Feasibility and Effectiveness Studies with Oral Vaccination of Free-Roaming Dogs against Rabies in Thailand.

(1) Background: Thailand has made significant progress in reducing the number of human and animal rabies cases. However, control and elimination of the last remaining pockets of dog-mediated rabies have shown to be burdensome, predominantly as a result of the large numbers of free-roaming dogs without an owner that cannot be restrained without special efforts and therefore remain unvaccinated. To reach these dogs, the feasibility, and benefits of oral rabies vaccination (ORV) as a complementary tool has been examined under field conditions. (2) Methods: ORV of dogs was tested in five study are

Feasibility of pulse oxymetry to measure arterial O2 saturation in studies on cochlear blood circulation.

To understand the characteristics of oxygen transport to the inner ear, the relationship between arterial O2 saturation and cochlear microcirculation was investigated under different respiratory condition in guinea pigs. To monitor arterial O2 saturation a pulse oxymeter instead of an arterial blood gas analyzer was used. When the arterial O2 saturation was measured in the foot pad by a pulse oxymeter under different respiratory conditions, the data showed a close correlation with the results of blood gas analysis. For the measurement of cochlear microcirculation, a pulse oxymeter was found to

Cognitive-behavioural intervention for depression after stroke: five single case studies on effects and feasibility.

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether or not a cognitive-behavioural intervention for depression after stroke has an effect and is feasible. A single-subject quasi experimental design (SSED) was used with an AB design and follow-up. The participants were five first episode stroke patients attending outpatient rehabilitation in a rehabilitation centre in The Netherlands. Mood and quality of life were measured on four occasions over four weeks (baseline phase A). During the eight week intervention phase (B) a visual analogue measure of mood was administered three times a week. Imme

Impact of localization studies on feasibility of minimally invasive parathyroidectomy in an endemic goiter region.

BACKGROUND: A localized single-gland disease is the basis for minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). (99m)Tc sestamibi scanning (MIBI) and high-resolution Doppler ultrasonography (US) are well-established techniques used to localize enlarged parathyroid glands. Additionally, US enables physicians to diagnose subclinical thyroid abnormalities. The aim of this study was to optimize localization results, applying a combined interpretation of MIBI and US, and to analyze the influence of these results on the feasibility of MIP (endoscopic/video-assisted an

"sCT-Feasibility" - a feasibility study for deep learning-based MRI-only brain radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) is an important treatment modality for patients with brain malignancies. Traditionally, computed tomography (CT) images are used for RT treatment planning whereas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images are used for tumor delineation. Therefore, MRI and CT need to be registered, which is an error prone process. The purpose of this clinical study is to investigate the clinical feasibility of a deep learning-based MRI-only workflow for brain radiotherapy, that eliminates the registration uncertainty through calculation of a synthetic CT (sCT) from MRI data. Investigating the effectiveness and feasibility of exercise on microvascular reactivity and quality of life in systemic sclerosis patients: study protocol for a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Raynaud's phenomenon is one of the first clinical manifestations observed in systemic sclerosis (SSc). This microvasculature disorder affects mostly the digits in over 95% of SSc patients, significantly affecting their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and incurring higher hospital admissions and other healthcare costs. Exercise is known to improve both micro- and macrovascular function - aerobic exercise and resistance training, separately or combined, have been demonstrated to lead to significant vasculo-physiological improvements in conditions that present vasculopathy. Feasibility of conducting brand-specific influenza vaccine effectiveness studies in three Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Sweden.

Annual reformulation and approval of seasonal influenza vaccines necessitate yearly evaluation of their effectiveness. Regulatory agencies, including the European Medicines Agency (EMA), rely on timely, real-world evidence to inform product-specific benefit-risk assessments. We explored the feasibility of conducting annual, brand-specific influenza vaccine effectiveness studies in Denmark, Finland and Sweden, starting with the 2024/25 season. These countries maintain population-wide vaccination, clinical and laboratory registers, linkable via personal identification numbers and updated in near

Feasibility of Observing Cerebrovascular Disease Phenotypes with Smartphone Monitoring: Study Design Considerations for Real-World Studies.

Accelerated by the adoption of remote monitoring during the COVID-19 pandemic, interest in using digitally captured behavioral data to predict patient outcomes has grown; however, it is unclear how feasible digital phenotyping studies may be in patients with recent ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack. In this perspective, we present participant feedback and relevant smartphone data metrics suggesting that digital phenotyping of post-stroke depression is feasible. Additionally, we proffer thoughtful considerations for designing feasible real-world study protocols tracking cerebrovascul

Feasibility study of a surface-coated lung model to quantify active agent deposition for preclinical studies.

BACKGROUND: Multiple drug resistance of a growing number of bacterial pathogens represents an increasing challenge in conventional curative treatments of infectious diseases. However, the development and testing of new antibiotics is associated with a high number of animal experiments. METHODS: A symmetrical parametrized lung test rig allowing the exposure of air-passage surfaces to antibiotics was designed and tested to demonstrate proof-of-principle with aerosols containing allicin, which is an antimicrobial natural product from garlic. An artificial lung surface is coated with bacteria emb

Feasibility evaluation of a Zn-Cu alloy for intrauterine devices: In vitro and in vivo studies.

The comprehensively adopted copper-containing intrauterine devices (Cu-IUDs) present typical adverse effects such as bleeding and pain at the initial stage of post-implantation. The replacement of Cu material is demanded. Zinc and its alloys, the emerging biodegradable materials, exhibited contraceptive effects since 1969. In this work, we evaluated the feasibility of bulk Zn alloys as IUD active material. Using pure Cu and pure Zn as control groups, we investigated the contraceptive performance of Zn-0.5Cu and Zn-1Cu alloys via in vitro and in vivo tests. The results showed that the main corr

Cultural feasibility studies in preparation for clinical trials to reduce maternal-infant HIV transmission in Haiti.

A cultural feasibility study is defined as one that investigates scientific as well as ethical, behavioral, and social issues in the design of clinical trials. The value of such a broadly defined assessment is illustrated through the presentation of two case studies conducted to prepare for clinical trials to reduce maternal-infant HIV transmission on Cité Soleil, Haiti. The first study addressed issues surrounding a trial of breast-feeding and exclusive bottle-feeding among HIV seropositive mothers. The second study focused on the implementation of a double-blind trial of HIV immune globulin

In vivo feasibility study of humanoid robots in surgery.

Recent advances in actuation, control and learning have rapidly pushed humanoid robots from a distant vision towards near-term real-world deployment1-18. Healthcare is a particularly pressing domain, in which staffing shortages and increasing care demand are widening the gap between clinical workload and available skilled labour19-21. Although current automation has largely focused on digital and logistical tasks22, much hospital work remains embodied, requiring mobility, manipulation and safe interaction in human-designed environments. Humanoid form factors offer unique potential, particularl

An Indian adapted Mediterranean diet: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in Indians. The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is cardioprotective, in part, because of its anti-inflammatory properties. We tested the feasibility of implementing an Indian Adapted Mediterranean Diet (IAMD) based on North Indian cuisine. METHODS: The IAMD is based on common Indian foods similar to their MD counterparts. Culturally suitable substitutes of specific Mediterranean foods were identified to develop typical North Indian recipes for IAMD. A 7-day calorie-specific cyclic diet plan using these recipes was prescribed to 5
