Self-sustained GaIn droplet oscillations by coupled electrochemical and mechanical driving forces.

Self-sustained oscillations of liquid-metal droplets represent a striking example of electrochemical-mechanical coupling in active matter. These liquid-metal droplets immersed in an aqueous solution oscillate toward and away from an electrode, in response to a continuous applied voltage. Recently, these oscillations have been studied in gallium-indium (GaIn) droplets. Though it is understood that the GaIn droplet self-oscillations are driven by surface tension variations, the details of the underlying mechanism remain incompletely understood, in part because previous investigations have relied

Parallel hierarchical gene assembly from oligonucleotide pools on an integrated digital microfluidic platform.

We report an integrated electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) digital microfluidic (DMF) platform for automated gene assembly directly from oligonucleotide pools (OPs). The system is implemented on a glass chip with through-glass vias (TGVs), enabling dense, individually addressable electrodes for programmable droplet manipulation and integrated thermal control for enzymatic reactions. Barcode probes immobilized on a disposable top plate enable sequence-specific capture, spatial partitioning, and on-chip release of oligonucleotides for polymerase cycling assembly (PCA). The platform supports sin

Bridging activity gaps between batch and flow reactor configurations in the electroreduction of carbon dioxide.

To date, the understanding of various modes of CO2 mass transport remains incomplete, impeding the transfer of catalysts identified in the more accessible electrochemical batch cells to high-performance flow cells. In this work, we demonstrate that the meniscus region formed between the electrode and the convex liquid level due to the electrowetting of the catalyst plays a vital role in the CO2RR in batch cells. CO2RR in the meniscus region in batch cells exhibits similar performance with that in flow cells, and the performance disparity between these two configurations largely disappears when

Tubular astigmatism-tunable fluidic lens.

We demonstrate a new means to fabricate three-dimensional liquid lenses which may be tuned in focal length and astigmatism. Using actuation by electrowetting-on-dielectrics, astigmatism in arbitrary directions may be tuned independently, with almost no cross talk between orthogonal orientations. The lens is based on electrodes structured on planar polyimide foils and subsequently rolled, enabling high-resolution patterning of complex electrodes along the azimuthal and radial directions of the lens. Based on a design established through fluidic and optical simulations, the astigmatism tuning is

Graphene-coated meshes for electroactive flow control devices utilizing two antagonistic functions of repellency and permeability.

The wettability of graphene on various substrates has been intensively investigated for practical applications including surgical and medical tools, textiles, water harvesting, self-cleaning, oil spill removal and microfluidic devices. However, most previous studies have been limited to investigating the intrinsic and passive wettability of graphene and graphene hybrid composites. Here, we report the electrowetting of graphene-coated metal meshes for use as electroactive flow control devices, utilizing two antagonistic functions, hydrophobic repellency versus liquid permeability. Graphene coat

A programmable and reconfigurable microfluidic chip.

This article reports an original concept enabling the rapid fabrication of continuous-flow microfluidic chips with a programmable and reconfigurable geometry. The concept is based on a digital microfluidic platform featuring an array of individually addressable electrodes. A selection of electrodes is switched on sequentially to create a de-ionized (DI) water finger specific pattern, while the surrounding medium consists of liquid-phase paraffin. The water displacement is induced by both electrowetting on dielectric and liquid dielectrophoresis phenomena. Once the targeted DI water pattern is

Cross-Scale Synergistic Optimization for Miniature Meta-Liquid Hybrid Zoom Imaging.

Miniaturized zoom imagers often face a three-way trade-off among tunability, chromatic correction, and optical length. Here, we propose a cross-scale synergistic optimization framework for a metasurface-liquid lens hybrid imager, in which electrowetting actuation, system-level aberration correction, and meta-atom phase, group-delay (GD), and fabrication constraints are optimized in a unified design space. The resulting system uses two liquid lenses, two spherical refractive lenses, and one achromatic metalens to realize 1.5 × continuous visible-band zoom over a 4-6 mm focal-length range, a

Integrating Low-Voltage Microfluidics With On-Chip Electrospray Ionization for Miniaturized Protein Analysis.

Low-input proteomics requires analytical strategies that can handle very small volumes while minimizing loss, dilution, and handling steps. Low-voltage electrokinetic microfluidics offers a promising route to this goal by enabling controlled transport, separation, concentration, and droplet manipulation within compact chip-based platforms. This review examines the integration of electrokinetic microfluidics with on-chip electrospray ionization (ESI) for miniaturized protein analysis, with emphasis on how electric-field-driven sample handling can be combined with sensitive mass spectrometric de

Thermal Recovery of Damaged Hydrophobic Coatings in EWOD Devices Using an Integrated Mesh-Patterned Heater.

We propose an integrated electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) device incorporating a mesh-patterned heater to restore damaged hydrophobic coatings and evaluate its recovery performance. Hydrophobic degradation was induced under submersion and falling droplet conditions, and the damage and recovery mechanisms of the coating were examined. A damaged Cytop (CTL-809M) coating was thermally treated using the embedded heater at 200 °C for 24 h, successfully restoring its hydrophobicity. Coating properties before and after recovery were characterized by contact angle (CA) and contact angle hysteresis

Reconfigurable acoustic tweezers based on a programmable droplet array.

Conventional acoustic manipulation relies on either direct acoustic radiation force acting on particles or indirect methods using acoustic streaming generated by acoustic pressure fields to manipulate particles. While acoustic devices generating standing waves can create patterned arrangements of particles and cells, these methods are typically limited to producing regular arrays in static configurations. This study introduces a dynamic acoustic field modulation method to overcome these limitations, significantly enhancing manipulation flexibility. Crucially, the propagation of acoustic energy

Programmable large area digital microfluidic array with integrated droplet sensing for bioassays.

We describe a new device concept for digital microfluidics, based on an active matrix electrowetting on dielectric (AM-EWOD) device. A conventional EWOD device is limited by the number of electrical connections that can be made practically, which restricts the number and type of droplet operations. In an AM-EWOD, the patterned electrodes of a conventional EWOD device are replaced by a thin film transistor (TFT) array, as found in a liquid crystal display (LCD), facilitating independent control of each electrode. The arrays can have many thousand individually addressable electrodes, are fully r

Reversible static-site PCR via dual-phase confinement in digital microfluidics.

Digital microfluidics (DMF) enables programmable manipulation of discrete droplets for multi-step biochemical workflows; however, integrating polymerase chain reaction (PCR) into reconfigurable DMF systems remains challenging due to evaporation, surface fouling, and loss of droplet mobility during PCR. Here, we present a dual-phase pinning system (DPPS) for stable and reversible static-site PCR in DMF. In this approach, an aqueous PCR droplet is locally encapsulated within an immiscible lubricating phase and stabilized through combined mechanical confinement and continuous electrowetting actua

Triple-phase interfaces for electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide.

The CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) offers a promising approach for converting CO2 into valuable products, thereby storing renewable energy in chemical bonds and mitigating CO2 emissions. The process is fundamentally governed by the complex dynamics at the gas (CO2), liquid (H2O), and solid (catalyst) triple-phase interfaces (TPIs), where mass transport, charge transfer, and intermediate stabilization interact and compete. However, the practical performance of the CO2RR remains significantly below the threshold required for industrial applications, hindered by challenges such as liquid w

Modeling of Droplet Impact onto Polarized and Nonpolarized Dielectric Surfaces.

This paper is concerned with simulation of the droplet impact on a dielectric surface, referred to as the dynamic electrowetting-on-dielectric (DEWOD). In particular, we seek to shed more light on the fundamental processes occurring during the impact of an electrically conducting droplet onto a dielectric surface with and without an applied voltage. The liquid in the droplet is an ionic conductor (a leaky dielectric). This work employs an approach based on Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes (CHNS) modeling. The simulations are validated by predicting the equilibrium contact angle, droplet oscillation

Process-Structure-Property Relationships in Meniscus-Confined Electrodeposition of 3D Copper Microcomponents.

Although Meniscus-Confined Electrodeposition (MCED) is a promising micro/nano additive manufacturing technology, achieving precise control over deposition quality still faces significant challenges. This study systematically investigated the effects of applied voltage, withdrawal speed, and electrolyte pH on copper microstructures. Mechanistic analysis revealed that applied voltage drives a "solid-concave-solid" transition via the competition between outward capillary and inward thermal Marangoni flows, followed by a shift to kinetic control, while instantaneously regulating lateral dimensions

Molecular picture of electric double layers with weakly adsorbed water.

Water adsorption energy, Eads, is a key physical quantity in sustainable chemical technologies such as (photo)electrocatalytic water splitting, water desalination, and water harvesting. In many of these applications, the electrode surface is operated outside the point (potential) of zero charge, which attracts counter-ions to form the electric double layer and controls the surface properties. Here, by applying density functional theory-based finite-field molecular dynamics simulations, we have studied the effect of water adsorption energy Eads on surface acidity and the Helmholtz capacitance o

A thin film model for statics and dynamics of electro(de)wetting on soft and liquid dielectrics.

The contact line dynamics of sessile droplets on soft dielectrics under an electric field is crucial for applications in flexible electronics and point-of-care diagnostics. This study presents a reduced-order model based on lubrication theory to investigate the electrohydrodynamic spreading and retraction dynamics of a sessile droplet on a deformable dielectric under the pinned electrode configuration. The mechanical response of the soft dielectric is characterized using the Kelvin-Voigt model, while the influence of the electric field on the interfacial energy is incorporated based on the ele

Electrochemical immunoassay on a microfluidic device with sequential injection and flushing functions.

An integrated microfluidic device with injecting, flushing, and sensing functions was realized using valves that operate based on direct electrowetting. The device consisted of two substrates: a glass substrate with driving and sensing electrodes and a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate. Microfluidic transport was achieved using the spontaneous movement of solutions in hydrophilic flow channels formed with a dry-film photoresist layer. The injection and flushing of solutions were controlled by gold working electrodes, which functioned as valves. The valves were formed either in the channe

LampPort: a handheld digital microfluidic device for loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP).

A major goal in the development of point-of-care (POC) devices is to build them as portable to provide a rapid and effective determination for disease pathogens. In nucleic acid testing, an optical detection system used to monitor the product of nucleic acid amplification has always been a bulky accessory. In this work, we developed a handheld, automatic and detection system-free thermal digital microfluidic (DMF) device for DNA detection by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Droplet manipulation and real-time temperature control systems were integrated into a handheld device. The
