Cost of tuberculosis treatment in low- and middle-income countries: systematic review and meta-regression.

BACKGROUND: Despite a scarcity of tuberculosis (TB) cost data, a substantial body of evidence has been accumulating for drug-susceptible TB (DS-TB) treatment. In this study, we review unit costs for DS-TB treatment from a provider´s perspective. We also examine factors driving cost variations and extrapolate unit costs across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).METHODS: We searched published and grey literature for any empirically collected TB cost estimates. We selected a subgroup of estimates looking at DS-TB treatment. We extracted information on activities and inputs included. We stan

Heat, Human Performance, and Occupational Health: A Key Issue for the Assessment of Global Climate Change Impacts.

Ambient heat exposure is a well-known health hazard, which reduces human performance and work capacity at heat levels already common in tropical and subtropical areas. Various health problems have been reported. Increasing heat exposure during the hottest seasons of each year is a key feature of global climate change. Heat exhaustion and reduced human performance are often overlooked in climate change health impact analysis. Later this century, many among the four billion people who live in hot areas worldwide will experience significantly reduced work capacity owing to climate change. In some

Global Health Security Index and COVID-19 pandemic mortality 2020-2021: a comparative study of islands and non-islands across 194 jurisdictions.

OBJECTIVES: Past studies show a mixed relationship between the Global Health Security (GHS) Index and COVID-19 pandemic health outcomes. Some recent work that suggested higher GHS Index scores are associated with better mortality outcomes has been criticised on methodological grounds. There remains scope for improved analyses of these relationships, including of island nations and macroeconomic pandemic outcomes. We aimed to determine the relationship between GHS Index scores and COVID-19 pandemic excess mortality 2020-2021 and macroeconomic pandemic outcomes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, multiva

Economic effects of livestock disease burden in Ethiopia: A computable general equilibrium analysis.

The burden of animal disease is widespread globally and is especially severe for developing countries dependent on livestock production. Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in Africa and the second-largest human population on the continent. Ethiopia is one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa; however, much of the population still lives in extreme poverty, and most households depend on agriculture. Animal disease negatively affects domestic livestock production and limits growth potential across the domestic agricultural supply chain. This research investigates the economic eff

A multifaceted ecological approach to explore links between environmental factors and the epidemiology of disorders of gut-brain interaction.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are characterized by debilitating symptoms not explained by structural or biochemical abnormalities. While functional conditions present with complex, likely heterogeneous pathophysiology, we aimed to investigate if proxy measures of sociocultural and environmental factors are associated with the prevalence of various DGBI in populations across the world. METHODS: We performed an ecological study utilizing peer-reviewed published datasets reporting for 26 countries prevalence rates of DGBI (Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study, RFGES)

The effects of selected neglected tropical diseases on economic performance at the macrolevel in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as leprosy, lymphatic filariasis (LF), schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis are endemic in several African countries. These diseases can lead to severe pain and permanent disability, which can negatively affect the economic productivity of the affected person(s), and hence resulting into low economic performance at the macrolevel. Nonetheless, empirical evidence of the effects of these NTDs on economic performance at the macrolevel is sparse. This study therefore investigates the effects of the above-mentioned NTDs on economic performance at th

Can economic indicators predict infectious disease spread? A cross-country panel analysis of 13 European countries.

Aims: It is unclear how economic factors impact on the epidemiology of infectious disease. We evaluated the relationship between incidence of selected infectious diseases and economic factors, including economic downturn, in 13 European countries between 1970 and 2010. Methods: Data were obtained from national communicable disease surveillance centres. Negative binomial forms of the generalised additive model (GAM) and the generalised linear model were tested to see which best reflected transmission dynamics of: diphtheria, pertussis, measles, meningococcal disease, hepatitis B, gonorrhoea, sy

The correlation between economic development and suicide rate - based on the global WHO and WB database.

BACKGROUND: Although some studies have reported correlations between economic factors and suicide rates, there is a lack of systematic analysis from a global data perspective. METHODS: The most recent suicide rates (from 2017 to 2019) were obtained from the World Health Organization (WHO). The economic variables were obtained from the World Bank (WB) website. Software was used to match the suicide rates and the related variables from the database, country by country. Statistical methods were used to analyze the correlations between them. RESULTS: Economic indicators, such as national income

Ageing affecting the Americas?: exploring the growth direction: the relationship between the elderly population and economic growth in the American context.

The main aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the elderly population and economic growth in 25 North and South American countries use annual secondary data from 1961 to 2021. Instead of focusing on the conditional mean, this study tests for Granger causality in the entire conditional distribution of the elderly population and economic growth through wavelet coherence analysis. The study findings indicated a unidirectional Granger causality running from per capita gross domestic product (GDP) to the elderly population for Bolivia, Colombia, Guyana, Peru and Puerto Rico and a

Does Environmental Innovation Improve Environmental Productivity?-An Empirical Study Based on the Spatial Panel Data Model of Chinese Urban Agglomerations.

Environmental productivity comprehensively measures economic growth and environmental quality. Environmental innovation is considered to be the key to solving economic and environmental problems. Therefore, discussing the impact of environmental innovation on environmental productivity will reveal its economic and environmental effects. This paper measures environmental productivity by value added per unit of pollution emissions (four types of emissions are used) using panel data of 10 Chinese urban agglomerations from 2003 to 2016 to analyze the spatial correlation of environmental productivi

Financial footsteps and carbon footprints: Analyzing the relationship between financial development and carbon inequality in China.

Achieving fair climate action requires addressing carbon disparity, but little is known about its causes, especially the role played by financial systems. According to this study, financial development could be a crucial tool for reducing this inequality. This study examines the effect of financial development on carbon inequality by considering CO2 emissions, foreign direct investment, gross domestic product, and trade openness as additional determinants in carbon inequality function by utilizing time-sequential data of China for the period 1980 to 2022. We employed the Bootstrap Auto Regress

The role of alcohol control policy on the level of alcohol consumption in member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations 2000-2022: identifying trends and country clusters for further analyses.

BACKGROUND: In his historical studies of current high-income countries, Angus Deaton demonstrated a correlation between a country's prosperity and the health of its population. His conceptual framework has recently been expanded to include the role of alcohol. In this ecological study, we test the key assumptions of the expanded framework and classify countries with respect to both their levels of alcohol consumption and alcohol control policies to economic development. METHODS: We explored linear trends from 2000 to 2022 in gross domestic product per capita at purchasing power parity (GDP-PP

Does foreign direct investment affect environmental degradation: Evidence from largest carbon intense countries.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and environmental degradation are some of the most controversial debates, especially in the context of global warming and climate change. This study aims to shed light on the impact of FDI on environmental degradation in the countries with the highest carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, taking into account 513 country-years between the years 1996 and 2022. CO2 and the ecological footprint were used as indicators of environmental degradation. The possible non-linear linkage between FDI and environmental degradation has also been analyzed. Gross domestic product (GDP)

Moving Beyond GDP: Cost Effectiveness of Cochlear Implantation and Deaf Education in Latin America.

HYPOTHESIS: Cochlear implantation (CI) and deaf education are cost effective management strategies of childhood profound sensorineural hearing loss in Latin America. BACKGROUND: CI has been widely established as cost effective in North America and Europe and is considered standard of care in those regions, yet cost effectiveness in other economic environments has not been explored. With 80% of the global hearing loss burden existing in low- and middle-income countries, developing cost effective management strategies in these settings is essential. This analysis represents the continuation of

Global immunisation planning and economic development potential: a panel data analysis for the macroeconomic impact of hepatitis B vaccination from 2000 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: The Immunisation Agenda 2030, led by the World Health Organisation (WHO), outlines a ten-year strategy to ensure universal access to vaccines worldwide to improve health and well-being. The hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine, included in the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) pentavalent vaccine, has been successfully introduced in many low-income countries since 2000. Despite its recognised cost-effectiveness in enhancing health capital, the economic pathways through which vaccination rate affects development remain underexplored. This study aims to examine the effe
