (NGO), and to explore factors that may contribute to it. The ETs were answered by 899 cancer patients. They were, on average, 59.9 years old, the majority were female, had breast cancer, were under treatment or were disease-free survivors, and reported high levels of emotional dis

High patient satisfaction and increased physical activity following a remote multidisciplinary team multiple myeloma clinic.

PURPOSE: Patients with multiple myeloma suffer from disease-related complications such as bone destruction, toxicities from repeated therapies and age-related co-morbidities. With improved treatment options, patients are living longer and have specific survivorship needs such as low exercise levels that need to be addressed. In this study, we designed, implemented and evaluated a multidisciplinary team (MDT) myeloma clinic that provided participants with tailored exercise and lifestyle advice. METHODS: The Promoting Individualised Self-Management and Survivorship (PrISMS) clinic was set up in

A prospective, randomized trial of patient-reported outcome measures to drive management decisions in hematology and oncology.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians have limited time during patient encounters which can result in patients' concerns not being addressed. This study's objective was to test whether an electronic patient-reported outcome quality of life tool (PROQOL) in which patients identify their primary concern during clinic visits improves cancer patient quality of life (QOL). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This single center non-blinded prospective clinical trial randomized patients (2:1) to PROQOL versus usual care (UC). Two patient cohorts were enrolled: those with hematologic malignancies (multiple myeloma [MM] or light

Symptom burden and health-related quality of life six months after hyperbaric oxygen therapy in cancer survivors with pelvic radiation injuries

Abstract Purpose Late radiation tissue injuries (LRTIs) after treatment for pelvic cancer may impair health related quality of life (HRQoL). Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an adjuvant therapy for LRTIs, but limited studied. The aim of this study was to explore the development and association between symptoms of LRTI and HRQoL following hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Methods A pretest–posttest design was used to evaluate the changes in pelvic LRTIs and HRQoL from baseline (T1), immediately after treatment (T2) and at six-month follow-up (T3). EPIC and EORTC-QLQ-C30 were used to assess LRTIs and HRQ

Health-related quality of life in patients with hematologic malignancies treated with chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy: review and current progress.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has transformed the care of patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell-derived hematologic malignancies. To date, six CAR T-cell therapies, targeting either CD19 or B-cell maturation antigen, have received regulatory approval. Along with the promising survival benefit, CAR T-cell therapy is associated with potentially life-threatening adverse events, including cytokine release syndrome and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome. While clinical trials evaluating CAR T-cell therapy consistently report the incidence of these adverse eve

Mechanism of action of Asparagus officinalis extract against multiple myeloma using bioinformatics tools, in silico and in vitro study.

Introduction: Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) is a perennial flowering plant species. Its main components have tumor-prevention, immune system-enhancement, and anti-inflammation effects. Network pharmacology is a powerful approach that is being applied increasingly to research of herbal medicines. Herb identification, study of compound targets, network construction, and network analysis have been used to elucidate how herbal medicines work. However, the interaction of bioactive substances from asparagus with the targets involved in multiple myeloma (MM) has not been elucidated. We explored t

Influence of PSMB6 and PSMB9 Genetic Polymorphisms on Bortezomib-Based Therapy Response in Newly Diagnosed Multiple Myeloma.

BACKGROUND: Bortezomib (BTZ)-based regimens play a crucial role in the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM), significantly improving patient outcomes. BTZ, a proteasome inhibitor, interferes with cellular processes essential for cancer cell growth and survival, resulting in high response rates. Its use in initial and recurrent treatment strategies has been associated with extended disease control and improved long-term outcomes, contributing to overall survival. This study aimed to delineate the clinical characteristics of newly diagnosed MM patients and investigate the influence of single nucle

Opportunities for Participation in Randomized Controlled Trials for Patients with Multiple Myeloma: Trial Access Depends on Restrictive Eligibility Criteria and Patient Expectations.

Randomized controlled trials (RCT) are the driver of therapeutic innovations. However, it has been frequently shown that less than 5% of adult cancer patients enroll in clinical trials, although 70% of patients are considered as being willing to participate. Barriers to trial participation have been extensively studied. Although there is evidence that trial participation correlates with improved survival and reduced mortality, the rate of participation has not changed substantially. We provide retrospective data from a single-center analysis of 411 patients with multiple myeloma (MM) who were

Decision making in surgical treatment of chronic low back pain: the performance of prognostic tests to select patients for lumbar spinal fusion.

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is one of the main causes of disability in the western world with a huge economic burden to society. As yet, no specific underlying anatomic cause has been identified for CLBP. Imaging often reveals degenerative findings of the disc or facet joints of one or more lumbar motion segments. These findings, however, can also be observed in asymptomatic people. It has been suggested that pain in degenerated discs may be caused by the ingrowth of nerve fibers into tears or clefts of the annulus fibrosus or nucleus pulposus, and by reported high levels of pro-inflammatory

Experiences and preferences for psychosocial support: a qualitative study exploring the views of patients with chronic haematological cancers.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with chronic haematological cancers are often treated on a relapsing-remitting pathway, which may extend for many years. Such diagnoses are associated with uncertainties that often cause anxiety and distress, meaning patients (and families) are susceptible to potentially prolonged emotional difficulties, across the cancer journey. Experiences and preferences regarding psychosocial needs and support over time are relatively unexplored, which this study aimed to address. SETTING AND DESIGN: Set within the UK's Haematological Malignancy Research Network (an ongoing populatio

Adaptation and Evaluation of a Symptom-Monitoring Digital Health Intervention for Patients With Relapsed and Refractory Multiple Myeloma: Pilot Mixed-Methods Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: Relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) is a bone marrow cancer that requires systemic treatment, which often results in severe symptom burden. Recent studies have found that electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) interventions implemented in the clinic setting have had positive outcomes for other oncology populations. Evidence of the efficacy of a similar approach is lacking for patients with RRMM. OBJECTIVE: Recent recommendations for digital health interventions call for the publication of descriptions of iterative development processes in order to improve reproduci
