Tissue-specific nuclear spin-spin relaxation anisotropy and water nano-confinement in celery stalks.

Recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements have revealed proton spin-spin relaxation anisotropy in only one component of the celery stalk, even though water accounts for up to 95% of its weight and is present throughout all its tissues. Our analysis shows that this anisotropy arises from nanoconfined water within the collenchyma cell walls. In these regions, restricted molecular motion and hydrogen bonding between water molecules and cell-wall constituents give rise to residual anisotropic dipolar interactions. In contrast, water in the xylem, phloem, and parenchyma occupies larger c

Unraveling the growth and volatile compound profiles of celery under different supplementary light durations via comprehensive evaluation and GC-IMS.

The volatile substances fingerprinting of celery under three different light conditions was established using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). Supplementary light intensity was set at 200 µmol m-2 s-1 with light durations of 6 h d-1 (T1) and 10 h d-1 (T2), and celery grown under natural light only was used as the control. The results indicated that the highest values of fresh and dry weights were recorded under the T2 treatment. A total of 59 volatile compounds of celery were detected, including olefins, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, and furans. In addition, flavor differ

dl-3-n-Butylphthalide prevents oxidative damage and reduces mitochondrial dysfunction in an MPP(+)-induced cellular model of Parkinson's disease.

The aim of the present study was to explore the neuroprotective effects and mechanisms of action of dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) in a 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridiniumion (MPP(+))-induced cellular model of Parkinson's disease (PD). NBP was extracted from seeds of Apium graveolens Linn. (Chinese celery). MPP(+) treatment of PC12 cells caused reduced viability, formation of reactive oxygen, and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential. Our results indicated that NBP reduced the cytotoxicity of MPP(+) by suppressing the mitochondrial permeability transition, reducing oxidative stress, and increasi

Research progress of 3-n-butylphthalide and its derivatives in combating cerebral ischemia.

Ischemic stroke (IS) presents a major threat to human life and health due to its high disability and mortality rates. 3-n-Butylphthalide (NBP), derived from celery seeds of the Apiaceae family native to the Mediterranean region, was first introduced in China for acute IS treatment in 2004. NBP demonstrates multiple therapeutic actions, including reconstruction of microcirculation in the cerebral ischemia area, inhibition of platelet aggregation, reduction of cerebral infarction volume, maintenance of blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity, and enhancement of cerebral blood perfusion. However, its

Kudzu Celery Decoction Exerts Protection against Sepsis-Induced Myocardial Injury.

Myocardial dysfunction is well-recognized manifestations of organ dysfunction in sepsis, which is the leading cause of death in critically ill patients. The underlying mechanisms associated with sepsis-induced myocardial injury (SIMI) include cardiac contractility, inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Kudzu celery decoction (KCD) is composed of a variety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) such as kudzu and celery. The previous study found that the main ingredients in kudzu and celery have also been proved to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and other biological acti

The insecticidal activity of four medicinal plants against the blowfly Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

BACKGROUND: The larvae of Lucilia sericata induce myiasis and transmit mycobacterial infections to humans and animals. Consequently, the blowfly should be controlled for human welfare and economic reasons. METHODS: The insecticidal effect of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), celery (Apium graveolens), radish (Raphanus sativus), and mustard (Brassica compestris) against the third larval instars of L. sericata was evaluated, for the first time, through ingestion assays. The effect of sublethal concentrations on certain biological aspects, such as the pupation rates and adult emergence, was

Volatile metabolomics analysis reveals the flavor response of different parts of celery to ultraviolet radiation.

Volatile metabolomics was used to analyze volatile organic compounds in celery (Apium graveolens L. cv. Dayehuang) leaves and petioles under ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Results indicated that celery encompassed 328 terpenes, 299 esters, 178 heterocyclic compounds, and 166 ketones. The additional UV radiation altered ester and heterocyclic compound in celery leaves and changed terpenoids, aldehyde, and ester in celery petiole. The content of volatile organic compounds in leaves and petiole of celery under UV radiation was significantly higher than that grown without UV radiation. The content of

Phosphatidylinositol phosphodiesterase in higher plants.

1. The lower regions of the stem of celery (Apium graveolens L.) contain a soluble enzyme that hydrolyses phosphatidylinositol. 2. The lipoidal product of hydrolysis is diacylglycerol, and the water-soluble products are 1:2-cyclic phosphoinositol and phosphoinositol in the approximate proportions of 60% and 40% respectively: this indicates that a phosphodiesterase (phospholipase C-like) activity is cleaving the phosphatidylinositol. 3. The enzyme requires a bivalent cation, Ca2+ being the most effective activator. 4. The enzyme has a pH optimum, depending on conditions of assay, of pH 5.9-6.6

Ligand competition strategy-induced metal-organic gel MOG-808 for the detection and removal of Cr(VI) from celery juice.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contamination of vegetables significantly threatens food safety due to its carcinogenicity, toxicity, and bioaccumulation properties. This work synthesizes metal-organic gel MOG-808 by employing a ligand competition method for the detection and removal of Cr(VI) in celery juice. Introducing bipyridine to compete with the ligand of MOF-808 induced transformation into amorphous MOG-808 with low coordination active sites to specifically recognize Cr(VI). MOG-808 demonstrates excellent fluorescence detection and adsorption capabilities for Cr(VI) with a limit of detect

Potential use of hydroxyapatite combined with hydrated lime or zeolite to promote growth and reduce cadmium transfer in the soil-celery-human system.

Although hydroxyapatite (HAP) can prominently lower Cd uptake by celery from Cd-polluted soil, its high application rates in reality may lead to high cost and potential environmental risk. Therefore, we aimed to clarify whether combined amendments of HAP and another low-cost material (hydrated lime, corn straw-derived biochar, or zeolite) with reduced application rate of each single amendment could significantly decrease Cd transfer in soil-celery-human system without side effect on celery growth through a pot experiment. Results revealed that adding biochar, HAP, zeolite, or combined amendmen

East-west divergence and metabolic differentiation in celery domestication.

Celery (Apium graveolens) is a globally cultivated vegetable renowned for its health-promoting and nutraceutical benefits. Exploring its genomic and metabolic diversity can help to facilitate breeding selection. Here, by integrating genomic and metabolomic analyses of 305 globally representative accessions, we reveal pronounced east-west population structure that parallels geographical distribution and varietal differentiation, with three major variety groups showing distinct domestication trajectories. We identify key loci associated with domestication-related traits, including petiole morpho

DL-3-n-butylphthalide alleviates motor disturbance by suppressing ferroptosis in a rat model of Parkinson's disease.

DL-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP)-a compound isolated from Apium graveolens seeds-is protective against brain ischemia via various mechanisms in humans and has been approved for treatment of acute ischemic stroke. NBP has shown recent potential as a treatment for Parkinson's disease. However, the underlying mechanism of action of NBP remains poorly understood. In this study, we established a rat model of Parkinson's disease by intraperitoneal injection of rotenone for 28 successive days, followed by intragastric injection of NBP for 14-28 days. We found that NBP greatly alleviated rotenone-induced m

Modulation of Photosystem II Function in Celery via Foliar-Applied Salicylic Acid during Gradual Water Deficit Stress.

Water deficit is the major stress factor magnified by climate change that causes the most reductions in plant productivity. Knowledge of photosystem II (PSII) response mechanisms underlying crop vulnerability to drought is critical to better understanding the consequences of climate change on crop plants. Salicylic acid (SA) application under drought stress may stimulate PSII function, although the exact mechanism remains essentially unclear. To reveal the PSII response mechanism of celery plants sprayed with water (WA) or SA, we employed chlorophyll fluorescence imaging analysis at 48 h, 96 h
