Natural disasters and physical health capital loss among school-age children.

An unexpected catastrophic natural disaster that dramatically changes the living environment disrupts educational opportunities for school-aged children, negatively affecting the cognitive and non-cognitive skills and educational achievement necessary for human capital development. However, little attention has been paid to the impact on children's physical health through reduction in physical activity opportunities. Given the positive correlation between academic and athletic performance, the educational returns from disaster-induced negative health shocks may have been underestimated. This s

Double jeopardy: conflict and natural disasters-driven cholera outbreaks in Sudan.

Cholera continues to be a global threat, particularly in regions affected by conflict and environmental shocks, such as Sudan. Such humanitarian crises disrupt sanitation, water, and health systems, exacerbating cholera transmission. Overcrowded camps from displacement, poor hygiene, and weak surveillance further contribute to the outbreaks even beyond national borders. This paper explores armed conflict-driven crises and population movement as epidemiological drivers of cholera. It highlights the critical need for integrated, multisectoral strategies combining vaccination, water, sanitation,

Active support after natural disasters: a review of a microbiologist's role.

In the aftermath of a natural disaster, multispecialty rapid response teams are deployed to support health-related relief work. Microbiologists are often part of such teams, along with public health specialists, clinicians and entomologists, and can contribute to the response in multiple ways. The role of a microbiologist is critical not only for laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases, but also for situational analysis and evaluation, planning, prevention and control. The task begins with risk assessment, specifically for identification of diseases epidemic and endemic to the area. Evalua

Nephrology Care in Man-Made and Natural Disasters: Addressing the Unique Challenges for the Provision of Home Dialysis in Disasters.

Dialysis-dependent patients, especially those on peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, rely heavily on uninterrupted access to electricity, clean water, and supply chains. Disasters, both natural and man-made, disrupt these critical systems, placing patients at significant risk of treatment interruptions, hospitalization, and mortality. Preparing for these challenges is vital to ensure continuity of life-saving care during crises. This review aims to examine the unique challenges faced by dialysis patients during disasters, including logistical barriers, workforce shortages, and infrastru

Prevention of Natural Disaster-Induced Cardiovascular Diseases.

Natural disasters, such as floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall, earthquakes, and tsunamis, can induce stress, which may contribute to the onset and aggravation of various cardiovascular diseases. The circulatory system is most susceptible to the effects of stress, and stress-related cardiovascular diseases, such as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, pulmonary thromboembolism, hypertension, stroke triggered by increased blood pressure, and acute myocardial infarction, can occur during natural disasters. The risk of developing angina pectoris, arrhythmia, sudden cardiac death, and heart failur

The case for regional post-natural disaster preparation.

The private sector is becoming increasingly responsible to society and the environment. To this end, instead of simply contributing aid after a disaster, firms should establish relationships in advance, investing in regional growth through a post-natural disaster preparation pact. The pact should be a regionally focused partnership agreement - a natural disaster equivalent to the Kyoto Protocol. By coordinating preparation mechanisms through investment and collaboration before disasters hit, companies not only show confidence in the economy, encouraging regional cooperation and fostering econo

The nature of psychiatric problems among disaster victims.

One-quarter of the residents (about 52,000) in the disaster area around the volcanic eruption area of Mt Unzen-Fugen have been forced to evacuate over a 3 year period. We conducted a psychological controlled study using the GHQ-30 for evacuees. As a result, the percentage of people with a high score over 8 points was 67% of evacuees, markedly higher than 10% of the control group. Some mental support activities, such as counseling by community nurses and crisis intervention/medication by psychiatrists and others, have been promoted. Subjects who received a psychiatric intervention had good outc

US Emergency Department Use and Operations Amid Natural Disasters: A Narrative Review.

In the United States from 2014-2024, an average of 18.2 national disasters per year caused over a billion dollars in inflation-adjusted damage, compared with 3.3 national disasters per year during the 1980s. The increased frequency and intensity of severe weather phenomena-attributed by climate science experts to climate change-have raised concerns about national emergency preparedness. One aspect of emergency preparedness is the functioning of emergency departments (ED). In this narrative review, we examine patterns of ED use and operations amid natural disasters in the US, with a special foc

Supporting Breastfeeding Women Amid Natural Disasters in the US: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Mothers, particularly those who are breastfeeding, as well as their babies are often overlooked populations during natural disasters. Still, the ever-growing frequency and severity of natural disasters in the United States (US) have increased the likelihood that a breastfeeding family will experience a natural disaster. In 2019, 83% of all newborns received breastmilk, and 84% of Americans lived in an area that recently experienced a natural disaster. This scoping review aimed to identify ways to support breastfeeding women, infants, and young children during a natural disaster. M

Posttraumatic Growth as a Response to Natural Disasters in Children and Adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines factors thought to be associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG) (demographic variables, exposure, and family and social processes) among youth exposed to natural disasters, describes the relationship between PTG and posttraumatic stress, and discusses psychological processes (rumination and coping) linked to PTG. RECENT FINDINGS: Guided by PTG theory and the literature on PTG in adults, research has revealed relationships between PTG and child, environmental, and family and social factors among youth though the results are mixed. Youth's subjective exp

Predictors of Individual-Level Preparedness for Natural Disasters and Trust in Disaster Assistance in the United States, 2024.

OBJECTIVES: Preparation for disasters at an individual level is one of the most fundamental and least expensive methods to prepare for disasters. We investigated predictors for individual-level natural disaster preparedness and trust in disaster assistance among adults aged ≥18 years in the United States. METHODS: To examine individual-level preparedness for natural disasters in the United States, we conducted an online survey grounded in the theory of planned behavior from April 24 through June 3, 2024. We used logistic regression models to analyze relationships between individual-level prep

Notional Spread of Cholera in Haiti Following a Natural Disaster: Considerations for Military and Disaster Relief Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Cholera remains a significant public health threat for many countries, and the severity largely varies by the population and local conditions that drive disease spread, especially in endemic areas prone to natural disasters and flooding. Epidemiological models can provide useful information to military planners for understanding disease spread within populations and the effectiveness of response options for preventing the transmission among deployed and stationed personnel. This study demonstrates the use of epidemiological modeling to understand the dynamics of cholera transmiss

Pre-disaster PTSD as a moderator of the relationship between natural disaster and suicidal ideation over time.

BACKGROUND: Natural disasters are associated with a variety of negative health consequences, including enhanced suicide risk. Factors that moderate the relationship between disaster exposure and enhanced suicide risk are unknown. The aim of the current study was to determine whether pre-disaster PTSD moderates the association between change over time in thoughts of death, suicidal ideation (SI), suicide plans, and suicide attempts (SA) from pre- to post-disaster. METHODS: Participants (n = 2832) were recruited from Chile as part of the larger PREDICT study and completed a measure of lifetime

Meta-analyses of motivational factors of response to natural disaster.

Response behavior of individuals is of critical importance to decrease chances of injury and death as well as ameliorate costs in property and infrastructure damage in natural disasters. Plenty of studies have examined which factors motivate individuals to respond to natural disasters. However, a systematic overview of the key motivating factors of various response behaviors is lacking. This study conducts a series of meta-analyses using data of 53,713 samples from 87 studies (77 papers) conducted in 27 different countries and regions to examine how 17 motivational factors were associated with
