Delinquency in male adolescents: the role of alexithymia and family structure.

The purpose of this study was to examine the linkages between alexithymia and delinquency in male adolescents (age ranging from 14 to 18 years), and to investigate whether alexithymia was a good discriminatory factor for juvenile delinquency. Thirty-six offender adolescents and 46 non-offender control adolescents participated in the study and completed the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) (alexithymia), the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (R-CMAS) (anxiety), the Liste d'Adjectifs Bipolaires et en Echelles de Likert (LABEL) (personality-Big Five) and demographic data. The effects of child health on marital status and family structure.

The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence on the effect of child health on marital stability and family structure in an economic framework. We use the 1988 National Health Interview Survey's Child Health Supplement, with a sample of about 9,000 families, to test whether having an unhealthy child decreases the mother's chance of being married and whether it increases her chance of living in an extended family. Using two different measures of child health, we find that having an unhealthy child decreases the mother's likelihood of being married. Our results imply that children in poor hea

Family structure and changes in living arrangements among elderly nonmarried parents.

We used Longitudinal Study of Aging data to investigate change between 1984 and 1986 in living arrangements of older nonmarried parents, focusing on transitions from living alone and living with children to living alone, with children, with others, and institutionalization. Predictors reflect opportunities for coresidence (number and gender of children), resources, needs, and (indirect measures of) attitudes. We find that those with more children are more likely to change from living alone to living with a child. However, number of children does not affect the odds of moving from living with a

A Looplike Secondary Structure Uncovered in a Family of Peptoid Hexamers.

Peptoids, or N-substituted glycine oligomers, are a unique class of biomimetic foldamers. Peptoid oligomers are indeed capable of adopting well-defined ordered structures despite their intrinsic flexibility, which is primarily attributable to the cis/trans isomerism of the main chain tertiary amide bonds. Controlling the geometry of the amides can lead to a diversity of diastereomeric structures. Here, we report for the first time that peptoid hexamers can adopt a unique looplike structure with a cis-cis-trans-cis-cis arrangement of the backbone amides. We found that a neutral zwitterionic sta

Structure of the CD33 Receptor and Implications for the Siglec Family.

In the innate immune system, the CD33 receptor modulates microglial activity. Its downregulation promises to slow Alzheimer's disease, and it is already targeted in blood cancers. The mechanism underlying CD33 signaling is unresolved. Starting from the available crystal structure of its extracellular IgV-IgC1 domains, we have assembled a model of the human CD33 receptor by characterizing the oligomerization and structure of IgC1, transmembrane, and cytosolic domains in solution. IgC1 homodimerizes via intermolecular β-strand pairing and packing. In contrast, the 21-residue transmembrane helix

Working toward reunification as a case goal: does family structure matter?

Despite an increase in single father-headed households, few studies have examined how single fathers fare in child welfare. This study examined the relationship between family structure and reunification as a case goal, and the moderating role of child race/ethnicity. Data came from the 2019 Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System, a national database of all children in foster care in the United States during any point in the fiscal year. The analytic sample included 234,075 children who entered foster care in FY 2019. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine wheth

Family Structure Associated with Measles-Rubella and Varicella Vaccination in Children.

BACKGROUND: Delayed vaccination is a well-studied and critical public health issue. However, limited studies have explored whether familial factors influence vaccination delay. This study aimed to determine whether family structure and comorbidities affect the refusal or delayed receipt of measles-rubella and varicella vaccines. METHODS: We gathered data on all children from birth to 13 months of age between 2006 and 2020 using vaccination records linked with the administrative healthcare claims data from a Japanese city. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine th

Regional Differences in Individualism in Japan: Scoring Based on Family Structure.

The present article reported regional (prefecture-level) differences in individualism in Japan based on family structure in 2005, 2010 and 2015. Previous research calculated 2005 prefecture-level scores of individualism-collectivism in Japan by analyzing five validated indicators of individualism-collectivism (divorce rate, percentage of people living alone, percentage of elderly people aged over 65 living alone, percentage of nuclear family households, and percentage of three-generation households). However, only the scores for 2005 had been presented. The scores and their regional difference

Family income, parental education and brain structure in children and adolescents.

Socioeconomic disparities are associated with differences in cognitive development. The extent to which this translates to disparities in brain structure is unclear. We investigated relationships between socioeconomic factors and brain morphometry, independently of genetic ancestry, among a cohort of 1,099 typically developing individuals between 3 and 20 years of age. Income was logarithmically associated with brain surface area. Among children from lower income families, small differences in income were associated with relatively large differences in surface area, whereas, among children fro

Unique dimeric structure of the DUF2891 family protein CJ0554 from Campylobacter jejuni.

Campylobacter jejuni is a pathogenic bacterium that causes enteritis and Guillain-Barre syndrome in humans. To identify a protein target for the development of a new therapeutic against C. jejuni infection, each gene product of C. jejuni must be functionally characterized. The cj0554 gene of C. jejuni encodes a DUF2891 family protein with unknown functions. To provide functional insights into CJ0554, we determined and analyzed the crystal structure of the CJ0554 protein. CJ0554 adopts an (α/α)6-barrel structure, which consists of an inner α6 ring and an outer α6 ring. CJ0554 assembles into a d

Structure-Function Relationship of the Disintegrin Family: Sequence Signature and Integrin Interaction.

Disintegrins are small cysteine-rich proteins found in a variety of snake venom. These proteins selectively modulate integrin function, heterodimeric receptors involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interaction that are widely studied as therapeutic targets. Snake venom disintegrins emerged from the snake venom metalloproteinase and are classified according to the sequence size and number of disulfide bonds. Evolutive structure and function diversification of disintegrin family involves a stepwise decrease in the polypeptide chain, loss of cysteine residues, and selectivity. Since the structure

The SLC16 gene family - structure, role and regulation in health and disease.

The SLC16 gene family has fourteen members. Four (SLC16A1, SLC16A3, SLC16A7, and SLC16A8) encode monocarboxylate transporters (MCT1, MCT4, MCT2, and MCT3, respectively) catalysing the proton-linked transport of monocarboxylates such as l-lactate, pyruvate and ketone bodies across the plasma membrane. SLC16A2 encodes a high affinity thyroid hormone transporter (MCT8) and SLC16A10 an aromatic amino acid transporter (TAT1). The substrates and roles of the remaining eight members are unknown. All family members are predicted to have 12 transmembrane helices (TMs) with intracellular C- and N-termin

The GFI1 Gene Family: Evolution, Structure, and Its Role in Immune Responses.

The immune system's evolution is crucial for its role in fighting pathogens and involvement in autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases. The GFI1 gene family plays a role in the regulation of the function of immune cells, including neutrophils and CD4 + T cells. GFI1 consists of two members, GFI1A and GFI1B. GFI1A is vital for myeloid and lymphoid differentiation, while GFI1B is crucial for generating red blood cells and platelets. Both genes share a repressor SNAG domain and C2H2 zinc finger domains. However, the full relationship between their structure and function remains unclear. We aime

Influences of the IL-6 cytokine family on bone structure and function.

The IL-6 family of cytokines comprises a large group of cytokines that all act via the formation of a signaling complex that includes the glycoprotein 130 (gp130) receptor. Despite this, many of these cytokines have unique roles that regulate the activity of bone forming osteoblasts, bone resorbing osteoclasts, bone-resident osteocytes, and cartilage cells (chondrocytes). These include specific functions in craniofacial development, longitudinal bone growth, and the maintenance of trabecular and cortical bone structure, and have been implicated in musculoskeletal pathologies such as craniosyno

Biosynthesis and structure-activity relationships of the lipid a family of glycolipids.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a glycolipid found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, is a potent elicitor of innate immune responses in mammals. A typical LPS molecule is composed of three different structural domains: a polysaccharide called the O-antigen, a core oligosaccharide, and Lipid A. Lipid A is the amphipathic glycolipid moiety of LPS. It stimulates the immune system by tightly binding to Toll-like receptor 4. More recently, Lipid A has also been shown to activate intracellular caspase-4 and caspase-5. An impressive diversity is observed in Lipid A structures from different

Structure and function of the ARH family of ADP-ribosyl-acceptor hydrolases.

ADP-ribosylation is a post-translational protein modification, in which ADP-ribose is transferred from nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)) to specific acceptors, thereby altering their activities. The ADP-ribose transfer reactions are divided into mono- and poly-(ADP-ribosyl)ation. Cellular ADP-ribosylation levels are tightly regulated by enzymes that transfer ADP-ribose to acceptor proteins (e.g., ADP-ribosyltransferases, poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARP)) and those that cleave the linkage between ADP-ribose and acceptor (e.g., ADP-ribosyl-acceptor hydrolases (ARH), poly-(ADP-ribose
