Autism and social robotics: A systematic review.

Social robotics could be a promising method for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) treatment. The aim of this article is to carry out a systematic literature review of the studies on this topic that were published in the last 10 years. We tried to address the following questions: can social robots be a useful tool in autism therapy? We followed the PRISMA guidelines, and the protocol was registered within PROSPERO database (CRD42015016158). We found many positive implications in the use of social robots in therapy as for example: ASD subjects often performed better with a robot partner rather tha

Contribution of robotics to minimally invasive esophagectomy.

Robot-assisted surgery has the advantages of a three-dimensional view, versatility of instruments and better ergonomics. It allows fine dissection and difficult anastomoses in deep fields. Based on our experience, we try to define what are the main contributions of robotics to minimally invasive esophagectomy. From December 2009 to July 2012, we performed 24 minimally invasive esophagectomies (9 transhiatal, 5 Ivor-Lewis and 10 three-field), 16 of them robotically (8, 5 and 3, respectively). Eighteen patients (18/24 = 75 %) received neoadjuvant therapy. Nine patients (9/24 = 37.5 %) had sympto

Diffusion models in robotics: a comprehensive review.

Diffusion models are a powerful class of generative models that emerge in recent years to transform Gaussian noise into samples of the target distribution through an iterative denoising process. Due to the high training stability and powerful generative capabilities, diffusion models have surpassed previous generative models and demonstrate potential applications in the field of robotics. In the past few years, this area has gained increasing attention, and the number of studies applying diffusion models to the field of robotics has grown exponentially. This review aims to provide an overview

Robotics in Cerebrovascular Disease: The Final Frontier.

Cerebrovascular disease remains a leading cause of global mortality. While endovascular therapies like mechanical thrombectomy and aneurysm coiling have revolutionized management, manual techniques are limited by operator fatigue, tremor, and occupational radiation exposure. This review examines the current state of robotics in neuroendovascular surgery. FDA-approved systems demonstrate safety and technical feasibility, achieving high success rates (94-100%) in aneurysm coiling and carotid stenting while significantly reducing operator radiation exposure (60-80%). In ischemic stroke, preclinic

Opto-fluidically multiplexed assembly and micro-robotics.

Techniques for high-definition micromanipulations, such as optical tweezers, hold substantial interest across a wide range of disciplines. However, their applicability remains constrained by material properties and laser exposure. And while microfluidic manipulations have been suggested as an alternative, their inherent capabilities are limited and further hindered by practical challenges of implementation and control. Here we show that the iterative application of laser-induced, localized flow fields can be used for the relative positioning of multiple micro-particles, irrespectively of their

Robotics in Sinus and Skull Base Surgery.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has been proven to be safe and to yield acceptable oncological and functional outcomes for surgery of the oropharynx, hypopharynx, supraglottis, and glottis. TORS has been successful at reducing morbidity, improving quality of life, and providing access to areas that previously required mandibulotomy or other more radical approaches in the past. This has changed the paradigm of management of tumors in these anatomic locations. In this article, the authors review the recent literature discussing the role of robotic surgery in managing sinonasal and skull base pa

Robotics and imaging in congenital heart surgery.

The initial success seen in adult cardiac surgery with the application of available robotic systems has not been realized as broadly in pediatric cardiac surgery. The main obstacles include extended set-up time and complexity of the procedures, as well as the large size of the instruments with respect to the size of the child. Moreover, while the main advantage of robotic systems is the ability to minimize incision size, for intracardiac repairs, cardiopulmonary bypass is still required. Catheter-based interventions, on the other hand, have expanded rapidly in both application as well as the c

The future of robotics can be ours.

As the use of robotic aides increases the possibility of telesurgery, the perioperative scope of practice could include using patients' homes or other nontraditional settings as surgical sites. Even mobile surgical vans could be used. To perform telesurgery, the health care industry actively must define the role of the health care professional with the patient who can make an incision and insert a laparoscope. This may create an opportune time to promote the RN first assistant (RNFA) role--a goal that will involve expanding our state nurse practice acts to allow RNFAs to perform various functi

Providing physical relief for nurses by collaborative robotics.

Manual patient handling is one of the most significant challenges leading to musculoskeletal burden among healthcare workers. Traditional working techniques could be enhanced by innovations that can be individually adapted to the physical capacity of nurses. We evaluated the use of a robotic system providing physical relief by collaboratively assisting nurses in manual patient handling tasks. By quantifying kinetic and muscle activity data, it was possible to distinguish two kinds of movement patterns. Highly asymmetric postures and movements corresponded to distinct extremes in lower limb and
