Usher syndrome, also known as retinitis pigmentosa-dysacusis syndrome, is an extremely rare genetic disorder, characterized by retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and congenital sensorineural hearing loss. It has been estimated to account for 3-6% of the congenitally deaf population, upto 8-33% of individuals with RP and half of all cases with combined deafness and blindness (Vernon M,1969; Boughman JA et al,1983). The prevalence of Usher syndrome have been reported to range from 3.5 to 6.2 per 100,000 in different populations (Vernon M,1969; Boughman JA et al,1983; Yan D et al, 2010). We report a case

Many neurological disorders have been described in combination with sensorineural hearing loss and pigmentary retinopathy. We present the clinicopathological case of such a combination, associated with premature atherosclerosis of large cerebral arteries. In the literature dealing with the combination of deafness and pigmentary retinopathy, none of the many described syndromes was associated with premature atherosclerosis. The mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, early atherosclerosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome can include deafness and blindness. In this synd

Between 1986 and 1988 a door-to-door survey was conducted on a stable rural population of 60,820 in central Ethiopia. Trained lay health workers made a complete census and identified cases with symptoms and signs of neurological disorders, using specially designed questionnaires which, in a previous pilot study, were found to have a sensitivity of 91% and specificity of 85%. Neurological disorders in the rural population were epilepsy, postpoliomyelitis paralysis, mental retardation, peripheral neuropathy (mainly due to leprosy), and deaf-mutism with prevalence rates (cases/100,000 population)

Alstrom syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder disease caused by mutations in the ALMS1 gene, and its typical clinical manifestations include cone-rod retinal dystrophy, sensorineural deafness, obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, hypertriglyceridemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver, dilated cardiomyopathy, and progressive hepatic and renal dysfunction. In this report, we followed up a young male patient presenting with diabetes mellitus, who was later diagnosed with blindness, deafness, hyperlipidemia, obesity, fatty liver, and insulin resistance. Genetic testing revealed a com

Refsum's disease, or heredopathia atactica polyneuritiformis, is a peroxisomal disorder leading to the accumulation of phytanic acid throughout the body. It affects sensory and motor neurons and the skeletal system. Peripheral neuropathy, ataxia, blindness, deafness, and skeletal hyperostosis are significant findings used in the diagnosis of the disease.

BACKGROUND: One in four American adults has a disability. Individuals with disabilities are more likely to have mental health issues and use substances and are less likely to attend substance use rehabilitation compared to individuals without disabilities. However, most research about substance use and substance use rehabilitation does not focus specifically on sensory disabilities.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to test the association between vision and/or hearing loss, lifetime drug use, and lifetime drug rehabilitation.
METHODS: Data files from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surve

This scoping review aims to identify factors that facilitate or hinder labor market participation of people with an acquired hearing and vision impairment, also called acquired deafblindness (ADB). For people with ADB, participation in society is not a given, and work is a key aspect of societal participation. A literature search was conducted in Web of Science, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO via Ovid. The studies included involved people with ADB, results on labor market participation, and a description of at least one facilitator or barrier. Of 2,548 articles identified, 13 met the inclusion and excl

BACKGROUND: Due to their dual sensory impairment, people with congenital deafblindness (CDB) are rarely naturally involved in other people's conversations. Their communication partners find it challenging to include them in group conversations. However, overhearing others communicate is important for developing social and communication skills. Hence, we developed an intervention program to guide communication partners in offering multiparty communication to people with CDB. This article describes how the program was developed through an intervention mapping approach.
METHOD: Intervention mapp

Deafness is the most common form of sensory impairment in humans and is frequently caused by single gene mutations. Interestingly, different mutations in a gene can cause syndromic and nonsyndromic forms of deafness, as well as progressive and age-related hearing loss. We provide here an explanation for the phenotypic variability associated with mutations in the cadherin 23 gene (CDH23). CDH23 null alleles cause deaf-blindness (Usher syndrome type 1D; USH1D), whereas missense mutations cause nonsyndromic deafness (DFNB12). In a forward genetic screen, we have identified salsa mice, which suffe

Cochlear implantation (CI) for deafblindness may have more impact than for non-syndromic hearing loss. Deafblind patients have a double handicap in a society that is more and more empowered by fast communication. CI is a remedy for deafness, but requires revision surgery every 20 to 25 years, and thus placement should be minimally invasive. Furthermore, failed reimplantation surgery will have more impact on a deafblind person. In this context, we assessed the safety of minimally invasive robotically assisted cochlear implant surgery (RACIS) for the first time in a deafblind patient. Standard p

PURPOSE: In the past, cochlear implantation (CI) was not commonly offered to this population due to concerns about limited auditory rehabilitation outcomes. Recent advancements in CI technology and multidisciplinary rehabilitation have expanded candidacy, but outcomes in deafblind patients remain underexplored. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize available evidence on CI outcomes in deafblind individuals.
METHODS: Data sources included PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library from inception to July 20, 2025. Observational studies included adults or childre

INTRODUCTION: Gangliosidoses occur due to inherited deficiency of human beta-galaktosidase, resulting in the accumulation of glicophyngolipides within the lisosomes. Clinical manifestations of lysosomal storage disorders are remarkably heterogeneous, they can apear at any age and each of them can vary from mild to severe conditions.
CASE REPORT: We present a patient with an early, infintile type of GM, gangliosidosis. The facial features were coarse: hypertelorismus, wide nose, depressed nasal bridge with lingual protrusion. From the very first months of life she had severe generalized hypoto

OBJECTIVES: As sensory loss may impact the ability to receive and apply health information, a relationship between sensory loss and health literacy may exist. The purpose of this systematic review was to explore the relationship between hearing, vision and dual sensory loss and health literacy in older adults.
METHODS: Studies examining the relationship between sensory loss and health literacy in older adult populations using a validated health literacy instrument were included. The search was conducted in the CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, AgeLine and REHABdata databases in May-June 2021.

Ischemia and the metabolic disorder it entails would seem to be the pathogenic mechanism behind acute cochlear deafness, irrespective of the triggering process. The prognosis is entirely dependent on the rapid initiation of an effective treatment. At the end of a double-blind therapeutic trial comparing Ginkgo biloba extract and a standard alpha blocker (nicergoline), a significant recovery was observed in both therapeutic groups, but improvement was distinctly better in the Ginkgo biloba group.

INTRODUCTION: Waardenburg's syndrome (WS) is a rare inherited disorder of congenital hearing loss and Pigmentary disturbances of the eyes, hair, skin and neural crest derivatives.
MATERIALS & METHODS: 620 students in a deaf/blind school were examined and four had WS with a frequency of 0.65%. 2 males and 2 females with WS and age ranges between 10-19yrs {mean 15.75yrs.} All 4 subjects had complete blue irides, white forelock and sensorineural hearing loss, and thus met the diagnostic criteria. They were then subjected to Audiometric assessment.
RESULTS: Otoscopy was essentially normal but Au

A patient has been studied in whom an atypical ichthyosiform erythroderma was associated with congenital neurosensory deafness, vascularization of the corneas progressing to blindness, alopecia totalis, abnormalities of the teeth and nails, and postnatal growth deficiency. Twelve other patients with a similar pattern of malformation have been reported previously. This syndrome appears to represent a distinct disorder with a pattern of inheritance which is most likely autosomal recessive.

BACKGROUND: Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) is a devastating acute or subacute neurological disorder caused by thiamine deficiency. Wernicke encephalopathy is characterized by the triad of ocular signs, cerebellar dysfunction, and confusion. Visual loss and hearing loss are less common findings in WE. Here, we report a case of Wernicke encephalopathy in a nonalcoholic liver cirrhosis patient who presented with acute bilateral deafness and bilateral blindness. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old Chinese man presented with a history of bilateral blindness and bilateral hypoacousia for 3 days. He had a
