Can reliable values of Young's modulus be deduced from Fisher's (1971) spinning lens measurements?

The current textbook view of the causes of presbyopia rests very largely on a series of experiments reported by R.F. Fisher some three decades ago, and in particular on the values of lens Young's modulus inferred from the deformation caused by spinning excised lenses about their optical axis (Fisher 1971) We studied the extent to which inferred values of Young's modulus are influenced by assumptions inherent in the mathematical procedures used by Fisher to interpret the test and we investigated several alternative interpretation methods. The results suggest that modelling assumptions inherent

Regional and subcellular distribution of ascorbate free radical reductase activity in the human lens.

This paper reports that the human lens is endowed with a characteristic regional and subcellular distribution of ascorbate free radical (AFR) reductase (EC 1.6.5.4) activity, and it is associated with the soluble fraction of the lens protein. AFR reductase activity in either immature senile cataractous or transparent lens was higher in the cortex, where the level of insoluble protein is lower, than in the nucleus. The high reductase activity and low insoluble protein content of the cortex were comparable between the assayed cataractous and transparent lenses. In the nucleus, in contrast, the r

The state of sulphydryl groups in proteins isolated from normal and cataractous human lenses.

Individual crystallins, urea-soluble and urea-insoluble proteins were isolated from the nucleus and cortex of types I-IV cataractous lenses and normal lenses. The levels of protein sulphydryls (P-SH), disulphides (S-S), as well as surface (F-SH) and buried (S-SH) in these proteins were determined by reaction with 5, 5'-dithiotris- (2-nitrobenzoic acid) or performic acid oxidation followed by amino acid analysis. During nuclear colour development there is a progressive decrease in the sulphydryl content of the crystallins. In the nuclei of advanced cataractous lenses, the P-SH decreases to 10%

Nucleotide levels in human lens: regional distribution in different forms of senile cataract.

Sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography methods were employed to assess regional distribution of adenine, guanosine and uridine nucleotides in clear and cataractous human eye lenses. According to slit-lamp examination, three forms of senile cataract were distinguished: (1) supranuclear or deep cortical cataract (typical senile cataract), (2) primary nuclear cataract (cataracta brunescens) and (3) subcapsular cortical cataract associated either with a supranuclear (3a) or a secondary nuclear cataract (3b). Except for AMP, which was highest in the nuclear fraction, all other nucleotides

Relationship between lens protein glycation and membrane structure in human cataract.

Glycation, which begins with the spontaneous reaction between sugar and proteins by the formation of Schiff bases, is known to especially damage long-lived proteins such as lens crystallins, and has been implicated in the ageing process and particularly in cataract formation. In this study of human senile cataract, a specific method is used to measure the formation of Amadori compounds in control postmortem and cataractous lenses, but no difference was found. However, the fluorescence of proteins at 430 nm (exc 350 nm), which has been attributed to advanced glycation, increased with normal age

Changes in the thickness of the crystalline lens components before and after cycloplegia in children with different refractive errors.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in the thickness of the crystalline lens components in children with different refractive errors before and after cycloplegia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This prospective study recruited 132 right eyes from 132 children (age 5-15 years) with different spherical equivalent (SE) ranging from -6.00 diopters (D) to +6.75 D. We categorized these eyes into non-myopia (N = 30), low-myopia (N = 77), and moderate-myopia (N = 25) groups. The thickness parameters of the crystalline lens components, including lens thickness (LT), lens nucleus thickness (LNT), anterior cortex thi

OCT imaging of capsular block syndrome with crystalline cortical remnants in the capsular bag.

A 72-year-old woman with cataract had phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in the capsular bag with continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis in the right eye. One day postoperatively, cortical remnants were noted between the posterior capsule and the intraocular lens optic located inferiorly. Uncorrected visual acuity was 1.0 and the patient was emmetropic. At a control visit 6 years postoperatively, the patient showed a hyperopic shift compared with the refraction of the first postoperative period with a best-corrected visual acuity of 0.4. A transparent liquefied substance that

[fs-Lentotomy: presbyopia reversal by generating gliding planes inside the crystalline lens].

Based on the Helmholtz theory for accommodation, increasing sclerosis of the lens nucleus and cortex is the main cause for the development of presbyopia. Existing therapies, however, do not reverse the stiffness of the crystalline lens and thus do not regain real accommodation ability. A new approach to restore the flexibility of the lens has been realised by utilising the non-linear interaction of ultrafast laser pulses with transparent tissue, the so-called photodisruption. This process has been used to create micro-incisions which act as gliding planes inside the crystalline lens without op

PURPOSE: To determine the feasibility of using magnetization transfer contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to track cataractous lens changes. METHODS: A fast spin-echo sequence was modified to include a magnetization transfer contrast (MTC) preparation pulse train. This consisted of twenty 8.5-msec sinc pulses, 1200 Hz upfield from the water resonance and 1.2-Hz power. The MTC preparation pulse was followed by acquisition through fast spin-echo imaging. The imaging parameters were number of excitations (NEX) = 1, echo time (TE) = 14 msec, recovery time (TR) = 2 sec, echo train l

Defect of a fiber cell-specific 94-kDa protein in the lens of inherited microphthalmic mutant mouse Elo.

Deficiency in a 94,000-dalton protein in the non-crystallin fraction from the Elo mouse lens was shown. To perform further investigations, we raised an antibody against the 94,000-dalton protein isolated from normal mouse lens. Western blot analysis with the antibody indicated that the protein was only present in the lens and not in the brain, lung, heart, liver, and kidney. In the lens, it was unique to the cortex and nucleus fractions, not being present in the epithelial cells. Furthermore, it was observed in the water-soluble fraction as well as in the urea-soluble fraction. The antibody we

Spectral analysis and comparison of mineral deposits forming in opacified intraocular lens and senile cataractous lens.

This preliminary report was attempted to compare the chemical components of mineral deposits on the surfaces of an opacified intraocular lens (IOL) and a calcified senile cataractous lens (SCL) by vibrational spectral diagnosis. An opacified intraocular lens (IOL) was obtained from a 65-year-old male patient who had a significant decrease in visual acuity 2-years after an ocular IOL implantation. Another SCL with grayish white calcified plaque on the subcapsular cortex was isolated from a 79-year-old male patient with complicated cataract after cataract surgery. Optical light microscope was us

Age-stratified normative lens densitometry in children: zone-specific reference curves from 4-18 years.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Quantitative evaluation of lens transparency may aid the clinical assessment of normal and abnormal lenticular changes during childhood. BACKGROUND: Scheimpflug imaging enables objective measurement of crystalline lens light backscatter. While age-related increases in lens densitometry are well documented in adults, normative paediatric data remain limited. Because lens development in childhood differs fundamentally from adult cataractogenesis, age-stratified reference standards are required. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 188 eyes from 188 participants aged

UV filters in the lens of the thirteen lined ground squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus).

Major UV filters have been identified in the lens of the 13 lined ground squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus). These were found to be N-acetyl-3-hydroxykynurenine and N-acetyl-kynurenine, in addition to a small quantity of 3-hydroxykynurenine. The level of N-acetyl-3-hydroxykynurenine measured in the ground squirrel lens, 8.2mM, is approximately 11 times the concentration of 3-hyroxykynurenine glucoside reported previously for the human lens. Two additional UV filters of related structure were also present; however, their structures are still under investigation. HPLC elution profiles indi

Protein and electrolyte alterations in human senile cataract.

Water content, wet and dry weights of the crystalline lens, and protein, free amino acid and electrolyte levels in serum, aqueous humour and lens were determined in patients with nuclear senile cataract and at the different stages of the maturation of cortical cataract. In immature senile cortical cataract wet weight and sodium contents of the lens were significantly higher while potassium levels were low when compared with the nuclear cataract. With the maturation of cortical cataract water content, wet weight and sodium concentrations of the crystalline lens significantly increased while pro

Effect of suction angle on zonular fibers during residual cortex removal in phacoemulsification using finite element modeling.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of suction direction on zonular fibers' mechanical behavior using finite element modeling. SETTING: Laboratory study. DESIGN: 3D finite element model experimental study. METHODS: A 3D finite element model was developed, including nucleus covered by cortex and capsule. Similar to cataract surgery, a circular rapture was considered at the top of the capsule to apply suction pressure. Finally, zonular fibers were modeled as a continuum body using 3D solid elements (C3D8R). A custom FORTRAN subroutine was implemented to enforce tension-only behavior, mimicking th

Spontaneous resolution of a traumatic cataract caused by an intralenticular foreign body.

A 49-year-old man presented with an intralenticular metal foreign body incurred while he was sawing wood. The metal chard had violated the lens capsule and was lodged in the cortex of the lens. It was removed using a lens-preservation technique during open-globe repair. Subsequently, a dense posterior cortical cataract developed, which spontaneously resolved over the ensuing months. The cataract had a cruciate configuration with wave-like disruption of the stromal lamellae. To our knowledge, this is the first case of spontaneous resolution of a cataract after capsule violation by an intralenti
