Neanderthals had large and projecting (prognathic) faces similar to those of their putative ancestors from Sima de los Huesos (SH) and different from the retracted modern human face. When such differences arose during development and the morphogenetic modifications involved are unknown. We show that maxillary growth remodelling (bone formation and resorption) of the Devil's Tower (Gibraltar 2) and La Quina 18 Neanderthals and four SH hominins, all sub-adults, show extensive bone deposition, whereas in modern humans extensive osteoclastic bone resorption is found in the same regions. This morph

Feral Pigeons have colonised all corners of the Earth, having developed a close association with humans and their activities. The wild ancestor of the Feral Pigeon, the Rock Dove, is a species of rocky habitats, nesting typically on cliff ledges and at the entrance to large caves. This habit would have brought them into close contact with cave-dwelling humans, a relationship usually linked to the development of dwellings in the Neolithic. We show that the association between humans and Rock Doves is an ancient one with its roots in the Palaeolithic and predates the arrival of modern humans int

The purpose of this work was to determine the epidemiological evolution of the Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) in adolescents, using a sample of Secondary School students of the region of Campo de Gibraltar (Cadiz). The students' age ranged from 12 to 16 years old. Two evaluations were completed, the first one during the school year 2001-2002 and the second one in the school year 2006-2007. The sample comprised 2310 students in the first study and 2351 students in the second one. We used a comparative-selective approach. The results of the comparison revealed a prevalence ranging from 3.77

Variation in 815bp of mitochondrial DNA from two gene fragments (300bp of cytochrome b and 395-515bp of 12S rRNA) for 26 Malpolon monspessulanus, and cytochrome b for a further 21 individuals, indicates that this species originated in the Maghreb area of Northwest Africa. Here, an estimated 3.5-6Mya, it divided into the western M. m. monspessulanus, and an eastern clade including M. m. insignitus and M. m. fuscus. The very limited genetic differentiation between Maghreb and Southwest European populations of this form suggests that it arrived in the Iberian Peninsula only recently. Population g

A study was conducted on the parasitization by anisakids of European anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus) from the Eastern Atlantic (Gulf of Cádiz and Strait of Gibraltar) and Western Mediterranean (Ligurian Sea, Gulf of Lion, Catalonia coast and NW Alborán Sea) throughout 1998 and 1999. The anisakids detected were identified as third larval stages of Anisakis larva type I and Hysterothylacium aduncum. Global prevalence was 9.4% for Anisakis and 24.5% for H. aduncum. Analysis of the origin of the anchovies revealed a higher prevalence of Anisakis than H. aduncum in fish from the Atlantic and vic

We combine formal linguistic approaches, where formal features are at stake, and psycholinguistic approaches to explore the processing mechanisms involved in language coactivation. In particular, we use linguistic codeswitching as a laboratory condition where the two languages of the bilingual are forced to be activated in order to explore how the properties of the two languages interact. We take English-Spanish switched determiner phrases (i.e., a switch between the determiner and the noun) to formally explore the directionality of the switch (la/el house vs. the casa) and the gender agreemen

Although whale-watching tourism makes it easier for humans to learn about these animals in the wild, interactions with boats can trigger temporary or even permanent behavioural changes in their populations. In this work we studied the potential effect of boats on the welfare of common dolphins, Delphinus delphis, a protected species in the Mediterranean, as well as a female bottlenose dolphin (Billie-Tursiops truncatus) that coexists with them in the bay of Algeciras-Gibraltar (BA-G), Southern Spain and that gave birth to the first known hybrid between both species in the wild. First, the reac

The Atlantic Ocean-Mediterranean Sea junction has been proposed as an important phylogeographical area on the basis of concordance in genetic patterns observed at allozyme, mtDNA and microsatellite DNA markers in several marine species. This study presents microsatellite DNA data for a mobile invertebrate species in this area, the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, allowing comparison of this relatively new class of DNA marker with previous allozyme results, and examination of the relative effects on gene flow of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Almería-Oran oceanographic front. Genetic variation at

The high mutation rates of RNA viruses, coupled with short generation times and large population sizes, allow viruses to evolve rapidly and adapt to the host environment. The rapidity of viral mutation also causes problems in developing successful vaccines and antiviral drugs. With the spread of SARS-CoV-2 worldwide, thousands of mutations have been identified, some of which have relatively high incidences, but their potential impacts on virus characteristics remain unknown. The present study analyzed mutation patterns, SARS-CoV-2 AASs retrieved from the GISAID database containing 10,500,000 s

The origin and maintenance of marine biodiversity remain poorly understood, particularly in highly connected oceanic environments where extensive dispersal is expected to limit population differentiation. Evolutionary processes driving population divergence or speciation frequently depend on a proper knowledge of species' life history and its interaction with major environmental variables. Using a genome-wide approach, we investigated the global population structure of the cosmopolitan pelagic fish Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758, generating a dataset of 8.7 million SNPs and complete mitoch

This paper aims to examine regional disparities in cigarette sales that occurred after the implementation of two laws regulating the sale and use of tobacco products in Spain. These laws became effective in December 2005 (Act 28/2005) and December 2010 (Act 42/2010). Furthermore, it provides a framework for studying spill-over effects pertaining to cross-border strategies that may alter how frontier regions react to the implementation of the laws. Provincial official data from January 2005 to December 2010 for legal cigarette sales has been divided into two distinct periods based on these regu

SETTING: Two towns in Campo de Gibraltar, southern Spain, with a small foreign population and higher tuberculosis (TB) incidence and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence than the national average.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between HIV-TB and non-HIV-TB incidence and social deprivation and other potential individual and contextual determinants.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional longitudinal study, individual TB case variables were identified from three sources--routine surveillance, laboratory and hospital discharge records--from 1997 to 2007. Community variables were obta

Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease transmittable to humans from infected animal reservoirs. Malta, Rock, Gibraltar, Cyprus or Mediterranean fever, Bang's disease, intermittent typhoid or typho-malarial fever, undulant fever, etc. are just various synonyms for brucellosis. Patients suffering from this disease show unspecific symptoms, e.g. fever, chills, malaise, arthralgia, headache, tiredness and weakness. Human brucellosis may be caused by four of totally six genetically and phenotypically closely related Brucella species, i.e. B. melitensis, B. abortus, B. suis and B. canis. Although

Anthropogenic noise is considered a marine pollutant by the European Union and can impact marine animals in various ways. Noise that overlaps in time and frequency with animal communication signals can interfere with communication and thus impact ecological functions mediated by acoustic signals, depending on how animals compensate for increasing noise. Our study investigated Lombard responses in long-finned pilot whales using sound and movement recording tags in an area with high anthropogenic pressure, the Strait of Gibraltar. We tested if pilot whales increase their vocal amplitude in respo

Cryptic diversity, characterized by morphologically similar but genetically distinct species, poses significant challenges to traditional taxonomic methods. Within monogeneans parasitizing northwest African barbels, this complexity hampers species identification, limiting our understanding of diversity, distribution and evolutionary relationships. Supported by previously published genetic data, we morphologically delineate herein 9 Gyrodactylus species from Morocco. Newly described species include G. agnesei sp. nov. and G. benhoussai sp. nov. from Luciobarbus rabatensis, with the latter also

Meiotically driving sex chromosomes manipulate gametogenesis to increase their transmission at a cost to the rest of the genome. The intragenomic conflicts they produce have major impacts on the ecology and evolution of their host species. However, their ecological dynamics remain poorly understood. Simple population genetic models predict meiotic drivers will rapidly reach fixation in populations and spread across landscapes. In contrast, natural populations commonly show spatial variation in the frequency of drivers, with drive present in clines or mosaics across species ranges. For example,

The ocean sunfish M. mola is frequently sighted in marine waters worldwide, including the Mediterranean Sea, yet information on its distribution and ecology in this region remains limited. This study synthesizes current global knowledge on M. mola and investigates its spatial occurrence in the Mediterranean Sea using long-term visual observations from the Fixed Line Transect Mediterranean Monitoring Network, complemented by environmental DNA (eDNA) samples collected through the Life Conceptu Maris project. A total of 2411 visual surveys conducted between 2009 and 2022 along fixed-line transect
