Association between women empowerment and contraceptive utilization in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Women's empowerment is essential for achieving sustainable development goals. It involves enabling women to take control of their lives by giving them the agency, resources, and opportunities they need to make their own choices and reach their full potential. If more women are empowered to use modern contraceptives, greater reductions in maternal mortality will follow. By understanding this association, we can identify key women empowerment dimensions that have an association with family planning utilization and consider ways forward to improve reproductive health outcomes for wome

Evaluation of the Team Empowerment Theory Using Fawcett's Criteria.

Team Empowerment Theory, developed by Christina Sieloff, is a middle-range nursing theory that emphasizes power as a positive resource for enhancing team effectiveness. This article evaluates the theory using Fawcett's six criteria: significance, internal consistency, parsimony, testability, empirical adequacy, and pragmatic adequacy. The theory aligns with the nursing metaparadigm, demonstrates conceptual clarity, and is supported by a standardized measurement instrument and empirical studies linking empowerment to organizational and patient outcomes. The conceptualization of certain elements

Perceptions of social support, empowerment and youth risk behaviors.

This study examined the association of perceived social support and community empowerment among urban middle-school students living in Matamoros, Mexico and the risk behaviors of fighting, alcohol and tobacco use, and sexual activity. Middle school students (n = 1,181) from 32 public and private Mexican schools were surveyed. Weighted multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted. Among girls, lack of parent/teacher interactions regarding school increased odds for fighting, alcohol and tobacco use. Among boys, lack of empowerment increased odds of alcohol and tobacco use and lack of par

Violence and Economic Empowerment of Women in Pakistan: An Empirical Investigation.

This article empirically investigates whether women's access to economic resources acts as a risk factor or protective factor for spousal (emotional and physical) violence against them, particularly in the case of Pakistan. Using data from Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS) 2012 to 2013, we employed logistic regression to investigate this relationship between women's access to economic resources and spousal violence against them by using two indicators: (a) whether she earns money in cash and/or in-kind and (b) whether she owns property. The results indicate that women who earn in c

Application of an empowerment model to improve civility in nursing education.

Incivility within nursing education presents clear challenges to both students and faculty. The consequences of incivility extend beyond the educational process and into practice, thereby creating an urgent need for a framework that can guide faculty in the efforts to improve and maintain civility in nursing education. This article reviews the complex problem of incivility in nursing education and utilizes evidence in the application of an empowerment model (Worrell et al., 1996) as a framework to set the standard of civility and one that will guide intervention in the unfortunate event that i

Empowerment for adults with chronic mental health problems and obesity.

Obesity is a major health risk and a common problem among people with mental health problems. This article examines the role of empowerment within a health promotion framework for overweight and obese adults with chronic mental health problems. Behaviour change, while a valid strategy for health promotion, might not achieve the desired health gain. On the other hand, an empowered individual or community is able to bring about positive and permanent change by mobilising the necessary resources to achieve health.

Development and Validation of a Multidimensional Nursing Empowerment Scale (NES).

BACKGROUND: Empowerment in nurses is a multidimensional construct that has favorable results for both the patient and the employee and is emphasized in order to provide high-quality healthcare. For this concept to be translated into practice, measurement tools developed in this field are of critical importance. Although several validated instruments assess structural, psychological, or behavioral empowerment separately, each having been validated independently, using distinct samples, scoring frameworks, and item structures, no instrument evaluating all three dimensions simultaneously within a

A Scoping Review of the Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM).

The link between interpersonal trauma and negative biopsychosocial outcomes has been well-documented. Integrated treatments that address trauma, mental health, and substance use among women with trauma histories have been found to be more effective than treatments that focus separately on these concerns. Since the early 2000s, the Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM) has been described as a "promising" integrated trauma group therapy for women. Despite widespread recognition and implementation of TREM, its effectiveness has not been clearly established. The present scoping review is th

Predictors of Empowerment in Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic, progressive disease that has reached pandemic proportions. In Turkey, the frequency of diabetes in individuals aged 20 years or older has been reported to be 13.7% compared with the worldwide prevalence of 8.5%. Empowerment has been correlated with improvement in diabetic self-management capabilities and glycemic control. The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of "empowerment" in individuals with type 2 diabetes from Turkey. METHOD: This was a secondary analysis with a cross-sectional correlation design using stepwise linear regression

Promoting patients' empowerment in rheumatic diseases: the perspective of the International Society of Behçet's Disease Working Group on Patient Empowerment, Adherence to Therapy and Patients' Education.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a rare multisystemic vasculitis that significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Effective management of BD requires a patient-centred approach that empowers individuals to actively participate in their care. This work explores the importance of patient empowerment, adherence to treatment, and patient education in BD. The impact of BD on quality of life (QOL) is significant, affecting both physical and psychological well-being. QOL measures are essential in capturing the full burden of the disease from the patient's perspective, helping guide interventions that ca

Linking Women's Empowerment to Mental Health Symptoms: Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders represent a growing global challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where women are disproportionately affected by social and structural inequalities. Although women's empowerment has been increasingly recognized as a strategy to improve physical health, its relationship with mental health remains less well understood. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between women's empowerment and mental health symptoms among ever-married women in Bangladesh. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the 2022 Bang

Why Prevention Needs More Than Individual Empowerment: Reclaiming Environmental Prevention.

Contemporary prevention discourse increasingly defines its mission as "empowering individuals" - building resilience, skills and assertiveness so that people can resist substance use, bullying, abuse, gambling, violence and gender-based harms. Such individual-level (i-frame) interventions can be effective, and several rest on a solid evidence base. Drawing on Chater and Loewenstein's i-frame/s-frame distinction and on classical public-health scholarship from Rose, McKinlay, Marmot and Marteau, this paper argues that the field has drifted into a near-monopoly of the i-frame and sidelined the en

Conceptualizing pathways linking women's empowerment and prematurity in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Globally, prematurity is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5. Many efforts have focused on clinical approaches to improve the survival of premature babies. There is a need, however, to explore psychosocial, sociocultural, economic, and other factors as potential mechanisms to reduce the burden of prematurity. Women's empowerment may be a catalyst for moving the needle in this direction. The goal of this paper is to examine links between women's empowerment and prematurity in developing settings. We propose a conceptual model that shows pathways by which women'
