Early Intervention in Class II Division 1 Malocclusion Using an Activator Appliance: A Case Study.

The field of orthodontics has traditionally been regarded as the primary specialty within dentistry. As per Dr. Tweed's recommendation, historical treatment approaches often entailed the extraction of four premolar teeth. Nonetheless, early orthodontic intervention can frequently obviate the necessity for extractions, thus preserving the integrity, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the dentition. This case report details a non-extraction approach for managing a developing skeletal Class II malocclusion, characterized by a skeletal disharmony between the maxilla and mandible. The chosen tr

Localized sequential use of resilient lining to generate orthodontic force in thermoformed active removable appliances.

A new modality of orthodontic treatment based on the thermoformed appliance was developed and trialled clinically. A light-cured resilient lining material commonly used for denture relining was placed locally and sequentially in thermoformed appliances to generate orthodontic forces. The new method appeared to be effective. All the presented cases showed substantial improvement in dental alignment. A number of orthodontic movements were demonstrated. Localized use of resilient lining in thermoformed orthodontic appliances appeared to be a promising alternative to other thermoformed active remo

Effect of appliance reactivation after decay of initial activation on osteoclasts, tooth movement, and root resorption.

Clinical orthodontists frequently reactivate appliances following decay. Studies of tooth movement and tissue responses following reactivations indicate that linear tooth movement and rapid recruitment of osteoclasts can be achieved if reactivation is timed to coincide with the latter part of the bone remodeling cycle initiated by the first activation. Both can be delayed if reactivations are timed for the early part of the previous cycle. The objective of this study was to examine tooth movement, root resorption, and osteoclast recruitment following appliance reactivation after the first acti

Assessment of instrumental activities of daily living in patients with cognitive impairment based on their ability to use household appliances.

BackgroundDetecting life disability is crucial in diagnosing dementia; however, early detection has proven challenging with previous assessment scales. This study focused on an individual's ability to use household appliances as a means of detecting life disability.ObjectiveThe objectives of this study are threefold: (1) to compare the ability to use household appliances between the non-dementia and dementia groups, (2) to determine whether the level of life disability based on the ability to use appliances is at the level of diagnosed dementia or non-dementia, and (3) to explore the impact of

A novel active intraoral appliance for presurgical orthopaedic treatment in patients with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Management of the protruding/deviated premaxilla in patients with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate is a challenging problem for surgeons and orthodontists. Various passive and active methods have been developed for the presurgical orthopaedic treatment. However, most of these treatments are complicated and laborious for the patient's parents and clinicians. Here, we describe our original active intraoral appliance comprising two components, that is, the premaxillary and palatine process plates, connected with two elastic chains, and we assess its therapeutic efficacy. Effect of mandibular position achieved using an oral appliance on genioglossus activity in healthy adults during sleep.

BACKGROUND: Oral appliances (OAs) are generally designed to displace the mandible anteriorly and downward, to increase the airway patency. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between genioglossus (GG) muscle activity and mandibular position, considering both anterior and vertical displacements during sleep. METHODS: Seven healthy male adults aged 29.4 ± 1.99 years were evaluated. Maxillary and mandibular OAs were fabricated from 2-mm-thick resin plates with pressure-welding. The activity of the left GG was recorded using two silver ball electrodes attached to the lingual edge

The design of non-occlusal intraoral appliances on hard palate and their effect on masseter muscle activity during sleep.

This study aimed to reveal whether masseter muscle activity during sleep is affected by the difference in design of non-occlusal intraoral appliances on hard palate. Eight healthy Japanese participants were selected and wore each of the four types of appliances (horse shoe, thin, thick and medium thick) during sleep for one week with a one week interval without appliance during sleep. A masseter muscle electromyograph (EMG) was recorded during sleep. The EMG activities were analyzed by calculating the number of bursts per hour, episodes per hour, and bursts per episode. The EMG parameters with

Privacy-Preserving Ambient Sensing for Activities of Daily Living: Multimodal Radar-Thermal Human Activity Recognition and Smart Plug Appliance Recognition.

Continuous monitoring of Activities of daily living (ADLs) requires sensing systems that are privacy-preserving, low-power, and robust to environmental variation. Ambient sensing technologies provide an alternative to RGB video and wearable devices, but individual sensing modalities exhibit characteristic limitations. Sparse mmWave radar provides strong motion sensitivity but limited posture detail, low-resolution thermal sensing preserves posture-related spatial information, and smart plug telemetry captures only appliance-mediated behavioural interaction. To address these limitations, this p

Combination of Active and Passive Orthodontic Appliances for Treatment of Linguoverted Mandibular Canine Teeth in 2 Shiba Inu Dogs.

Linguoverted mandibular canine (LMC) teeth are a common form of malocclusion in dogs. If left untreated, contact between the mandibular canine tooth crown tips and the palatal mucosa can result in ulceration, inflammation, infection, and potentially the formation of an oronasal fistula. Various treatment modalities have been described, including both active and passive orthodontic techniques. This report describes the combined use of an active appliance (elastic power chain) and a passive appliance (inclined plane) for the correction of unilateral and bilateral LMC teeth in 2 Shiba Inu dogs. Modified Activation Technique for Nasal Stent of Nasoalveolar Molding Appliance for Columellar Lengthening in Bilateral Cleft Lip/Palate.

Bilateral cleft lip/cleft palate is associated with nasal deformities typified by a short columella. The presurgical nasoalveolar molding (NAM) therapy approach includes reduction of the size of the intraoral alveolar cleft as well as positioning of the surrounding deformed soft tissues and cartilages. In a bilateral cleft patient, NAM, along with columellar elongation, eliminates the need for columellar lengthening surgery. Thus the frequent surgical intervention to achieve the desired esthetic results can be avoided. This article proposes a modified activation technique of the nasal stent fo
