How Do Adolescents Use Electronic Diaries? A Mixed-Methods Study Among Adolescents With Depressive Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Depression in adolescence is common. Less than half of the adolescents with depression receive mental health care; furthermore, treatment tends to be suspended, and its success rates are low. There is a need for these adolescents to have a safe place to share their thoughts. Studies have shown that writing may be a useful treatment method for people with mental health problems. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the use of an electronic diary (e-diary) among adolescents with depressive symptoms. METHODS: This paper describes a substudy of a randomized controlled trial. We use

Symptoms of Constipation: Relationship Between Questionnaires and Diaries and Impact on Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Widely used to identify constipation in clinical trials and epidemiologic studies, bowel questionnaires have not been adequately validated vs the gold standard approach, diaries. Constipation is associated with poor quality-of-life (QoL). However, the contribution of individual symptoms to QoL is unknown. METHODS: Bowel symptoms (questionnaires and 2-week bowel diaries), somatic symptom scores (range, 0-4), and bowel symptom-related QoL were evaluated in healthy women and women with constipation in the community and clinic. RESULTS: The bowel variables were significantly c

Correlation between novel checkmark-only headache diary and productivity loss and medication effectiveness in migraine patients.

BACKGROUND: Migraine reduces life quality and work productivity through absenteeism and presenteeism. However, existing paper-based headache diaries have limitations (time-consuming interpretation of heterogeneous entries, inadequate capture of work-related outcomes, etc.). We developed a calendar-style diary with checkmark-only entries to address these shortcomings, while maintaining simplicity for sustained patient adherence. In this single-center retrospective observational study, we assessed whether this format captures important information on patients with migraines attending a specializ

Examining the association among adolescents' emotional clarity, emotion differentiation, and the regulation of negative and positive affect using a daily diary approach.

Emotional clarity and emotion differentiation (ED) are two core aspects of the application of emotional knowledge. During adolescence, novel emotional experiences result in temporary decreases of differentiation and clarity. These temporary difficulties might profoundly impact choices of regulatory strategies. And indeed, prior research has shown that lower emotional clarity and emotion differentiation are each associated with higher use of putatively maladaptive emotion regulation strategies in youth. The two constructs, however, are rarely examined together, and it remains unclear how they a

Dating in social anxiety disorder: A daily diary study.

Romantic relationships are vital for health, well-being and quality of life, and an increasing percentage of romantic relations begin via use of dating apps and subsequently progress to dates. In the present study we examined dating application use and dates among individuals with SAD (n = 54) and without SAD (n = 54). Our sample included young adults (age range 18 to 33) who were not in a romantic relationship at the time of the study. For both individuals with SAD and without SAD, half of the participants were men, and half were women. We used a daily diary measurement in which participants

Pilot Feasibility Study of a Hospital-Based Post-Natal Educational Intervention on New Mothers in a BFHI-Compliant Tertiary Referral Center for Neonatal Care.

The immediate post-partum period offers a valuable opportunity for parental education on various health topics. The aim of this study was to pilot test the feasibility in a tertiary referral center for neonatal care of a post-natal educational intervention (the Diary) designed to provide mothers with basic information concerning newborn care and breastfeeding. Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate its effect on exclusive breastfeeding rates at discharge and at 48 h post-discharge, and on maternal perceived support during hospital stay, compared to standard care. A single-center two-phase intervent

Greenspace attributes influence the associations between greenspace exposure and mood among preadolescent children: A daily diary study.

Spending time in greenspace is widely recognized as beneficial for the mood of preadolescent children. However, the day-to-day associations between greenspace exposure (the amount of time spent) and mood remain unclear, particularly regarding the moderating role of greenspace attributes. This study examines the day-to-day associations between greenspace exposure and preadolescent children's mood (including happiness, anxiety, and depression) and explores how greenspace attributes (including environmental quality and safety) moderate these associations using a daily diary approach. Data were co

Adaptation of the urticaria patient daily diary for caregiver completion in pediatric chronic spontaneous urticaria.

Background: The Urticaria Patient Daily Diary (UPDD) assesses patient-reported symptoms (itch, hives, angioedema) and impacts in adults and adolescents with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). Objective: The objective was to adapt the UPDD for caregiver completion for patients ages 2-11 years. Methods: To inform modification of the UPDD, two iterative rounds of hybrid concept-elicitation/cognitive-debriefing interviews were conducted with clinical experts and caregivers of children with CSU recruited via patient organizations in the United States and Canada. After concept elicitation, the par

Dynamic Analysis of the Voiding Patterns in Bladder Diaries Collected in Clinical Practice.

AIMS: The goal of this study is to better understand the mechanisms and phenotypes of urinary urgency through the analysis of voiding patterns of clinical patients recorded in their bladder diaries. METHODS: A recently introduced, powerful dynamic analysis approach was used to analyze bladder diaries of a heterogeneous cohort of 227 patients treated in a single clinical practice. Individual voiding patterns were examined by performing intra-subject correlation analyzes of bladder diary variables and creating multivariable linear regression models. Individuals were clustered based on the chara

Psychometric evaluation of a pediatric functional constipation symptom diary using randomized phase 3 clinical trial data.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are required to assess the efficacy of treatments for functional constipation (FC), which is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders in children. A novel PRO, the Pediatric Functional Constipation Symptom Diary (PFCSD), was developed to assess 7 core symptoms of FC (stool frequency, stool consistency, incomplete evacuation, straining, abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, and fecal incontinence) in pediatric FC patients. Here, we describe the psychometric analyses of the PFCSD using data from a phase 3 clinical trial of linaclotid

Does Context Matter? Daily Diary Study Exploring the Effects of Stressor Intensity and Perceived Controllability on the Relationship Between Emotion Regulation and Affect in Adolescents.

Theoretical accounts emphasize the importance of context sensitivity in emotion regulation, yet research often neglects this. This study explored how adolescents' use of three emotion regulation strategies-cognitive reappraisal, distraction, and rumination-interacted with stressor intensity and perceived controllability to influence daily emotions. A total of 249 adolescents participated in a daily diary study (Mage = 12.73, SDage = 0.78; 63.1% males). Adolescents reported their daily use of emotion regulation strategies, emotional states, and contextual factors. In high-intensity stress situa

Freedom and authority in the Clinical Diary.

The paper discusses some philosophical, ethical and political-philosophical implications of Ferenczi's Clinical Diary, with special regard to the concepts of freedom and authority. These topics are already present in Ferenczi's early writings that explicitly deal with social and political issues, the central concept of which is "individual socialism". The paper also discusses (and publishes in Appendix) two short manuscripts by Ferenczi, written probably in 1920, which attempts to parallel psychoanalysis with Marxism, and with liberal socialism, respectively. It is shown that in 1932, the last

Planning and Developing a Symptom Diary Intervention for Breast Cancer Survivors With Concerns About Medication Brands (ENABLE Study): User-Centered Design Approach.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 80% of breast cancers are estrogen receptor positive, and following initial tumor treatment, patients are prescribed hormone therapy (HT) drugs (tamoxifen, letrozole, anastrozole, and exemestane) for 5-10 years. These drugs are known to cause several side effects. Additionally, a small number of studies have identified that changing medication brands (generics) can negatively affect patients' side effects, attitudes, and acceptance of HT. However, no effective intervention currently exists to address patients' concerns about generic switching. OBJECTIVE: This study e

Men's Perceptions of Non-Cancer Related Lymphoedema: A Qualitative Diary Study.

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by lymphatic dysfunction, resulting in persistent swelling. Although men are significantly affected, their experiences, particularly regarding masculine identity, remain underexplored. This UK-based study examined how men live with non-cancer-related lymphoedema, drawing on hegemonic masculinity and the Health, Illness, Men, and Masculinities (HIMM) framework. A qualitative narrative inquiry was conducted with 12 men who completed solicited diaries over 2 weeks. Thematic and structural analyses identified one overarching theme-vulnerability-and two sub

The PKD Daily: Development and Content Validation of a Hybrid Diary for Tracking Urinary Events in Adults with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD).

INTRODUCTION: For patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), the only approved treatment is tolvaptan, a twice-daily medication that works to slow kidney function decline. Patients on tolvaptan report a considerable burden related to the drug's aquaretic effects which can intensify immediately following a dose of the medication. METHODS: A targeted literature review and individual concept elicitation (CE) interviews with nephrologists and adult patients with ADPKD taking tolvaptan were conducted to inform the development of a hybrid diary, programmed as a smartphone a
