Analysis of ultra-short implants with different angulations: a retrospective case-control study with 2 to 9 years of follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: Does the angulation of ultrashort implants influence the stability of the peri-implant bone? The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-axial ultrashort implants after 2 to 9 years of follow-up in resorbed alveolar ridges. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All partially edentulous patients with ultrashort implants (< 6 mm) used in the posterior region of an atrophic mandible or maxilla, to support partial dentures in conjunction with standard implants, were included in this study. Peri-implant bone loss, success and survival rates, crestal bone levels, crown-to-implant rati

A quantification of regenerated bone tissue in human sinus biopsies: influences of anatomical region, age and sex.

OBJECTIVES: Sinus augmentation is a standard procedure to increase vertical bone supply for dental implants in the atrophic posterior maxilla. Despite the longstanding application of this method, information about some basic factors that could potentially influence bone regeneration after sinus augmentation is rare. The objective of this study was therefore to quantify the impact of the maxillary region (premolar/molar) and patients' age and sex on bone regeneration after sinus grafting. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sinus augmentation procedures were performed in 107 patients (66 female: 52.8 ± 11.0

Lepromatous leprosy: a review and case report.

Leprosy is a contagious and chronic systemic granulomatous disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae (Hansen s bacillus). It is transmitted from person to person and has a long incubation period (between two and six years). The disease presents polar clinical forms (the multibacillary lepromatous leprosy and the paucibacillary tuberculoid leprosy), as well as other intermediate forms with hybrid characteristics. Oral manifestations usually appear in lepromatous leprosy and occur in 20-60% of cases. They may take the form of multiple nodules (lepromas) that progress to necrosis and ulceration. The

Evaluation of the efficacy of autogenous bone graft in combination with hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate in direct sinus augmentation - A clinical, radiographic, and histologic study.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus augmentation is a predictable procedure to increase bone height in atrophic posterior maxilla. Different protocols and procedures for sinus lift are available. Many biomaterials are employed in this technique; however, no biomaterial has been proven as the best. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center, prospective, interventional, single-arm study was done for evaluation of the efficacy of biphasic calcium phosphate mixed in a 1:1 ratio with autogenous bone graft. Patients with ≤5 mm of subantral bone height were recruited. Sinus membrane was elevated using piezosur

Immediate Loading of Zygomatic Implants Using a Dual Scan Technique.

The immediate loading protocol has become increasingly popular due to the progressive growth in demand for a reduction in treatment times. The possibility of applying this protocol would depend on certain important factors. The application of the digital workflow mentioned in the protocol guarantees rapidity, precision, and esthetics. This report aims to describe a fully digital workflow using a dual scan impression technique to fabricate immediate fixed complete dentures (FCDs) for zygomatic and standard implants. A 58-year-old female patient requested treatment for her severely atrophic maxi

Crestal endoscopic approach for evaluating sinus membrane elevation technique.

UNLABELLED: Closed sinus lifting is a unique technique in being simple and less invasive (Summers, Compendium 15(6):698, 1994). However, it is blind to assess the safety of sinus lining during lifting without perforation. Previously, sinus membrane was assessed endoscopically in an invasive way. We aimed to judge clinically the sinus membrane integrity after crestal elevation by a direct simple less invasive endoscopic visual assessment through the crestal osteotomy site. To confirm undetected perforation, the sinus membrane was monitored dynamically by introducing the endoscope through a trep

Cone Beam CT-Based Preoperative Volumetric Estimation of Bone Graft Required for Lateral Window Sinus Augmentation, Compared with Intraoperative Findings: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of an atrophic maxilla creates a serious challenge in cases of implant placement, while maxillary sinus pneumatization further complicates the surgery. This pilot study was performed to investigate the validity of two techniques used to estimate the volumes of bone graft material required in cases that included lateral window sinus augmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cone beam computed tomography was used for preoperative volumetric analysis of the maxillary sinus. The analysis was performed using the manual measurement of sinus dimensions, as well as automated mea

Rationale for tilted implants: FEA considerations and clinical reports.

The prevalence of the elderly population, as well as life expectancy, increased in the final decades of the 20th century, as described in the World Health Organization 2004 Annual Report. The edentulous condition therefore has a negative impact on the oral health-related quality of life. Patients wearing complete dentures for many years infact, and especially in the mandible, are often unsatisfied because of the instability of the prosthesis during speaking and eating. To date dental implant treatment is well documented as a predictable treatment for partial or complete edentulism. On the othe

Combined skeletal and soft tissue reconstruction for severe Parry-Romberg syndrome.

Parry-Romberg syndrome is an acquired facial deformity that manifests as progressive hemifacial atrophy that has unknown cause. Many surgical techniques to address it have been reported, such as fat transplantation and use of free flaps. Undoubtedly, the results of such techniques can be satisfactory for mild hemifacial atrophy after soft tissue restoration. But in severe cases, except for large-scale soft tissue atrophy, the osseous framework is involved, rendering their management difficult, and the results are often inadequate. On the basis of the severity of facial soft tissue atrophy and

A literature review on biomaterials in sinus augmentation procedures.

BACKGROUND: Sinus augmentation is a common procedure to increase bone volume and allow for proper implant placement in the atrophic posterior maxilla. Although the patient's own bone is considered the best grafting material, various synthetic or bovine-derived alternatives are used to simplify the grafting procedure. PURPOSE: The overall objective of this review was to assess the efficacy of different graft materials used in sinus augmentation procedures as demonstrated in animal studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A specific and sensitive database was initially created via PUBMED, focusing on s

Computer-assisted autogenous shell technique and simultaneous implantation for reconstruction of an atrophic alveolar ridge in the esthetic zone.

The autogenous shell technique offers strong biological performance by combining the mechanical stability of cortical bone with the rapid revascularization of particulate autograft. However, the method is highly technique-dependent, particularly when performed concurrently with implant placement, as both the bone shell and implant require spatially accurate positioning. A technique involving a fully digital protocol delivering controlled, predictable, and prosthetically guided shell grafting with simultaneous implant placement is described.

Impact of framework material, cantilever design, and wing configuration on stress distribution in patient specific additively manufactured subperiosteal jaw implants: a 3D finite element analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Recent advancements in digital technology have revolutionized implant dentistry, particularly with additively manufactured subperiosteal jaw implants (AMSJIs). These implants allow patient-specific designs that adapt to anatomical requirements. However, optimizing stress distribution remains a challenge. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the stress distribution in AMSJIs and surrounding bone by analyzing different framework materials (PEEK and Co-Cr), anterior wing designs (I- and Y-shaped), and cantilever extensions using three-dimensional finite element analysis. METHODS:
