[Cancer cachexia and white adipose tissue browning].

Cancer cachexia occurs in a majority of advanced cancer patients. These patients with impaired physical function are unable to tolerance cancer treatment well and have a significantly reduced survival rate. Currently, there is no effective clinical treatment available for cancer cachexia, therefore, it is necessary to clarify the molecular mechanisms of cancer cachexia, moreover, new therapeutic targets for cancer cachexia treatment are urgently needed. Very recent studies suggest that, during cancer cachexia, white adipose tissue undergo a 'browning' process, resulting in increased lipid mobi

White Matter Diseases with Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation.

White matter diseases include a wide spectrum of disorders that have in common impairment of normal myelination, either by secondary destruction of previously myelinated structures (demyelinating processes) or by primary abnormalities of myelin formation (dysmyelinating processes). The pathogenesis of many white matter diseases remains poorly understood. Demyelinating disorders are the object of this review and will be further divided into autoimmune, infectious, vascular, and toxic-metabolic processes. Autoimmune processes include multiple sclerosis and related diseases: tumefactive demyelina

Scanning electron microscopy of superficial white onychomycosis.

Superficial white onychomycosis is characterized by opaque, friable, whitish superficial spots on the nail plate. We examined an affected halux nail of a 20-year-old male patient with scanning electron microscopy. The mycological examination isolated Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Abundant hyphae with the formation of arthrospores were found on the nail's surface, forming small fungal colonies. These findings showed the great capacity for dissemination of this form of onychomycosis.

Congenital cardiac anomalies and white matter injury.

Cardiac abnormalities are the most common birth defects. Derangement of circulatory flow affects many vital organs; without proper supply of oxygenated blood, the brain is particularly vulnerable. Although surgical interventions have greatly reduced mortality rates, patients often suffer an array of neurological deficits throughout life. Neuroimaging provides a macroscopic assessment of brain injury and has shown that white matter (WM) is at risk. Oligodendrocytes and myelinated axons have been identified as major targets of WM injury, but still little is known about how congenital heart anoma

White matter involvement in chronic musculoskeletal pain.

UNLABELLED: There is emerging evidence that chronic musculoskeletal pain is associated with anatomic and functional abnormalities in gray matter. However, little research has investigated the relationship between chronic musculoskeletal pain and white matter. In this study, we used whole-brain tract-based spatial statistics and region-of-interest analyses of diffusion tensor imaging data to demonstrate that patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain exhibit several abnormal metrics of white matter integrity compared with healthy controls. Chronic musculoskeletal pain was associated with lower

White-blue pyelocalyceal cyst with hydrotic glomerulonephritis.

A 5-month-old male infant presented with a 15 day history of distension of abdomen. On clinical examination, a soft lump was palpable in the left lumbar region. Radiological findings suggested an enlarged non-functional left kidney with ureteropelvic adhesive obstruction. The left renal mass was excised and submitted for histopathological examination. The excised renal mass was cystic with its wall partly white and partly blue. Gross and histopathological findings were diagnostic of a white-blue pyelocalyceal cyst with hydrotic glomerulonephritis. This entity needs to be differentiated from a

White matter atrophy in Alzheimer's disease variants.

BACKGROUND: In comparison with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD, onset, >65 years), early-age-of-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD, onset, <65 years) more often presents with language, visuospatial, and/or executive impairment, often occurring earlier than a progressive memory deficit. The logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia (lv-PPA) and posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) have recently been described as possible atypical variants of EOAD. Lv-PPA is characterized by isolated language deficit, whereas PCA is characterized by predominant visuospatial deficits. Severe hemispheric gray

White-eyed medial wall orbital blowout fracture.

The white-eyed orbital floor blowout fracture is most commonly seen in children and adolescents. The orbital floor is the most common fracture location with entrapment of inferior orbital contents and/or the inferior rectus muscle in a "trapdoor" fashion. Other sites may also be fractured either simultaneous to the floor or in isolation. The authors describe an isolated orbital medial wall fracture with entrapment of the medial rectus muscle in an adolescent and discuss treatment options.

Alpers syndrome with prominent white matter changes.

Alpers syndrome is a fatal neurogenetic disorder caused by the mutations in POLG1 gene encoding the mitochondrial DNA polymerase gamma (polgamma). Two missense variants, c.248T > C (p.L83P), c.2662G > A (p.G888S) in POLG1 were detected in a 10-year-old Chinese girl with refractory seizures, acute liver failure after exposure to valproic acid, cortical blindness, and psychomotor regression. The pathology of left occipital lobe showed neuronal loss, spongiform degeneration, astrocytosis, and demyelination. In addition, there were prominent white matter changes in a series of brain magnetic reson

Eating pathology among Black and White smokers.

Among White smokers, many females use smoking as a weight control strategy. Little is known about the relationship between eating pathology and smoking among Black females, and whether smokers who enroll in treatment differ in eating pathology from smokers who decline treatment. We examined eating pathology among Black and White smokers who enrolled in a smoking cessation treatment and those who declined treatment. Participants were 100 Black and 100 White female smokers (ages 18-65) who completed three measures of eating pathology. After controlling for BMI, Whites reported greater levels of

White matter alterations associated with chromosomal disorders.

White matter alterations in chromosomal disorders have been reported mainly in 18q-syndrome. Our aim was to evaluate white matter alterations in patients with chromosomal abnormalities detected through conventional cytogenetic techniques. Forty-four patients with chromosomal abnormalities, excluding trisomy 21, were diagnosed in our hospital between May 1999 and December 2002 (24 males, 20 females; mean age 6 years 4 months [SD 3 years 2 months], range 0 to 18 years). Of the 44 patients, 14 had brain magnetic resonance imaging (12 males, 2 females; mean age 4 years 2 months [SD 4 years 4 month

Familial optic atrophy with white matter changes.

We report two brothers who suffer from infantile onset optic atrophy and blindness. MRI of the brain demonstrated periventricular white matter changes in both children. Neurological and developmental examination are normal. Extensive laboratory investigations rule out metabolic disorders that can be associated with optic atrophy. No mutations associated with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) were found and sequencing of the mitochondrially encoded complex 1 subunits was normal. We suggest that this family represents either an atypical variant of LHON with a yet undescribed mtDNA mutatio

Diagnostic aspects of vibration-induced white finger.

Vibration-induced white finger (VWF) is a secondary type of Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) caused by exposure to hand-arm vibration. The present review concerns the cold-provoked attack of RP in vasospastic VWF. It concentrates on the most common clinical and laboratory methods used to diagnose RP in vibration-exposed subjects. Some physiological aspects of the attack of RP are mentioned to elucidate the diagnostic principles of the tests. Anamnestic diagnostics by medical interviews and questionnaires as well as cold-provocation tests with detection of finger colour, finger systolic blood pressure

Mechanisms of leptin secretion from white adipocytes.

The mechanisms regulating leptin secretion were investigated in isolated rat white adipocytes. Insulin (1-100 nM) linearly stimulated leptin secretion from incubated adipocytes for at least 2 h. The adrenergic agonists norepinephrine, isoproterenol (two nonselective beta-agonists), or CL-316243 (potent beta3) all inhibited insulin (10 nM)-stimulated leptin release. The inhibitory effects of norepinephrine and isoproterenol could be reversed not only by the nonselective antagonist propranolol but also by the selective antagonists ICI-89406 (beta1) or ICI-118551 (beta2), the beta2-antagonist bei

'Reverse white-coat hypertension' in older hypertensives.

OBJECTIVES: The role of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) in the elderly is unclear. This study has examined differences between clinic and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) in a large cohort of older hypertensives, with particular respect to the factors influencing the direction and magnitude of this difference. DESIGN: The Second Australian National Blood Pressure Study (ANBP2) is a general practice-based randomized-outcome trial in 6083 older hypertensives treated with an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or diuretic-based regimen. Before starting treatment a subset of 7
