The intrinsic cardiac responses to 2-months Nigella sativa (black seed) oral supplementation (800 mg/kg) in rats were investigated. The isolated hearts were perfused in a Langendorff preparation to demonstrate the effects of N. sativa on the baseline inotropic and chronotropic functions and the myocardial flow rate. N. sativa supplementation induced moderate global (homogenous) cardiac hypertrophy, evident by significant increases in left ventricular and whole heart weights as well as the relative heart weight/body weight ratio. The isolated perfused hearts of Nigella-treated rats showed enhan

It has been reported that Nigella sativa oil possesses hepatoprotective effects in some models of liver toxicity. However, it is N. sativa seeds that are used in the treatment of liver ailments in folk medicine rather than its oil. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the aqueous suspension of N. sativa on carbon tetrachloride (CCL4)-induced liver damage. Aqueous suspension of the seeds was given orally at two dose levels (250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg) for five days. CCL4 (250 microl/kg intraperitoneally / day in olive oil) was given to the experimental group on days 4

Black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) seed oil was extracted with two different solvents, n-hexane (H) and a mixture of chloroform/methanol (CM) (2:1, by volume). Amount of total lipid (TL) was higher in the CM miscelle (39.2% of seed fresh weight) than in the H extract (37.9%). Chemical characteristics as well as fatty acid profile of the TL extracts were compared and the analysis revealed that the major fatty acid was linoleic acid C18:2n-6 (ca. 57% of total fatty acid methyl esters (FAME)) followed by oleic acid C18:1n-9. Palmitic acid C16:0 was the major saturated fatty acid and detected in appr
