Salivary and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) protein biomarkers as proxies of root resorption following orthodontic tooth movement. A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontically induced root resorption (OIRR) is a common complication of orthodontic treatment, characterized by inflammatory and remodeling processes. This systematic review (SR) aimed to evaluate the potential of salivary and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) biomarkers as proxies for the early detection of an ongoing root resorption process during orthodontic tooth movement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Electronic searches were performed in multiple databases of published and grey literature, up to May 2023. Eligible studies included participants undergoing orthodontic treatment with

Association of crown-root ratio and tooth survival in Chinese patients with advanced periodontitis: An 11-year retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease which eventually lead to tooth loss (TL). Therefore, a retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the status of tooth survival within 11 years after non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) and to analyze the risk factors especially crown-root ratio (CRR) that affected TL in Chinese with advanced periodontitis. METHODS: 3481 teeth of 131 subjects who underwent NSPT were examined retrospectively within a mean follow-up period of 11.6 years. The association of risk factors including clinical and radiographic parame

Clinical Investigation of the Inhibitory Effects of Tooth-Coating Materials on Initial Active Root Caries: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background and Objectives: Caredyne ZIF-C is a novel, capsule-mixed zinc-containing prototype glass ionomer cement (GIC). Zinc ions are reported to inhibit root dentin demineralization, dentin collagen degradation, bacterial growth, acid production, and in vitro bacterial biofilm formation. However, the effectiveness of GICs against initial root caries lesions is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of GICs, especially the new zinc-containing Caredyne ZIF-C GIC, as tooth-coating materials in patients with initial active root caries. Materials and Methods: A total of 58

Evaluation of sagittal root position and labial alveolar bone concavity in the maxillary anterior tooth area for immediate implant placement.

BACKGROUND: The anatomical characteristics of the maxillary labial alveolar bone play a crucial role in the treatment planning of immediate implant placement. The sagittal root position (SRP) and alveolar bone concavity are closely related to anatomical characteristics in determining the ideal implant position. This study evaluated the SRP and labial alveolar bone concavity in the maxillary anterior teeth area. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography images of 120 samples involving 720 teeth were uploaded to the medical imaging software. The SRP was classified as Class I, II, III, or IV, and t

Effects of Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound on Orthodontic Tooth Movement and Orthodontically Induced Inflammatory Root Resorption in Ovariectomized Osteoporotic Rats.

This study investigated the effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIRR) in ovariectomized osteoporotic rats. Forty-eight 28-d-old female Wistar rats were divided into ovariectomized and intact groups. In both groups, animals were left untreated; treated with 50 g mesially directed orthodontic force on the maxillary first molars using nickel-titanium closed-coil springs for 28 d; or treated with the same orthodontic protocol along with a 20-min LIPUS application on alternate days for 28 d.

Insulin-like growth factor system components in the periodontium during tooth root resorption and early repair processes in the rat.

There is evidence that growth factors, such as the insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), are involved in biological and pathological processes in oro-dento-facial tissues. To investigate their roles in tooth movement, root resorption, and repair, the occurrence of components of the IGF system, including the ligands IGF-I and -II, the IGF receptor 1 (IGF1R) and six IGF-binding proteins (IGFBP-1 to -6), was investigated by immunohistochemistry on sections from rat maxillae where the first molar had been moved mesially by means of an orthodontic appliance for 9 d to induce root resorption. After fo

Evaluation of Antimicrobial Efficacy and Cytotoxicity of Phytoextract from Leucas aspera as a Root Canal Irrigant in Primary Tooth: In Vitro Study.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Root canal irrigation is a critical step in pediatric endodontics, where an ideal irrigant should exhibit potent antimicrobial properties while maintaining biocompatibility. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is widely used for its strong antimicrobial efficacy, but its cytotoxic effects raise concerns, especially in pediatric patients. Leucas aspera (L. aspera), a medicinal plant known for its antimicrobial properties, is explored as a potential alternative to 1% NaOCl. This study aims to evaluate and compare the antimicrobial efficacy and cytotoxicity of L. aspera extract and 1%

High microbicidal effect of peroxynitric acid on biofilm-infected dentin in a root carious tooth model and verification of tissue safety.

OBJECTIVES: Root-caries, which frequently occurs in elderly people, is more difficult to treat than caries in a tooth crown, especially in filling restorations. To overcome this difficulty, it is essential to find a strategy for sufficiently sterilizing the infected dentin; however, techniques for sterilizing carious pathogens inside the biofilm, called dental plaque, have not yet been established. Recently, dental applications of plasma sterilization technology have attracted attention. The mechanism of plasma sterilization became clear, and revealed that peroxynitric acid (PNA) is an effecti

Minimal intervention treatment of crown-root fracture in a mature permanent tooth by MTA pulpotomy and Fragment Reattachment: A Case Report.

Treatment of crown-root fracture can be complicated, time-consuming and expensive. This paper presents a treatment approach that minimises intra-operatory intervention and preserves the biologic tissue. A 15-year-old boy reported for treatment of an oblique crown fracture in the left permanent maxillary central incisor (#21, Fédération Dentaire Internationale) with mature root apices. The treatment presented an endodontic, periodontal and restorative challenge as the crown fracture exposed the pulp and extended subgingivally. The patient also had accompanying generalised enamel hypoplasia due

Influence of anti-allergic drugs used systemically on the process of root resorption during delayed tooth replantation: A study in rats.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Anti-allergic drugs can inhibit the hard tissue resorption process, and due to similarities between root resorption and bone mechanisms, it can be inferred that these drugs may also control root resorption. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of anti-allergic drugs used systemically on the process of root resorption following delayed tooth replantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two maxillary right incisors of rats were extracted and subsequently replanted. Rats were divided into four groups according to the anti-allergic drug administered: the rats in groups

Increasing the amount of corticotomy does not affect orthodontic tooth movement or root resorption, but accelerates alveolar bone resorption in rats.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships among the volume of bone cut during corticotomy, amount of tooth movement, volume of root resorption, and volume of the resultant alveolar bone resorption after tooth movement. METHODS: Ten-week-old female Wistar rats were distributed into the corticotomy groups and a control group that underwent sham corticotomy. Two experiments employing two different orthodontic forces (10 or 25g) and experimental periods (14 or 21 days) were performed. The volumes of the bone cut by corticotomy were 0.1, 1.0, and 1.7mm3 in the 25g gro

Effect of local injection of Zolena, zoledronic acid made in Iran, on orthodontic tooth movement and root and bone resorption in rats.

Background. Anchorage control is an essential part of orthodontic treatment planning, especially in adult patients who demand a more convenient treatment. Zoledronic acid (ZA) is an effective choice to address this problem. It is the most potent member of the bisphosphonates family that has an inhibitory effect on bone resorption by suppressing osteoclast function. Therefore, ZA might be a good option for orthodontic anchorage control. The current study evaluated the effect of local administration of Zolena (ZA made in Iran) on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and root and bone resorption. Met

Absence of apical resorption during orthodontic treatment on a tooth with a complicated crown fracture and root canal treatment: a case report.

Root resorption often occurs after tooth trauma and may also occur during orthodontic tooth movement. This has been attributed to bacteria and inflammation or a combination of both aetiologies. The literature suggests that root canal treatment performed on a traumatized tooth that will concurrently or subsequently undergo orthodontic tooth movement may forestall the resorptive process. This case report provides evidence for this prevention and discusses the hypothesis for the absence of resorption on root-treated teeth.
