Tablet Technology for Writing and Drawing during Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Review.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a powerful modality to study brain activity. To approximate naturalistic writing and drawing behaviours inside the scanner, many fMRI-compatible tablet technologies have been developed. The digitizing feature of the tablets also allows examination of behavioural kinematics with greater detail than using paper. With enhanced ecological validity, tablet devices have advanced the fields of neuropsychological tests, neurosurgery, and neurolinguistics. Specifically, tablet devices have been used to adopt many traditional paper-based writing and drawin

Motor Cortex Activation During Writing in Focal Upper-Limb Dystonia: An fNIRS Study.

BACKGROUND: Functional imaging studies have associated dystonia with abnormal activation in motor and sensory brain regions. Commonly used techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging impose physical constraints, limiting the experimental paradigms. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers a new noninvasive possibility for investigating cortical areas and the neural correlates of complex motor behaviors in unconstrained settings. METHODS: We compared the cortical brain activation of patients with focal upper-limb dystonia and controls during the writing task under natu

Being on Target: Visual Information during Writing Affects Effective Connectivity in Parkinson's Disease.

A common motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) is micrographia, characterized by a decrease in writing amplitude. Despite the relevance of this impairment for activities of daily living, the underlying neural network abnormalities and the impact of cueing strategies on brain connectivity are unknown. Therefore, we investigated the effects of visual cues on visuomotor network interactions during handwriting in PD and healthy controls (HCs). Twenty-eight patients with early disease, ON dopaminergic medication, and 14 age-matched controls performed a pre-writing task with and without visual c

Direct writing of large-area plasmonic photonic crystals using single-shot interference ablation.

We report direct writing of metallic photonic crystals (MPCs) through a single-shot exposure of a thin film of colloidal gold nanoparticles to the interference pattern of a single UV laser pulse before a subsequent annealing process. This is defined as interference ablation, where the colloidal gold nanoparticles illuminated by the bright interference fringes are removed instantly within a timescale of about 6 ns, which is actually the pulse length of the UV laser, whereas the gold nanoparticles located within the dark interference fringes remain on the substrate and form grating structures. Tracing Dialogical Repositioning in Multi-Perspective Expressive Writing: A Longitudinal Qualitative Case Study.

Research on expressive writing has often focused on psychological outcomes, with less attention to how processes of self-reorganization unfold over time. Drawing on dialogical self theory, this study traces dialogical repositioning within a structured multi-perspective writing practice. Using a longitudinal qualitative single-case design, we followed a university student experiencing psychological distress across a six-week writing practice comprising 12 sessions organized around four recurring orientations: emotional disclosure, cognitive reappraisal, gratitude, and future-oriented writing. Pharmacy student-facilitated prescription writing workshop: Evaluating interprofessional peer performance, communication, and collaboration.

INTRODUCTION: A peer-led prescription writing workshop was delivered by pairs of fourth-year pharmacy student facilitators (PSFs) to second-year medical (MD) and first-year physician assistant (PA) students. This study assessed PSFs' teaching performance and evaluated participants' perceptions of the workshop's educational value. METHODS: A mixed-methods cross-sectional design was used. MD and PA students evaluated the PSFs and the workshop via a Likert scale survey that was developed from validated instruments. PSFs also completed self-assessments and evaluated their co-facilitator's perform

An arts-based compassion training guided by social neuroscience and creative writing theory.

PROBLEM: Within health science education, arts and humanities interventions are used to teach compassion, yet the connection between methodologies and outcomes is often tenuous. While evidence-based methods for cultivating compassion exist, they are rarely described as guiding frameworks for arts-based or humanities interventions. Additionally, arts practitioners and humanities educators familiar with the theory, pedagogy, and practices of their disciplines are often absent from interventions that could benefit from their expertise. Educational models that are grounded in the available evidenc

Writing when writhing with psychosis: a computational linguistic autopsy of Vaslav Nijinsky's diary.

'God of Dance' Vaslav Nijinsky wrote profusely during a short period in 1918-1919, immediately preceding his diagnosis of schizophrenia and long-term confinement. This diary, in its uncensored form, constitutes one of the most extensively documented ex tempore first-person accounts during psychosis. It offers a chance to explore the impact of psychosis on writing-not just on what one writes, but also how one writes under such torment. The text generates a pervasive impression of repetitive, meandering thought-invoking suspicions of being a product of formal thought disorder-an affliction that

Fabrication of Copper Nanowires Highly Conductive and Flexible Circuits by Direct Ink Writing.

Direct ink writing (DIW) has emerged as a promising method for fabricating flexible electronics. Copper nanowires are a key material for the conductive inks required for this technology. However, copper nanowires suffer from significant challenges, including low aspect ratios, poor oxidation resistance, and difficulty in printing. In this study, a liquid-phase reduction method was used to synthesize copper nanowires with a high aspect ratio (up to 2884) and excellent oxidation resistance. The conductive ink was prepared using ethylene glycol, isopropanolamine (MIPA), and ethanol as solvents. R

Expressive Writing and Self-Care in Palliative Care Professionals: A Qualitative Longitudinal Study.

Palliative care professionals are exposed to emotionally intense situations. Stress, anxiety, and burnout can impact the dimension of care through the loss of motivation. Expressive writing in the general population effectively promotes emotion regulation through meaning-making. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Expressive writing on the meaning change in the perception of traumatic professional events in multi-professional palliative care settings in Italy. We conducted a prospective study with longitudinal qualitative methodology, following an ad-hoc expressive writing protocol. The

Using aggregated AI detector outcomes to eliminate false positives in STEM-student writing.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) large language models have become sufficiently accessible and user-friendly to assist students with course work, studying tactics, and written communication. AI-generated writing is almost indistinguishable from human-derived work. Instructors must rely on intuition/experience and, recently, assistance from online AI detectors to help them distinguish between student- and AI-written material. Here, we tested the veracity of AI detectors for writing samples from a fact-heavy, lower-division undergraduate anatomy and physiology course. Student participants

Motor network reorganization associated with rTMS-induced writing improvement in writer's cramp dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp (WC) dystonia is an involuntary movement disorder with distributed abnormalities in the brain's motor network. Prior studies established the potential for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to either premotor cortex (PMC) or primary somatosensory cortex (PSC) to modify symptoms. However, clinical effects have been modest with limited understanding of the neural mechanisms hindering therapeutic advancement of this promising approach. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the motor network effects of rTMS in WC that correspond with behavioral effi

Effects of Expressive Writing on "Choking under Pressure" in High Test-Anxious Individuals.

(1) Background: High test-anxious students often fail to perform at their actual level and are prone to choking under pressure (CUP). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether expressive writing (EW) can help high test-anxious individuals reduce the degree of the CUP effect, and whether the intervention effects were different in people with different working memory capacities. (2) Methods: High test-anxious participants wrote expressively (EW group) or neutrally (control group) according to guidance, and then completed a modular arithmetic (MA) task under a high-stress condition.

Group-led creative writing and behavioural health in cancer: a randomised clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cancer diagnosis can adversely affect mental well-being and overall clinical outcome. We evaluated the efficacy of a group-led creative writing workshop (CWW) on mood in patients with cancer prospectively. METHODS: We conducted a single-institution phase II study. Sixty adult patients with cancer (any type or stage) were randomised 2:1 to CWW (4×CWW sessions, bimonthly over 8 weeks) versus active control (AC) (independent writing at home with the help of a book, four sessions, bimonthly over 8 weeks). The total study duration was 6 months with a follow-up of up to 3 months. PRIMA

Proactive interference apraxic agraphia: a writing and drawing disorder associated with corticobasal syndrome.

Proactive interference is when a previously performed task impairs performance on a current task. It is often associated with memory tasks and has not been reported to interfere with writing or drawing. We evaluated a left-handed man diagnosed with corticobasal syndrome who had a two-year history of progressive agraphia. On the sentence writing and clock drawing tasks, he initially wrote letters and numbers correctly but revealed an increase of movement errors as the tasks progressed. We propose the term "proactive interference apraxic agraphia" for this novel disorder. Prefrontal dysfunction

Does writing handedness affect neural representation of symbolic number? An fMRI adaptation study.

A key question in the field of numerical cognition is how the human brain represents numerical symbols (e.g., Arabic digits). A large body of research has implicated left parietal regions in symbolic number processing. One possible explanation for this lateralization of neural activity is the handedness of participants. Specifically, participants in neuroimaging research are almost exclusively right-handed. The current study sought to probe whether number representation in the brain is associated with hand preference for handwriting. To address this question, we used functional Magnetic Resona

Writing about life goals: effects on rumination, mood and the cortisol awakening response.

Rumination is a vulnerability factor for the onset and maintenance of emotional distress. This study examined whether writing about life goals is associated with a decrease in ruminative thinking and a reduced cortisol awakening response. 68 healthy participants either wrote about their personal life goals or a control topic. Writing about life goals was associated with a modest decrease in ruminative thinking and a reduced cortisol awakening response at the post-intervention assessment. Results provide initial evidence that writing about life goals can be a helpful aid in decreasing ruminatio

Why is the New York Times writing so much about Alzheimer's disease therapies?

Can we go back to proving that drugs work in preventing, postponing, and ameliorating familial Alzheimer's disease (ad)? Ad is so devastating that there is a great public interest in the drug discovery process as evinced by the sheer number of articles in the serious popular press. The presently available, yet poorly performing, drugs have been approved despite their multiple peripheral side effects. The research on disease-modifying agents for the treatment of ad is largely focused on reducing amyloid plaques. However, it is now clear that companies and researchers alike are losing hope in fi

Assessing the influence of registered dietitian order-writing privileges on parenteral nutrition use.

Previous studies have examined the influence of a nutrition support team on parenteral nutrition (PN) use; however, the influence of registered dietitian (RD) order-writing privileges on appropriate PN use has yet to be reported. A retrospective cohort was conducted at a single tertiary care urban academic medical center to compare adult PN use before RD order-writing privileges (January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2004, pre-privileges) to after RD order-writing privileges (January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2007, post-privileges). Nineteenth-century British psychiatric writing about homosexuality before Havelock Ellis: the missing story.

Recent accounts of the emergence of sexology have addressed the role played by homosexuals and sexual radicals in framing the questions posed by psychiatrists. This work has focused largely upon American and Continental psychiatry (with regard to homosexuality), with attention to British sexologists sometimes being tied to contemporary feminist concerns with the sexual double standard. In both cases, psychiatrists are shown to be following other social movements. In the existing work, British psychiatrists of the nineteenth century who wrote about homosexuality have been largely ignored becaus
