Branchio-oto-renal syndrome (BOR, Melnick-Fraser syndrome, MIM#113650) refers to a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by branchial cysts or fistulas, hearing loss, external ear malformation, preauricular pits and renal abnormalities. The authors present three episodes of significant bradycardia in two siblings diagnosed with BOR syndrome during the sevoflurane general anesthesia. There is no published experience of anesthesia with this syndrome. Bradycardia occurred variously at induction, maintenance and immediately prior to emergence and required surgical stimulation, atropine, o

Branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome is a developmental complex presenting with various combinations of ear pits, branchial cleft cysts, deafness and renal anomalies, which is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. This report describes a father and 2 children with BOR syndrome in which gustatory lacrimation (GL) was also present in 2 of them. GL is considered to be a rare, non-hereditary type of anomalous, cranial nerve-end organ innervation. Since lacrimal stenosis, which can clinically mimic GL, is also a feature of the BOR syndrome, future reports require lacrimal reflex testing and duct p

This study reviews nine new families with branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man [OMIM] 113650). Diagnosis was made by studying 10 index cases, and then 22 other previously undetected patients were diagnosed within the nine families. The syndrome consists of conductive, sensorineural, or mixed hearing loss; preauricular pits; structural defects of the outer, middle, or inner ear; renal anomalies; lateral cervical fistulas, cysts, or sinuses; and/or nasolacrimal duct stenosis or fistulas. In our study, all patients first diagnosed in each familial group were reco

The major features of the Branchio-Oto-Renal syndrome (BOR syndrome), an autosomal dominant disorder, are branchial remnants, ear anomalies, deafness and renal dysplasia. We report two family groups affected by the BOR syndrome: in two-thirds of the affected children renal abnormalities led to severe renal insufficiency in early life. The necessity for a meticulous search for renal anomalies in individuals with aural and/or branchial abnormalities is emphasized. In affected families, genetic counselling is suggested.

BACKGROUND: The branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by hearing loss of early onset, preauricular pits, branchial clefts, and early progressive chronic renal failure in up to 40% of family affected members. So far, it has not received due attention in the adult European nephrology literature and because of the combination of deafness with chronic renal failure it may be confused with the Alport syndrome. The BOR syndrome is caused by mutations in the EYA1 gene that maps on chromosome 8q13.3.
METHODS: A three-generation, 20-member large BOR Greek-Cyp

It is well known that the persistence of alterations in the normal embryological development of branchial arches can lead to preauricular and cervical fistulas within a family. However, until 1970, there were no reports of dysplasia affecting the branchial, otic, and renal systems (BOR syndrome) with dominant autosomic inheritance. The authors report on a family with BOR syndrome of different expressivity in three generations, and describe an unusual case of bilateral fistulas of the first and second branchial arches in a newborn.

Advances in molecular genetics have recently revealed that mutations in the EYA1 gene are responsible for branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome in European and other populations. This is the first report confirming that an EYA1 gene mutation is also disease-causing in an Asian population. We have described one Japanese BOR syndrome family showing a novel mutation in exon 7 of the EYA1 gene. There was extensive variation of clinical phenotypes within this family. When the physician is confronted with a BOR family showing a wide variation in clinical expression, molecular genetic testing helps to ac

The present report concerns a case of Branchio-Oto-Renal (BOR) dysplasia. The syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by external ear malformations, branchial fistulas, conductive mixed or sensorineural hearing loss and renal anomalies of varying severity. The types of abnormalities that may be present are numerous and often difficult to identify preoperatively, despite modern imaging techniques. From the literature the reconstructive surgery of the middle ear in patients with the BOR Syndrome often has not been successful. In particular, the Authors report their exp

A sporadic patient with OFC syndrome is described. Distinguishing features were a long face with narrow nose, high arched palate, prominent and dysmorphic ears, long neck, sloping shoulders and clavicles, winged, low, and laterally set scapulae, tetralogy of Fallot, and deafness secondary to cochlear malformation. Some features present in the original family, including lateral cervical fistulae, have suggested that OFC syndrome could be a variant of BOR syndrome. The absence of preauricular tags, lacrimal duct stenosis, and renal malformations, and the presence of distinct facial and radiograp

We report a patient and his family, who have branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome and coexisting mitral valve prolapse. A literature review of BOR syndrome failed to identify any similar families and we report this as a new observation. During the preoperative assessment of a patient with BOR syndrome, tachycardia was noted and a cardiologic examination including echocardiography revealed mitral valve prolapse. Members of his extended family were investigated, including carrying out cardiology and otolaryngology examinations to determine whether they had signs of either BOR syndrome or cardiac pr

A family group with confirmed branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome was investigated in this study. Computerized tomography of the temporal bones has demonstrated that the malformations of the inner ear consist of hypoplastic structural changes within the cochlea with reduced vertical diameters, and absent or hypoplastic semicircular canals and normal endolymphatic ducts. It is concluded that in the present cases, the Mondini malformation of the cochlea is not associated with the BOR syndrome.

Branchio-oto-renal syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects multiple organ systems. Temporal bone abnormalities include the unwound appearance of the cochlea which is common in this syndrome. This appearance can prompt renal imaging and evaluation. Presented here are two cases of branchio-oto-renal syndrome with dysplastic cochleae. A branchial cleft sinus and renal dysplasia were also present in one of the cases.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To describe temporal bone findings using visual inspection and direct measurement on computerized tomography (CT) in individuals with branchio-oto-renal syndrome (BOR). We ask if it is possible for the untrained observer to use a battery of CT observations as a tool in the overall evaluation of the BOR phenotype.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective evaluation of CT findings in individuals with a clinical diagnosis of BOR based on criteria derived from genotype-phenotype analyses.
METHODS: Prospective measurement of temporal bone CT imaging in 21 individuals (42 ears) with BOR

A pedigree of branchio-oto-renal dysplasia (BOR syndrome) is reported. BOR syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder in which affected individuals may have branchial fistulas or cysts, preauricular pits, structural defects of the outer, middle an inner ear with hearing loss, and renal anomalies which may range from mild hypoplasia to complete absence. As shown in our pedigree, all carriers of the gene may not present with all features of the syndrome. In all individuals presenting with preauricular pits and branchial clefts, both otologic and renal investigations should be performed. Genetic

We report a man who had the branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome with crossed renal ectopia. His three children were born with bilateral renal agenesis and the so-called Potter syndrome. This case illustrates the potential severity of the renal anomalies in the BOR syndrome and the inadequacy of oligohydramnios and maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein as screening methods for renal agenesis. This case also implies strongly the necessity for meticulous search for renal anomalies in individuals with the BOR syndrome and proper counseling regarding the possibility of lethal bilateral renal agenesis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Branchio-oto-renal syndrome is an important syndromic cause of hearing loss. Our aim was to determine the test characteristics of the unwound cochlea on temporal bone CT for the diagnosis of branchio-oto-renal syndrome in a cohort of children with hearing loss.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were identified retrospectively with a clinical diagnosis of branchio-oto-renal syndrome and CT imaging of the temporal bones. Age-matched controls were also identified with sensorineural hearing loss not related to a diagnosis of branchio-oto-renal syndrome and CT imaging of the

BACKGROUND: Branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome is a dominant autosomal disorder characterized by phenotypes such as hearing loss, branchial fistulae, preauricular pits, and renal abnormalities. EYA1, the human homolog of the Drosophila "eye absent" gene on chromosome 8q13.3, is recognized as one of the most important genes associated with BOR syndrome.
METHODS: The proposita in this study was a 5-year-old Chinese girl with hearing loss, bilateral otitis media with effusion, microtia, facial hypoplasia, palatoschisis, and bilateral branchial cleft fistulae. The girl's family members, except two

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Temporal bone imaging plays an important role in the work-up of branchio-oto-renal syndrome. Previous reports have suggested that the unwound or offset cochlea is a highly characteristic marker for branchio-oto-renal syndrome. Our goals were to examine the prevalence of this finding in a branchio-oto-renal syndrome cohort and analyze genetic-phenotypic associations not previously established.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study included 38 ears in 19 unrelated individuals with clinically diagnosed branchio-oto-renal syndrome and confirmed mutati
