[Severe microphthalmus with Patau's syndrome (author's transl)].

The authors describe a new-born child with Patau's syndrome in which D-trisomy was zytogenetically proved. The interest in this case is justified by the fact that an anophthalmos was suspected on clinical examination, but the histological examination showed a severe grade of bulb hypoplasia. The authors stress the significance of chromosome examination in cases of multiple congenital deformities associated with eye changes.

Mental retardation with 45 chromosomes 45,XX,--5,--14,+der(5) t(5,14)(p15;q13) mat due to familial balanced reciprocal translocation.

A girl with severe mental retardation and odd facies and some features of the cri-duchat syndrome was found to have only 45 chromosomes. Her karyotype was 45,XX, -5, -14,+der(5) t(5,14)(p15;q13) mat. Her mother and her two sisters were found to be balanced reciprocal translocation carriers having 46 chromosomes, one of which was a very small (14pter leads to 14q13::5p15leads to 5pter) that was missing in the proposita.

Familial pericentric inversion of chromosome 19, inv(19) (p13q13) with a note on genetic counseling of pericentric inversion carriers.

An inmate of a hospital for the mentally retarded was found during a cytogenetic screening programme to have karyotype 46,XY,inv(19)(p13q13)mat. Clinical, cytogenetic and family findings are presented and it is concluded that the chromosomes abnormality was probably not the cause of the patient's retardation. The problem of genetic counseling of inversion carriers is examined in some detail and estimates of risk are given.

Retinoblastoma with 13q- chromosomal deletion associated with maternal paracentric inversion of 13q.

A girl with sporadic unilateral retinoblastoma and mental retardation has an interstitial deletion in the long arm of chromosome 13. Her mother has a paracentric inversion of one chromosome 13; the deleted chromosome 13 in the daughter is derived from the mother's normal chromosome 13.

De novo 13q paracentric inversion in a boy with cleft palate and mental retardation.

A paracentric inversion in chromosome 13, inv(13)(q12q22), is described in a boy with mild mental retardation and multiple minor anomalies. Bromodeoxyuridine-late replication studies showed no changes in the replication pattern of bands in the abnormal chromosome 13. The relation between the proband's phenotype and his inv(13) is unclear.

[Pure trisomy 13q13-qter caused by aneusomic recombination of a maternal pericentric inversion].

A 17-year-old girl with a severe mental retardation and facial dysmorphism was found to be carrier of an abnormal chromosome no. 13. Her mother and several other members of her family carry a pericentric inversion of chromosome no. 13. The abnormal 13 of the proposita was shown to result of "aneusomie de recombinaison" of the inverted chromosome no. 13. Biochemical, hematological, and clinical features contribute to the establishment of the clinical map of chromosome 13.

[Morphology of organs of the immune system in perinatally dying babies with autosomal trisomies].

Morphology of the immune system organs was studied in 13 babies with autosomal trisomies (Down's, Edwards', and Patau's syndromes) dying in the perinatal period and having no morphological signs of infectious diseases. The control group included 5 babies without congenital malformations and 12 babies with unclassified multiple malformations. Hypoplasia of the lymphoid tissue was demonstrated in autosomal trisomies (the relative weight of the thymus decreased 2-fold; the spleen, lymph nodes and the intestinal tract deficient in lymphocytes). In Down's disease hypoplasia was most marked; besides

Cytogenetic studies in four cases of alpha chain disease.

Cytogenetic studies were performed in four cases of alpha chain disease. Chromosomal abnormalities were found in the lymphoid cells of the mesenteric lymph nodes of three patients, two of whom had not reached the stage of overt malignant lymphoma. In two instances, a rearrangement of 14q32, resulting from a t(9;14)(p11;q32) and a t(2;14)(p12;q32) was observed. One case showed complex rearrangements including t(5;9). No abnormalities were found in the intestinal tumor of the fourth case with immunoblastic lymphoma. It is concluded that alpha chain disease is a clonal proliferation with frequent

Postzygotic D/D translocation homozygosity associated with recurrent abortions.

A Robertsonian translocation involving homologous D chromosomes was found in two cases with a history of recurrent abortions. In the first case the propositus was a 37-year-old phenotypically normal man who had a balanced t(14q14q) translocation. In the second case, a 27-year-old phenotypically normal woman was found to be a balanced t(15q15q) translocation carrier. The recurrent abortions in both cases were probably owing to this translocation.

Long arm deletion of chromosome 13 with exclusion of esterase D from 13q32 leads to 13qter.

A de novo partial 13q monosomy is reported in a severely affected 8-year-old female with the karyotype 46,XX,del(13)(q32). Abnormal features included mental retardation, delayed development, microcephaly, encephalocele, hearing loss, hypertelorism, ptosis, flat nasal bridge, protruding upper incisors, facial asymmetry, short neck, hypoplastic thumbs, scoliosis and clubfeet. The deletion was demonstrable by R-banding but was not apparent by GTG banding. The locus for esterase D (EC 3.1.1.1) is excluded from the deleted segment 13q32 leads to 13qter.

A liveborn infant with the complement 46,XX/47,XX, + 14 shared certain features in common with the following previously reported cases: (1) the one previously reported possible case of trisomy 14, (2) cases in which individuals had at least some portion of chromosome No. 14 in triplicate, and (3) cases of atypical D trisomy (Snodgrass category II). The common features include developmental retardation, wide flat nose with bulbous or wide tip, large mouth with turned down corners (some with protruding lips), short neck (some with redundant skin folds), low-set ears, retrognathia, digital anomal

Identification of inverted duplicated #15 chromosomes using bivariate flow cytometric analysis.

A dual laser FACS IV cell sorter has been used to obtain bivariate flow histograms of human metaphase chromosomes stained with the DNA-specific dyes, 33258 Hoechst and chromomycin A3. Approximately twenty distinct chromosomal fluorescence populations can be resolved using this double staining technique and the flow cytometer which has been modified only by the substitution of a specially designed air-spaced achromat for the standard focusing lens. Metaphase chromosomes from two different cell lines bearing inverted duplicated #15 autosomes have been subjected to bivariate chromosome analysis.

Retinoblastoma and chromosome 13 deletion.

Two cases of association of unilateral and bilateral retinoblastoma, respectively, with interstitial deletions of long arms of chromosome 13 are presented. The clinical pictures of both children corresponded to the moderate extent of the deletions, with both somatic and mental retardation in both children, and mild phenotypic manifestations (hypertelorism, slight epicanthi, mild facial hirsutism, and partial syndactyly in the child with unilateral retinoblastoma). Opinions concerning the association of chromosome 13 deletion with retinoblastoma are discussed.

Unusual mosaicism of de novo structural abnormalities and ocular anomalies in a male with 13 trisomy syndrome.

A body with the 13 trisomy syndrome was found to have a unique form of mosaicism in which each of the two cell lines had different structural rearrangements. The predominant cell line was partially trisomic for the distal portion of the long arm of chromosome 13, while the minor cell line was trisomic for all of the long arm of 13. The patient is also unusual because he had congenital glaucoma and was still alive at 10 years.

Ring chromosome 15 syndrome.

Two new cases of ring chromosome 15 are reported. A review of the nine cases described in the literature shows that ring chromosomes 15 are associated with a rather uniform phenotype characterized by slight to moderate mental retardation, marked pre- and postnatal growth failure, triangular face, and short hands and feet.
