Evaluating a novel reproduction number estimation method: a comparative analysis.

This paper presents practical methodologies for determining effective reproduction numbers, R(t), providing valuable insights for researchers and public health officials. It proposes multiple simplified approaches for estimating R(t) of infectious diseases and compares their effectiveness. These approaches include methods based on exponential, fixed (delta), normal, and gamma distributions for the generation time. The exponential and fixed generation time methods offer convenience as they rely solely on the mean generation time and the number of new infections. However, they are sensitive to t

Fractional-calculus analysis of the transmission dynamics of the dengue infection.

In this research paper, a novel approach in dengue modeling with the asymptomatic carrier and reinfection via the fractional derivative is suggested to deeply interrogate the comprehensive transmission phenomena of dengue infection. The proposed system of dengue infection is represented in the Liouville-Caputo fractional framework and investigated for basic properties, that is, uniqueness, positivity, and boundedness of the solution. We used the next-generation technique in order to determine the basic reproduction number R0 for the suggested model of dengue infection; moreover, we conduct a s

Stability Analysis and Optimal Control Strategies of an Echinococcosis Transmission Model.

This paper presents a deterministic compartmental model for echinococcosis transmission dynamics. The basic reproduction number of the model determines the existence and stability of the disease-free and disease-endemic equilibrium points. We further formulate the optimal control problem and obtain the necessary conditions to minimize the number of infected individuals and the associated costs. Numerical simulations show that optimal control strategies can significantly reduce the number of infected individuals to lower levels. Environmental disinfection may be essential for the elimination of

Epidemiological Analysis of the 2019 Dengue Epidemic in Bhutan.

Bhutan experienced its largest and first nation-wide dengue epidemic in 2019. The cases in 2019 were greater than the total number of cases in all the previous years. This study aimed to characterize the spatiotemporal patterns and effective reproduction number of this explosive epidemic. Weekly notified dengue cases were extracted from the National Early Warning, Alert, Response and Surveillance (NEWARS) database to describe the spatial and temporal patterns of the epidemic. The time-varying, temperature-adjusted cohort effective reproduction number was estimated over the course of the epidem

Coupling the modeling of phage-bacteria interaction and cholera epidemiological model with and without optimal control.

In this work, we assess the impact of the phage-bacteria infection and optimal control on the indirectly transmitted cholera disease. The phage-bacteria interactions are described by predator-prey system using the Smith functional response, which takes into account the number of bacteria binding sites. The study is done in two steps, namely the model without control and the model with control. For the first scenario, we explicitly compute the basic reproduction number R0 which serves as stability threshold and bifurcation parameter. The proposed model exhibits a bi-stability phenomenon via the

Modelling tuberculosis transmission dynamics in Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health challenge requiring urgent interventions to achieve the World Health Organization (WHO) End TB Strategy targets. This study aimed to develop and validate a compartmental model to estimate the TB reproduction number (R0) and TB incidence in Malaysia, identify parameters influencing R0 and TB incidence, and simulate TB incidence using baseline and intervention scenarios to 2035 to assess compatibility with achieving the WHO End TB Strategy target. METHODS: A Susceptible-Latent Fast-Latent Slow-Infectious-Recovered (SLFLSIR) co

Influence of demographically-realistic mortality schedules on vaccination strategies in age-structured models.

Because demographic realism complicates analysis, mathematical modelers either ignore demography or make simplifying assumptions (e.g., births and deaths equal). But human populations differ demographically, perhaps most notably in their mortality schedules. We developed an age-stratified population model with births, deaths, aging and mixing between age groups. The model includes types I and II mortality as special cases. We used the gradient approach (Feng et al., 2015, 2017) to explore the impact of mortality patterns on optimal strategies for mitigating vaccine-preventable diseases such as

A note on advection-diffusion cholera model with bacterial hyperinfectivity.

This note gives a supplement to the recent work of Wang and Wang (2019) in the sense that: (i) for the critical case where $\Re_{0}=1$, cholera-free steady state is globally asymptotically stable; (ii) in a homogeneous case, the positive constant steady-state is globally asymptotically stable with additional condition when $\Re_{0}>1$. Our first result is achieved by proving the local asymptotic stability and global attractivity. Our second result is obtained by Lyapunov function.

Modeling and analysis of the transmission dynamics of cystic echinococcosis: Effects of increasing the number of sheep.

A transmission dynamics model with the logistic growth of cystic echinococcus in sheep was formulated and analyzed. The basic reproduction number was derived and the results showed that the global dynamical behaviors were determined by its value. The disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable when the value of the basic reproduction number is less than one; otherwise, there exists a unique endemic equilibrium and it is globally asymptotically stable. Sensitivity analysis and uncertainty analysis of the basic reproduction number were also performed to screen the important factor

A Mathematical Model Analysis for the Transmission Dynamics of Leptospirosis Disease in Human and Rodent Populations.

This work is aimed at formulating and analyzing a compartmental mathematical model to investigate the impact of rodent-born leptospirosis on the human population by considering a load of pathogenic agents of the disease in an environment and the incidence rate of human infection due to the interaction between infected rodents and the environment. Firstly, the basic properties of the model, the equilibria points, and their stability analysis are studied. We also found the basic reproduction number (R 0) of the model using the next-generation matrix approach. From the stability analysis, we obta

Transmission dynamics and control of tuberculosis in high-altitude regions: a modelling study in Xizang, China.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate tuberculosis (TB) incidence trends in the high-altitude Xizang, China, and to explore the key intervention strategies on achieving the WHO 2030 TB control target. DESIGN: We developed a susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered transmission model using routinely reported TB surveillance data from 2004 to 2022. Scenario-based simulations were conducted to project future TB incidence under alternative intervention strategies. Model assumptions are as follows: (1) a stable population, (2) lifelong vaccine-induced immunity, (3) infectiousness of active TB cases, (4) relapse

Dynamical analysis of a heroin-cocaine epidemic model with nonlinear incidence and spatial heterogeneity.

In this paper, we investigated a new heroin-cocaine epidemic model which incorporates spatial heterogeneity and nonlinear incidence rate. The main project of this paper is to explore the threshold dynamics in terms of the basic reproduction number R0, which was defined by applying the next-generation operator. The threshold type results shown that if R0<1, then the drug-free steady state is globally asymptotically stable. If R0>1, then heroin-cocaine spread is uniformly persistent. Furthermore, the globally asymptotic stability of the drug-free steady state has been established for the critica

Stability analysis and optimal control of a rumor propagation model based on two communication modes: friends and marketing account pushing.

In addition to spreading information among friends, information can also be pushed through marketing accounts to non-friends. Based on these two information dissemination channels, this paper establishes a Susceptible-Infection-Marketing-Removed (SIMR) rumor propagation model. First, we obtain the basic reproduction number $ R_0 $ through the next generation matrix. Second, we prove that the solutions of the model are uniformly bounded and discuss asymptotically stable of the rumor-free equilibrium point and the rumor-prevailing equilibrium point. Third, we propose an optimal control strategy

Supercritical and homogenous transmission of monkeypox in the capital of China.

Starting from May 31, 2023, the local transmission of monkeypox (Mpox) in mainland China began in Beijing. Till now, the transmission characteristics have not been explored. Based on the daily Mpox incidence data in the first 3 weeks of Beijing (from May 31 to June 21, 2023), we employed the instant-individual heterogeneity transmission model to simultaneously calculate the effective reproduction number (Re ) and the degree of heterogeneity (k) of the Beijing epidemic. We additionally simulated the monthly infection size in Beijing from July to November and compared with the reported data to p

Estimates of mpox effective reproduction number in Spain, April-August 2022.

We analysed the transmission of the human mpox virus in Spain by estimating the effective reproduction number of the disease from official surveillance data. Our computations show that this decreased steadily after an initial burst phase, dropping below 1 on July 12, and thus the outbreak was expected to reduce in the following weeks. Differences in trends were found across geographical regions of the country and across MSM and heterosexual populations.

The backward bifurcation of an age-structured cholera transmission model with saturation incidence.

In this paper, we consider an age-structured cholera model with saturation incidence, vaccination age of vaccinated individuals, infection age of infected individuals, and biological age of pathogens. First, the basic reproduction number is calculated. When the basic reproduction number is less than one, the disease-free equilibrium is locally stable. Further, the existence of backward bifurcation of the model is obtained. Numerically, we also compared the effects of various control measures, including basic control measures and vaccination, on the number of infected individuals.

Global dynamics and optimal control of a cholera transmission model with vaccination strategy and multiple pathways.

In this paper, we consider a cholera infection model with vaccination and multiple transmission pathways. Dynamical properties of the model are analyzed in detail. It is shown that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is less than unity; the endemic equilibrium exists and is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is greater than unity. In addition, the model is successfully used to fit the real disease situation of cholera outbreak in Somalia. We consider an optimal control problem of cholera transmission with

Modelling and control of cholera on networks with a common water source.

A mathematical model is formulated for the transmission and spread of cholera in a heterogeneous host population that consists of several patches of homogeneous host populations sharing a common water source. The basic reproduction number ℛ0 is derived and shown to determine whether or not cholera dies out. Explicit formulas are derived for target/type reproduction numbers that measure the control strategies required to eradicate cholera from all patches.

Estimating the transmission potential of supercritical processes based on the final size distribution of minor outbreaks.

Use of the final size distribution of minor outbreaks for the estimation of the reproduction numbers of supercritical epidemic processes has yet to be considered. We used a branching process model to derive the final size distribution of minor outbreaks, assuming a reproduction number above unity, and applying the method to final size data for pneumonic plague. Pneumonic plague is a rare disease with only one documented major epidemic in a spatially limited setting. Because the final size distribution of a minor outbreak needs to be normalized by the probability of extinction, we assume that t
