Adsorptive removal of anionic azo dye by Al3+-modified magnetic biochar obtained from low pyrolysis temperatures of chitosan.

Magnetic γ-Fe2O3/Al3+@chitosan-derived biochar (m-Fe2O3/Al3+@CB) was prepared by introducing magnetic maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles and aluminum sulfate [Al2(SO4)3] into chitosan-derived biochar (CB) obtained at low pyrolysis temperatures. m-Fe2O3/Al3+@CB was used to remove typical anionic azo dye (Congo red, CR). Effects of initial CR concentration, contact time, initial pH value, background electrolytes, and temperature on CR adsorption by m-Fe2O3/Al3+@CB were studied. Compared with magnetic chitosan-derived biochar (m-Fe2O3@CB), m-Fe2O3/Al3+@CB exhibited excellent performance for a wide

Pyrolysis temperature dependent effects of biochar on shifting fluorescence spectrum characteristics of soil dissolved organic matter under warming.

Biochar generally shift the content and molecular composition of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) which represent the reactive components and have essential roles in coupling elemental cycling in soil. However, it is not clear how the effects of biochar on soil DOM composition is shifted under warming. This causes a knowledge gap to fully understand the fate of SOM affected by biochar application in a warming climate. To fill this gap, we conducted a simulated climate warming incubation of soil to study the influence of biochar with different pyrolysis temperatures and feedstock types on so

Novel study on catalytic pyrolysis of chitin biomass using waste cathode material recovered from spent Li-ion battery.

Waste cathode (BC) from spent lithium-ion battery (LIB) was preliminarily studied for the catalytic pyrolysis of chitin biomass using thermogravimetric and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. Compared with the dry-mixing method (BC1), the wet-impregnation method (BC2) significantly increased the decomposition rate of chitin pyrolysis and decreased the apparent activation energy from 85 kJ/mol to 76 kJ/mol. BC2 had a superior catalytic effect on the conversion of heavy components into light fractions. In particular, the selectivities for acetamides and acetonitrile were imp

Characterization of copper binding to biochar-derived dissolved organic matter: Effects of pyrolysis temperature and natural wetland plants.

Characterization of the biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM) is essential to understanding the environmental efficacy of biochar and the behavior of heavy metals. In this study, the binding properties of BDOM derived from different pyrolysis temperatures, wetland plants, and plant organs with Cu was investigated based on a multi-analytical approach. In general, the pyrolysis temperature exhibited a more significant impact on both the spectral characteristics of BDOM and Cu binding behavior than those of the feedstocks. With the pyrolysis temperature increased, the dissolved organic

Heating temperature dependence of molecular characteristics and biological response for biomass pyrolysis volatile-derived water-dissolved organic matter.

The utilization of biomass pyrolysis volatile-derived water-dissolved organic matter (WOM, often called wood vinegar) determines sustainable recycling of biomass. Further, pyrolysis temperature significantly controls the cracking of biomass components, resulting in various molecular compositions and biological responses of WOM. Although it has been widely used in the agriculture, the relationship between molecular compositions and biological responses affected by heating temperature is still unclear. Here, it was observed that the WOM concentration increased with increasing temperatures and th

Bio-oil upgrading with catalytic pyrolysis of biomass using Copper/zeolite-Nickel/zeolite and Copper-Nickel/zeolite catalysts.

The bio-oil obtained from a general pyrolysis process contains a higher concentration of oxygenated compounds and the resultant physical and chemical properties make it an unsuitable drop-in fuel. The oxygenated compounds in the bio-oil can be converted into hydrocarbons or less oxygenated compounds with the application of catalysts. This study demonstrated the bio-oil upgrading with the application of catalysts, comparing the catalytic effect of combined mono-metallic catalysts (Cu/zeolite and Ni/zeolite) and sole bi-metallic catalyst (CuNi/zeolite) on the composition of bio-oil and pyrolytic

Revealing the impact of pyrolysis temperature on dissolved organic matter released from the biochar prepared from Typha orientalis.

Biochars derived from wetland biomass have been extensively applied in water and wastewater treatments. This study investigated the quantity and chemical quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from the biochar prepared from the typical wetland plant (Typha orientalis) at different pyrolysis temperatures (300-700 °C) by using fluorescence excitation-emission (EEM) spectrophotometry with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The results showed that the content of DOM released from biochars at low pyrolysis temperatures (300-500 °C) was higher than that obser

Pyrolysis of tert-butyl tert-butanethiosulfinate, t-BuS(O)St-Bu: a computational perspective of the decomposition pathways.

A systematic theoretical study has been performed on the low pressure thermal decomposition pathways of t-BuS(O)St-Bu using the CCSD(T)/cc-pV(D+d)Z//B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p), CCSD(T)/cc-pV(D+d)Z//PBEPBE/6-311++G(2d,2p), and G3B3 level of theories. Rate constants for the unimolecular decomposition pathways are calculated using Rice−Ramsperger−Kassel−Marcus (RRKM) theory. On the basis of the experimental observation and theoretical predictions, the pyrolysis channels are considered as primary and secondary pyrolysis reactions. The primary decomposition via a five-membered transition state leads to

Role of catalyst type in the selective production of naphtha and diesel hydrocarbons via cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pyrolysis.

This research investigated the role of catalyst nature in selective pyrolysis of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) into highly valuable hydrocarbons (HCs) of naphtha and diesel to address circular economy targets. Catalytic pyrolysis process can be practically engineered for direct conversion of PEX into naphtha and diesel HCs by selecting upgrading catalysts with suitable properties. Selection of suitable catalyst types is critical as it significantly affects the distribution and quality of pyrolysis products and can help to reduce the environmental impact of the process on an industrial scale.

Unraveling the thermal release dynamics and pyrolysis signatures of agarwood by gas-liquid microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Agarwood, a precious resinous material derived from Aquilaria trees, is highly valued for its unique fragrance that mainly originates from sesquiterpenes and 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromones. However, the dynamic release behavior of these compounds during combustion remains poorly understood. Common analytical methods, such as headspace and solid-phase microextraction, are limited by their temperature range and fail to mimic true combustion conditions. An innovative pre-treatment technique, gas liquid microextraction (GLME), was employed, requiring as little as 10 mg of sample to effecti

Pyrolysis of Two Perfluoroalkanesulfonates (PFSAs) and PFSA-Laden Granular Activated Carbon (GAC): Decomposition Mechanisms and the Role of GAC.

Thermal treatment of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) presents a promising opportunity to halt the PFAS cycle. However, how co-occurring materials such as granular activated carbon (GAC) influence thermal decomposition products of PFASs, and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We studied the pyrolysis of two potassium salts of perfluoroalkanesulfonates (PFSAs, CnF2n+1SO3K), perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS-K), and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS-K), with or without GAC. PFBS-K is more stable than PFOS-K for pure standards, but when it is adsorbed onto GAC, its thermal stabi

Synergistic atmospheric influence on the co-pyrolysis of antibiotic sludge and waste bicycle tires: Optimal drivers, products, and pathways.

Effective management of antibiotic sludge (AS) is essential for disease prevention. This study investigated the co-pyrolysis of AS with polyurethane (PU) and rubber tires (RT), focusing on its key drivers, synergies, resulting products, and atmospheric (N2 versus CO2) dependency. Composite pyrolysis index indicated superior co-pyrolysis properties of AS with PU or RT in the CO2 atmosphere compared with those in the N2 atmosphere. The strongest synergistic effect occurred at an optimal ratio of 75 % AS to 25 % PU (AP31) or 25 % RT (AR31), regardless of the atmosphere. Real-time gas analysis rev

Pyrolysis of End-Of-Life Tires: Moving from a Pilot Prototype to a Semi-Industrial Plant Using Auger Technology.

This work, carried out within the framework of the BlackCycle project, demonstrates the robustness of an auger reactor for the pyrolysis of end-of-life tires (ELTs) to be considered within the seventh level of technology readiness (TRL-7). For this purpose, the resulting pyrolysis products are compared with those obtained from a pilot scale facility ranging within the fifth technology readiness level (TRL-5). Using the same type of ELTs, tire trucks (TTs), operating conditions used at the TRL-5 plant are attempted to mimic those expected at a semi-industrial plant: tailored temperature profile

Kinetics study and Py-GC-MS analysis of pyrolysis in chicken bone waste for sustainable utilisation in thermal conversion.

Chicken bone waste is generated by the food service industry and individual households. The main issues in bone waste management are related to illegal discharge or high disposal costs. However, their valorisation raises great prospects towards the achievement of environmental sustainability and circular bioeconomy. In this study, chicken bone waste feedstocks were sourced from the fried chicken process (CBF) and purchased from one of the world's largest fast-food restaurant chains as well as from household waste (CBO). The feedstocks were enzymatically pretreated, in preparation to be subject

Catalytic effect and mechanism of in-situ metals on pyrolysis of FR4 printed circuit boards: Insights from kinetics and products.

Pyrolysis is a promising method for the recovery of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), but few researches have noticed the influence of in-situ metals. This study conducted a series of comparisons between metal-free leftover pieces (LP) and intact boards (IB), including pyrolysis characteristics, volatile emission, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters. The thermo-gravimetry (TG) analyses indicated that both the samples presented predominant mass loss in narrow temperature intervals, and characteristic pyrolysis temperatures of IB were approximately 15 °C lower than those of LP. Dominant c

Assessing the potential of sewage sludge-derived biochar as a novel phosphorus fertilizer: Influence of extractant solutions and pyrolysis temperatures.

Sewage sludge-derived biochar (SSB) is a phosphorus (P) source with potential to replace soluble P fertilizers. However, SSB presents a diversity of P compounds, mainly in mineral forms with different degrees of chemical stability. This hinders the prediction of P bioavailability. In the present study we evaluated P solubility and bioavailability using different chemical extractants. Additionally, the relationships between extractable P and physicochemical properties were evaluated for SSB obtained over a wide range of temperatures (200 °C; 300 °C; 500 °C and 600 °C). Available phosphorus cont
