Air pollution and groundwater pollution in conjunction with agricultural activity were investigated in Antayla province on the Turkish Mediterranean coast. The air pollution was investigated in terms of gas-phase nitric acid (HNO3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ammonia (NH3), and particulate matter for a 6-month period in the atmosphere using a "filter pack" system, which was developed and optimized in our laboratory. Soil and groundwater samples were collected from paddy fields in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River Basin to study the occurrence and the risks associated with organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in soil and groundwater. The residual levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the dust fall around Lake Chaohu were measured using gas chromatography mass spectrometry from April 2010 to March 2011. The fluxes, components, temporal-spatial variations, and sources of OCPs were also analyzed. Non-viable eggs of Morelet's crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) were collected from Gold Button (GBL) and New River lagoons (NRL) in northern Belize and screened for organochlorine (OC) compounds using gas chromatography (GC) with electron capture detection (ECD). We report on two patients with a history of chronic exposure to organochlorine insecticides who developed clinical and electromyographic signs and symptoms of chronic motor neuron disease. Measurements of aldrin, lindane and heptachlor confirmed the intoxication. We emphasize the importance of searching for toxic and environmental factors in cases of motor neuron disease especially in Third World countries, where workers usually wear no adequate protective equipment.

The kinetic parameters of liver microsomal vinyl oxide synthetase as well as their modifications under the influence of various pretreatments have been evaluated, using 1,1,2-trichlorethylene (TCE) as a substrate. The results were correlated with those obtained using aldrin oxide synthetase and benzpyrene hydroxylase as typical cytochrome P-450 dependent enzymatic activity. The treatments of animals with chemical carcinogens selectively increase the affinity of those enzymes for their substrates.

In this study a laboratory-made superheated water system was applied in order to extract some pesticides from sand, sediment and soil samples. Extraction efficiencies were investigated at different time intervals with regard to temperature, type and amount of organic modifier. Pesticides were removed from the aqueous extract using dichloromethane as a trapping solvent.
