Adaptive Multi-Modal Fusion Framework for Activity Monitoring of People With Mobility Disability.

The development of activity recognition based on multi-modal data makes it possible to reduce human intervention in the process of monitoring. This paper proposes an efficient and cost-effective multi-modal sensing framework for activity monitoring, it can automatically identify human activities based on multi-modal data, and provide help to patients with moderate disabilities. The multi-modal sensing framework for activity monitoring relies on parallel processing of videos and inertial data. A new supervised adaptive multi-modal fusion method (AMFM) is used to process multi-modal human activi

A Machine Learning Classification Model for Monitoring the Daily Physical Behaviour of Lower-Limb Amputees.

There are currently limited data on how prosthetic devices are used to support lower-limb prosthesis users in their free-living environment. Possessing the ability to monitor a patient's physical behaviour while using these devices would enhance our understanding of the impact of different prosthetic products. The current approaches for monitoring human physical behaviour use a single thigh or wrist-worn accelerometer, but in a lower-limb amputee population, we have the unique opportunity to embed a device within the prosthesis, eliminating compliance issues. This study aimed to develop a mode

CAPTURE-24: A large dataset of wrist-worn activity tracker data collected in the wild for human activity recognition.

Existing activity tracker datasets for human activity recognition are typically obtained by having participants perform predefined activities in an enclosed environment under supervision. This results in small datasets with a limited number of activities and heterogeneity, lacking the mixed and nuanced movements normally found in free-living scenarios. As such, models trained on laboratory-style datasets may not generalise out of sample. To address this problem, we introduce a new dataset involving wrist-worn accelerometers, wearable cameras, and sleep diaries, enabling data collection for ove

Feasibility of Using an Armband Optical Heart Rate Sensor in Naturalistic Environment.

Consumer-grade heart rate (HR) sensors including chest straps, wrist-worn watches and rings have become very popular in recent years for tracking individual physiological state, training for sports and even measuring stress levels and emotional changes. While the majority of these consumer sensors are not medical devices, they can still offer insights for consumers and researchers if used correctly taking into account their limitations. Multiple previous studies have been done using a large variety of consumer sensors including Polar® devices, Apple® watches, and Fitbit® wrist bands. The vast

Non-Contact Activity Monitoring Using a Multi-Axial Inertial Measurement Unit in Animal Husbandry.

In this work, a novel method is presented for non-contact non-invasive physical activity monitoring, which utilizes a multi-axial inertial measurement unit (IMU) to measure activity-induced structural vibrations in multiple axes. The method is demonstrated in monitoring the activity of a mouse in a husbandry cage, where activity is classified as resting, stationary activity and locomotion. In this setup, the IMU is mounted in the center of the underside of the cage floor where vibrations are measured as accelerations and angular rates in the X-, Y- and Z-axis. The ground truth of activity is p
