AIM: The purpose of this prospective split-mouth, randomised clinical trial was to assess the clinical and radiographic success rate of pulpotomy in primary molars using calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement or placement of zinc oxide eugenol after electrosurgery (ES/ZOE).
METHODS: Pulpotomy was performed for 102 primary second molars in 51 children aged between 4 and 6 years. Considering a split-mouth design, for each patient the right and left second primary molars randomly underwent pulpotomy using CEM cement or ES/ZOE. All teeth were restored using preformed metal crowns. Following pulpot

Ninety-three per cent of all 12-year old patients at a clinic in western Sweden accepted an invitation to take part in a dental examination in order to evaluate early orthodontic treatment. Treatment in the primary or mixed dentition periods should aim at creating normal craniofacial, occlusal and dental development and, if possible, at reducing the need for later, more complicated treatment. The treatment success was low regarding overjet correction but fairly good with regard to diagnosis and treatment of crossbite/forced occlusion, ectopic eruption and congenitally missing teeth. Whether co

This study investigated the pulp response to a 15.5 percent ferric sulfate solution (FS) and a 20 percent dilution of formocresol (DFC) in pulpotomized primary teeth of baboons, after four and eight weeks. Pulpotomies were performed in seventy-nine primary teeth of 4 baboons. After coronal pulp resection, the pulp stumps were painted with ferric sulfate for fifteen seconds, in thirty-two teeth (group 1); in another thirty-two teeth, a cotton pellet moistened with dilution of formocresol was placed over the pulp stumps for five minutes, and removed (group 2). In fifteen teeth, IRM was placed di

Three hundred and ninety boys aged 2, 4 or 6 years from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, took part in a survey in 1993/94. The main aims of the study were first, to identify factors related to malnutrition in young children since a study of older children from the same area 1 year before had shown malnutrition to be strongly related to prevalence of developmental defects of enamel (DDE) of permanent teeth and, second, to identify factors related to the prevalence of developmental defects of primary teeth. Enamel defects were recorded by clinical examination of the buccal surfaces of all primary teeth by

To exclusively evaluate, in vitro, the efficacy of five intracanal medicaments against Candida albicans and Enterococcus faecalis in infected single-rooted primary teeth. Forty-three teeth were selected, out of which 42 were simultaneously contaminated with C. albicans and E. faecalis, verified by measuring the initial quantification (IQ), whereas one tooth was used as sterile control. Forty-two teeth were then randomly assigned to six groups (n = 7 teeth in each); one was the control group, while the others received calcium hydroxide (CH), camphorated paramonochlorophenol (CMCP), CH/CMCP, chl

BACKGROUND: Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) solution is effective in arresting early childhood caries (ECC). Previous studies have suggested that it might exert a preventive effect in managing ECC. However, no well-designed clinical trials have yet been performed to study the effect of SDF on caries prevention. The objective of this randomised clinical trial is to determine whether 38% SDF solution is superior to 5% sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish in preventing new carious lesions in primary anterior teeth.
