Editors' note: From its first issue in 1900 through to the present day, AJN has unparalleled archives detailing nurses' work and lives over more than a century. These articles not only chronicle nursing's growth as a profession within the context of the events of the day, but they also reveal prevailing societal attitudes about women, health care, and human rights. Today's nursing school curricula rarely include nursing's history, but it's a history worth knowing. To this end, From the AJN Archives highlights articles selected to fit today's topics and times. This month we reprint a brief "Prof

Many patients diagnosed with cancer receive chemotherapy. Oncology nurses are responsible for educating patients prior to the chemotherapy experience. Studies have examined what topics should be covered for such patients and how education should be delivered, but little literature exists regarding how to help nurses organize the data and perform education. This article examines how a community oncology practice developed a checklist to assist oncology nurses in organizing and delivering chemotherapy education to patients. Principles of adult education are reviewed briefly. The principles can a

In order to establish an efficient training program of radiation safety for nurses, studies have been carried out on the basis of questionnaires. Collaboration of nurses, who are usually standing closest to the patient, is necessary in order to offer safe radiological diagnostics/treatment. The authors distributed the questionnaire to 134 nurses in five polyclinic hospitals in Japan. Important questions were: fear of radiation exposure, knowledge on the radiation treatment, understanding the impact on pregnancy, and so on. Most of the nurses feel themselves uneasy against exposure to radiation

The emerging new multidisciplinary and crosscultural field of bioethics will require sensitive, open-minded professionals to take the lead in hospital ethics, in genetic counselling, and in the teaching of bioethics to students in nursing, medicine and the basic sciences. Nurses with ward experience who return to university to gain an MA or PhD in bioethics are eminently suited for this leadership role, for they may be more likely than physicians to study for a liberal education to supplement their professional knowledge; their first-hand experience in nursing is an antidote to the pointless s

BACKGROUND: Rural areas face a persistent shortage of Bachelor of Science in Nursing-prepared nurses, impacting health care access and equity.
PURPOSE: This article examines barriers to rural clinical placements for undergraduate nursing students and introduces a faculty-led immersion model as a sustainable solution.
METHODS: The article integrates existing literature, professional experience, and illustrative examples to identify student, faculty, and institutional barriers. It highlights the new Rural Immersion Capstone Model (RICM), developed at a Texas public university, to support rural

UNLABELLED: . Simulation in nursing education in Italy: a scoping review.
INTRODUCTION: Simulation represents a cornerstone in contemporary nursing education, yet no comprehensive synthesis is currently available describing how it is used, in which settings it is applied, and outcomes assessed in Italy.
OBJECTIVE: To map the available literature on simulation in Italian nursing education and practice, examining study designs, participant characteristics, simulation modalities, theoretical and evidence-based underpinnings, outcome measures, and key educational insights.
METHODS: The scoping

In the United States context, incivility in nursing education is widely studied as a behavioral problem to be measured and remedied. In contrast, civility has been conceptualized as a professional virtue that is foundational to nursing identity. Together, these civility and incivility orientations sustain a moral binary for nursing education in which civility functions as virtue and incivility as its violation. This paper re-orients the discourse by reading incivility through camp. Drawing on Susan Sontag and Fabio Cleto, camp serves as an analytic lens to show how exaggerated seriousness, aff

BACKGROUND: There is a great deal of consensus about the need for sexuality education in nursing education programs, however the current state of sexuality education in the United States in terms of the content and amount of time dedicated to sexuality content has not been examined since 1976.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to describe the amount and focus of sexuality content currently taught and to identify the barriers to the inclusion of sexuality education in baccalaureate nursing programs in the United States.
DESIGN: This is an exploratory, descriptive study.

Incorporating high-fidelity simulations into an undergraduate nursing program's perioperative elective course capitalizes on students' active learning. Simulations allow students the opportunity to assess and participate in clinical scenarios, apply standards, and demonstrate correct nursing actions without compromising patient safety. Incorporating a high-risk, low-volume malignant hyperthermia simulation experience into the undergraduate nursing curriculum emphasizes active learning and provides an opportunity for students to experience an uncommon emergency perioperative event. A high-fidel

BACKGROUND: Developing critical thinking is important in nursing as it supports basic cognitive processes; however, students may have difficulty developing these skills due to high academic and clinical stress. Social intelligence and stress management are seen as critical for clinical success and quality of care.
AIM: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a structured critical thinking education course on nursing students' critical thinking dispositions, social intelligence levels, and nursing education-related stress.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest cont

BACKGROUND: The transition to competency-based nursing education under the 2021 AACN Essentials has increased the need for evidence of competency development beyond course grades. This nursing program implemented a program-wide ePortfolio using Google Sites to document learning, support reflection, and demonstrate attainment of competencies.
METHOD: Faculty revised program outcomes to align with the AACN Essentials and other standards, then mapped where competencies were introduced, reinforced, and demonstrated. These maps informed a common ePortfolio template, selection of key course-embedde

BACKGROUND: Forensic nursing bridges the health care and legal systems by delivering person-centered, trauma-informed care to survivors of violence while collecting samples that may be used as evidence. Maintaining competence requires ongoing evaluation of clinical and communication skills, especially for those in underserved regions, who face barriers such as isolation, limited resources, and education gaps.
METHOD: A forensic mobile simulation unit was developed to deliver onsite experiential education. Three simulation training sessions were conducted across rural regions, with 2- to 3-day

Nursing education has documented a punitive culture for 4 decades without stopping its reproduction. This critical theoretical synthesis explains why and proposes a pedagogy of interruption. Inherited professional assumptions reproduce when they are experienced as clinical judgment rather than history. Psychological safety preserves reflexive capacity; interruption renders taken-for-granted practice strange; collective praxis changes what the next learner observes and inherits. Appraisal is the hinge that determines whether destabilization opens reflection or forecloses it. The framework disti

OBJECTIVES: Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) have been used in undergraduate and graduate medical education and in other health professions for a long time. They are regarded as a suitable way for bridging the gap between competency-based education and actual work tasks in the workplace. In nursing education, EPA development started later, and it is unclear which EPAs have been developed and implemented yet. This scoping review aims to identify which EPAs have been developed in nursing education, which of these have even been implemented and what the empirical evidence supports any e

BACKGROUND: Nursing students' incivility experiences not only cause stress and burnout but also have other negative effects on general clinical training, hindering their learning or even affecting their career decisions.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to comprehensively and thoroughly examine the specific phenomena and implications of incivility experienced by nursing students during clinical practicum.
DESIGN: Based on the hermeneutical philosophy, this study utilizes an exploratory and qualitative design to describe the incivility experiences among nursing students undertaking clinical pract

Nurses deliver most of Israel's healthcare services, yet its nurse per population ratio is only 5.9 per 1000, one of the lowest in the developed world. For several years, the managers of the profession have been pushing to upgrade nursing and to move it into the academic sphere. The semiskilled qualification of the practical nurse has been eliminated and training programs for registered nurses are being transformed from diploma training to academic degree programs. A midwifery license is accessible only to registered nurses who take a further 1 year of advanced training and sit the State Midwi
