Predictors of multiple tooth loss among socioculturally diverse elderly subjects.

PURPOSE: This study identifies clinical factors that predict multiple tooth loss in a socioculturally diverse population of older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 193 participants from English-, Chinese-, or Punjabi-speaking communities in Vancouver, British Columbia, with low incomes and irregular use of dental services were followed for 5 years as part of a clinical trial of a 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthrinse. The participants were interviewed and examined clinically, including panoramic radiographs, at baseline and annually for 5 years. Binary logistic regression was used to test th

Clinical considerations for enhancing the success of implant-supported restorations in the aesthetic zone with delayed implant placement.

Several factors (e.g., root configuration, periapical pathoses, periodontal disease, severe bone loss, patient accessibility) determine the timing of the implant placement. When delayed implant placement is the only feasible option for implant restoration, achieving a functional and aesthetic restoration is more complex and challenging. This article will discuss the surgical and prosthetic methods for enhancing the success of an implant-supported crown in the aesthetic zone in cases where delayed implant placement is the only available treatment option for patients missing single teeth.

Open-flap versus flapless esthetic crown lengthening: 12-month clinical outcomes of a randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Excessive gingival display (EGD) has a negative impact on a pleasant smile. Minimally invasive therapeutic modalities have become the standard treatment in many dentistry fields. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the clinical outcomes of open-flap (OF) and minimally invasive flapless (FL) esthetic crown lengthening (ECL) for the treatment of EGD. METHODS: A split-mouth randomized controlled trial was conducted in 28 patients presenting with EGD. Contralateral quadrants received ECL using OF or FL techniques. Clinical parameters were evaluated at baseline and 3, 6, and

Mineral trioxide aggregate vs. formocresol in pulpotomized primary molars: a preliminary report.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) to that of formocresol (FC) as pulp dressing agents in pulpotomized primary molars with carious pulp exposure. METHODS: Forty-five primary molars of 26 children were treated by a conventional pulpotomy technique. The teeth were randomly assigned to the MTA (experimental) or FC (control) group by a toss of a coin. Following removal of the coronal pulp and hemostasis the pulp stumps were covered with an MTA paste in the experimental group. In the control group, FC was placed with a cotton pellet over th

Single molar replacement with a progressive thread design implant system: a retrospective clinical report.

Many clinical studies have shown that replacement of molars with only 1 implant is commonly associated with various functional complications, such as implant fracture and screw loosening. Thus, multiple implants have been recommended to withstand the high occlusal forces present in the molar region. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical response to the use of single implants with a progressive thread design (Ankylos) in the replacement of molar teeth. Fifty-eight implants (10 in the maxilla and 48 in the mandible) were placed in 51 patients. The implants were in situ

Efficiency of Three Interdental Plaque Control Aids (Dental Floss, Water Flosser, and Interdental Brush) as an Adjunct to Toothbrushing in Children.

INTRODUCTION: General well-being of an individual, particularly oral health, depends on the maintenance of optimal oral hygiene. Evidence-based research has established the role of plaque biofilm as an etiologic factor that increases the risk of developing oral diseases such as dental caries and gingival and periodontal diseases. Brushing with either manual or mechanical toothbrushes is most commonly practiced for the removal of plaque, but its efficiency is limited to surfaces it can access, i.e., facial, lingual, and occlusal surfaces of the teeth. During the mixed dentition period, there is

Assessment of evidence from teeth and the alveolar bone of skulls.

A notable lack of agreement on a standardised criterion for representing changes in alveolar bone persists, which limits its application in forensic dentistry. This study aimed to describe the data on loss of tooth substance and alveolar bone in skulls. Dental and trabecular bone information from 28 skulls from the German Helmer skull collection was collected through dental charting, intraoral photographs taken with a DSLR camera (Nikon D5600, Nikon Corporation, Japan), and small radiographs obtained using a handheld dental X-ray device (Nomad Pro 2, Kavo Kerr, Biberach, Germany).
