Psychiatric beds and prison populations in 17 Latin American countries between 1991 and 2017: rates, trends and an inverse relationship between the two indicators.

BACKGROUND: In 1990, Latin American countries committed to psychiatric reforms including psychiatric bed removals. Aim of the study was to quantify changes in psychiatric bed numbers and prison population rates after the initiation of psychiatric reforms in Latin America. METHODS: We searched primary sources to collect numbers of psychiatric beds and prison population rates across Latin America between the years 1991 and 2017. Changes of psychiatric bed numbers were compared against trends of incarceration rates and tested for associations using fixed-effects regression of panel data. Economi

Immunohistochemical expression of ARID1A in penile squamous cell carcinomas: a tissue microarray study of 112 cases.

ARID1A, a member of the chromatin remodeling genes family, has been suggested as a novel tumor suppressor gene in gynecologic malignancies. However, its role in penile cancer has yet to be determined. This study assesses the immunohistochemical expression of ARID1A in penile squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and its association with pathologic features, human papillomavirus (HPV) status, and previously reported mammalian target of rapamycin pathway markers in the same cohort. Four tissue microarrays were constructed from 112 cases of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded penile SCC from Paraguay. Each

Newborn screening in Latin America at the beginning of the 21st century.

Newborn screening (NBS) in Latin America took its first steps in the mid-1970s. Nevertheless, many years elapsed before it achieved its integration within the public health care system and its systematic and continuous implementation under a programme structure. Latin American countries can be characterized not only by their great geographic, demographic, ethnic, economic and health system diversity, but also by their heterogeneity in NBS activities, which gives rise to variation in degree of organization: countries with optimal fulfilment (Cuba, Costa Rica, Chile, Uruguay); others rapidly exp

Characterisation of Trypanosoma cruzi populations by DNA polymorphism of the cruzipain gene detected by single-stranded DNA conformation polymorphism (SSCP) and direct sequencing.

Fifty fresh isolates of Trypanosoma cruzi from Triatoma dimidiata vectors and 31 from patients with Chagas' disease were analysed for DNA polymorphisms within the 432-bp core region of the cruzipain gene which encodes the active site of cathepsin L-like cystein proteinase. The cruzipain gene showed signs of polymorphism consisting of four different DNA sequences in Central and South American isolates of T. cruzi. The PCR fragments of Guatemalan isolates could be divided into three groups, Groups 1, 2 and 3, based on different patterns of single-stranded DNA conformation polymorphism. All of th

Snake bites by the jararacuçu (Bothrops jararacussu): clinicopathological studies of 29 proven cases in São Paulo State, Brazil.

The jararacuçu, one of the most dreaded snakes of Brazil, southern Bolivia, Paraguay and northeastern Argentina, is a heavily-built pit viper which may grow to a length of 2.2 m. Up to 1000 mg (dry weight) of highly-lethal venom may be milked from its venom glands on a single occasion. It has accounted for 0.8% to 10% of series of snake bites in São Paulo State, Brazil. We examined 29 cases of proven jararacuçu bites recruited over a 20-year period in two São Paulo hospitals. Severe signs of local and systemic envenoming, (local necrosis, shock, spontaneous systemic bleeding, renal failure) we

Measuring illicit cigarette purchases in Bolivia: evidence from an intercept survey.

BACKGROUND: Bolivia has one of the lowest tobacco tax rates in the Americas and shares a long border with Paraguay, a documented regional source of illicit cigarettes. The most recent estimate of illicit trade in Bolivia dates to 2002 and relied on industry-reported sales data. We provide the first independent, direct estimate of illicit cigarette penetration in the country. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 2366 adults who smoke in Bolivia's three largest metropolitan areas (La Paz/El Alto, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz) between July and August 2024. Cigarette packs were photogra

A new large violin spider from Argentina, with a discussion on the homology and evolution of female genital structures in Loxosceles (Araneae: Sicariidae).

Violin spiders are an old, diverse genus of spiders, which includes medically significant species. Among its members, the Neotropical laeta group is particularly notable, as it includes the largest spiders of the genus, such as Loxosceles laeta (Nicolet). In this paper, I describe a new species belonging to this group, Loxosceles galianoa , sp. nov., from male and female specimens collected in the dry Argentinean north-west. The new species is the southernmost native member of the laeta group, and its phylogenetic placement is confirmed by a novel phylogenetic analysis based on molecular data

Black-goggled tanagers Trichothraupis melanops (Vieillot, 1818) are passerine birds commonly observed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Argentina and Paraguay. Tanagers are among the passerines with the highest prevalence and density of coccidian parasites, mainly due to their frugivorous feeding habits that favor fecal-oral transmission. In this context, the current study identifies a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 parasitizing black-goggled tanagers captured in the Itatiaia National Park, a protected area with a high degree of vulnerability in Southeastern Brazil. The oocysts of Iso

A field study of the survival and dispersal pattern of Lutzomyia longipalpis in an endemic area of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil.

Zoonotic Visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) is a neglected tropical disease that in the Americas is caused by the infection of Leishmania infantum and the domestic dog (Canis familiaris) is the main parasite reservoir in urban areas. The parasite is mainly transmitted by populations of the sibling species Lutzomyia longipalpis that has been spreading in countries including Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and more recently Uruguay. Although bionomic parameters such as population survival and the duration of the gonotrophic cycle are critical in evaluating vector capacity, field studies have rarely been a

Availability, Use, and Barriers to Cardiac Rehabilitation in LMIC.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a cornerstone of secondary prevention of ischemic heart disease. It is critically important in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), where the burden of ischemic heart disease is substantial and growing. However, the availability and utilization of CR in LMIC is not systematically known. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to characterize the availability, use, and barriers to the use of CR. METHODS: Electronic databases (Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science) were searched from January 1, 1980 to May 31, 2013 for articles on CR in LMIC. Cit

Strong association of insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor expression with histologic grade, subtype, and HPV status in penile squamous cell carcinomas: a tissue microarray study of 112 cases.

Insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1R) plays a key role in cell growth and transformation. It is overexpressed in several solid tumors. This study evaluates IGF1R immunoexpression in penile squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Four tissue microarrays were built from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded blocks of 112 penile SCC from Paraguay. Membranous IGF1R expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry using two different approaches. An H-score was calculated in each spot (stain intensity by extent), and a median score per tumor was obtained. The second approach consisted of a score similar

Six novel mutations of the LDL receptor gene in FH kindred of Sicilian and Paraguayan descent.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant inherited disease caused by mutations in the gene coding for the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R). It is characterized by a high concentration of low density lipoprotein (LDL), which frequently gives rise to premature coronary artery disease. We studied the probands of five FH Sicilian families with 'definite' FH and one proband of Paraguayan descent with homozygous FH who has been treated with an effective living-donor liver transplantation. In order to seek the molecular defect in these six families, we used direct sequencin
