Attenuation of response to mental stress in patients with essential tremor treated with metoprolol.

The response to mental stress in patients with benign essential tremor is an exaggeration of the resting tremor. We have studied the ability of metoprolol tartrate to attenuate specifically the tremorgenic response to mental stress in five patients with essential tremor who were each studied on four occasions. Treatment regimens consisted of 0-, 25-, 50-, and 75-mg doses of metoprolol tartrate, given twice daily for seven- to ten-day periods. Tremor was measured while patients were resting comfortably and then again following mental stress over eight-hour study periods. During the baseline stu

A follow-up study of Sydenham's chorea.

Twenty-five patients convalescing from Sydenham's chorea were contrasted by clinical examination, electroencephalograms, and psychometric and psychologic tests to 15 siblings and 20 matched rheumatic fever controls. A group of 10 postchoreic patients who had two or more signs could be identified. Patients in this group had all the signs classified as moderate or severe, performed less well than other choreic subjects on the Bender gestalt test, and had a higher percentage of abnormal electroencephalograms but not a higher incidence of behavioral disorders. This subgroup could not be predicted

Severe mental retardation, short stature, facial anomalies, joint laxity, and dislocations in two sisters: previously undescribed MCA/MR syndrome.

We describe two sisters with short stature, obesity, "bulbous" nasal tip, microretrognathism, brachydactyly, joint hyperlaxity and dislocation, and mental retardation. Skeletal surveys disclosed widened mandibular angles, thin temporal processes, hypoplastic clavicles, short distal ends of ulnae, short fourth metacarpals, and dislocation of hips, elbows, and thumbs. The parents are first cousins. To the best of our knowledge, this combination of multiple congenital anomalies and mental retardation has not been reported before.

Sexual trauma and the female brain.

Sexual aggression and violence against women (VAM) are not only social problems; they are mental health problems. Women who experience sexual trauma often express disruptions in emotional and cognitive processes, some of which lead to depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Animal models of neurogenesis and learning suggest that social yet aggressive interactions between a pubescent female and an adult male can disrupt processes of learning related to maternal care, which in turn reduce survival of new neurons in the female hippocampus. Mental and Physical (MAP) Training is a nov

"Children Are Not Children Anymore; They Are a Lost Generation": Adverse Physical and Mental Health Consequences on Syrian Refugee Children.

This research examines Syrian refugee mothers' accounts of the physical and mental health of their children being affected by war traumas and displacement challenges. Open-ended audio-recorded interviews were conducted in Arabic with 23 mothers residing in Jordan. Using a narrative approach in the data collection and analysis, five major themes were identified: (1) children were exposed to diverse war traumatic experiences in Syria; (2) the escape journey and refugee camps threatened children's lives; (3) displacement and family stressors exposed children to poverty, hostility from local peers

Enactive and simondonian reflections on mental disorders.

As an alternative to linear and unidimensional perspectives focused mainly on either organic or psychological processes, the enactive approach to life and mind-a branch of 4-E (embodied, embedded, enactive, extended) cognitive theories-offers an integrative framework to study mental disorders that encompasses and articulates organic, sensorimotor, and intersubjective dimensions of embodiment. These three domains are deeply entangled in a non-trivial manner. A question remains on how this systemic and multi-dimensional approach may be applied to our understanding of mental disorders and symptom

Suicide in People With Co-occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Conditions: An Integrative Literature Review to Inform Risk Formulation in Mental Health Nursing.

People with co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions experience disproportionately high levels of suicidal ideation, attempts and deaths compared with those with either condition alone, yet guidance for suicide risk formulation in this group is limited. This integrative literature review synthesised evidence on suicidality in adults with co-occurring conditions, identified risk and protective factors, and refined risk formulation approaches for mental health nursing. Using Whittemore and Knafl's methodology and Toronto and Remmington's stepwise guidance, CINAHL, Embase, Medline

Dual psychological processes underlying public stigma and the implications for reducing stigma.

People with serious illness or disability are often burdened with social stigma that promotes a cycle of poverty via unemployment, inadequate housing and threats to mental health. Stigma may be conceptualized in terms of self-stigma (e.g., shame and lowered self-esteem) or public stigma (e.g., the general public's prejudice towards the stigmatized). This article examines two psychological processes that underlie public stigma: associative processes and rule-based processes. Associative processes are quick and relatively automatic whereas rule-based processes take longer to manifest themselves

Which cognitive emotion-regulation strategies are implicated in the association between sleep quality and negative affect?

Poor sleep is causally related to the experience of mental health difficulties, and improving sleep can also improve mental health, positioning sleep as an important transdiagnostic treatment target in mental healthcare. However, considerably less is known about the psychological processes through which sleep may influence mental health. Identifying these processes could refine theoretical understanding and reveal specific targets for interventions. This large preregistered cross-sectional study examined cognitive emotion regulation as a candidate mechanism. A total of 899 adults completed mea

Discrimination Exposure, Neural Reactivity to Stress, and Psychological Distress.

OBJECTIVE: Discrimination exposure has a detrimental impact on mental health, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. The impact discrimination exposure has on mental health is likely mediated by neural processes associated with emotion expression and regulation. However, the specific neural processes that mediate the relationship between discrimination exposure and mental health remain to be determined. The present study investigated the relationship adolescent discrimination exposure has with stress-elicited brain activity and mental health symptoms in young adu

Organizational change: challenges for workplace psychosocial risks and employee mental health.

BACKGROUND: Constant organizational change is the norm in many companies today. At present, evidence on the impact of organizational change on psychosocial risks at work and employee mental health is limited. We investigate organizational change and its association with psychosocial risks and mental health in three consecutive surveys covering 12 years. METHODS: The study was based on data from three cross-sectional waves (2006, 2012, 2018) of the German BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey, comprising 53,295 employees. Four change indicators (i.e., introduction of new software, changes in goods and s

Dual-process theories beyond cognitive psychology: psychodynamic, clinical, and neurobiological perspectives.

Dual-process theories (DPT) have become an influential framework for understanding human cognition by distinguishing between two modes of mental processing, often described through distinctions such as automatic vs. controlled, intuitive vs. analytic, or unconscious vs. conscious. Although initially developed within cognitive psychology, this review considers DPT in relation to psychodynamic, clinical, and neurobiological perspectives to explore their complementary contributions to understanding human mental functioning. From a psychodynamic perspective, particular attention is given to primar

Preliminary Investigation of the Impact of Stress Suppression Processes and Counseling Strategies for Police Officers: A Qualitative Content Analysis.

(1) Background: With the increasing complexity of public safety duties, police officers are frequently exposed to high-pressure, high-risk environments. They face multiple stressors, including workload demands, societal expectations, supervisory pressure, and emergencies. Such factors can impair their mental health and emotional suppression capacity. (2) Methods: This preliminary qualitative investigation examines police officers' perceptions of stress-related suppression processes through a literature review and semi-structured in-depth interviews with a small number of officers, employing qu

Functional immunogenomics and deep clinical phenotyping to resolve the challenges of heterogeneity in mental disorders.

Historically, the field of psychiatry has relied on descriptive categories, as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD). However, with increasing knowledge of molecular processes that contribute to mental disorders, the descriptive approach has been criticised. The current descriptive diagnostic categories lack sensitivity and specificity; as such, diagnostic heterogeneity remains a challenge for clinics and research. The search for more homogeneous patient groups is fuelled by both the molecular background, l

An Expert Map of Gambling Risk Perception.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the moderating or mediating role played by risk perception in decision-making, gambling behaviour, and disordered gambling aetiology. Eleven gambling expert clinicians and researchers completed a semi-structured interview derived from mental models and grounded theory methodologies. Expert interview data was used to construct a comprehensive expert mental model 'map' detailing risk-perception related factors contributing to harmful or safe gambling. Systematic overlapping processes of data gathering and analysis were used to iteratively exten
