Smear Layer Removal and Dentinal Tubules Penetration of an Ethyl Acetate Fraction of Salvadora persica Combined with Low-concentration Sodium Hypochlorite.

AIMS: To evaluate the smear layer removal ability, dentin mineral alteration, and dentinal tubules penetration of an ethyl acetate fraction (FEA) of Salvadora persica (Miswak) at 5 mg/mL, used alone and in combination with 1.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), compared with saline, 2.5% NaOCl, and EDTA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty human single-rooted premolars extracted for orthodontic purposes were prepared using rotary instrumentation. Specimens were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10): saline (negative control), FEA miswak (5 mg/mL), FEA miswak + 1.25% NaOCl, and EDTA (positive cont

Hybrid AI-assistive diagnostic model permits rapid TBS classification of cervical liquid-based thin-layer cell smears.

Technical advancements significantly improve earlier diagnosis of cervical cancer, but accurate diagnosis is still difficult due to various factors. We develop an artificial intelligence assistive diagnostic solution, AIATBS, to improve cervical liquid-based thin-layer cell smear diagnosis according to clinical TBS criteria. We train AIATBS with >81,000 retrospective samples. It integrates YOLOv3 for target detection, Xception and Patch-based models to boost target classification, and U-net for nucleus segmentation. We integrate XGBoost and a logical decision tree with these models to optimize

Photodynamic Therapy, Ozonated Water, and Diode Laser Efficacy in Removing Smear Layer in Carious Dentin and Their Effect on Bond Integrity to Composite Resin.

Aim: To investigate the efficacy of diode laser (DL), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and ozone water on the removal of smear layer (SL) and its assessment via scanning electron microscope (SEM) following its effect on shear bond strength (SBS) on carious affected dentin. Materials and Methods: Sixty-six caries-affected dentin (CAD) samples were obtained from the dental outpatient department. The occlusal enamel and infected dentin of the included samples were meticulously excised using a water-cooled, slow-speed device, resulting in a flat mid-coronal CAD surface. Based on the effectiveness of SL

Comparative evaluation of effect of nisin-incorporated ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and MTAD on endodontic biofilm eradication, smear layer removal, and depth of sealer penetration.

OBJECTIVES: To comparatively evaluate the nisin-incorporated ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (N-EDTA) and MTAD on cytotoxicity, endodontic biofilm eradication potential, smear layer removal ability, and sealer penetration depth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: N-EDTA was prepared and characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Minimum inhibitory, minimum bactericidal, and minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBC, MIC, and MBIC) were determined on Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) strain. The cytocompatibility of N-EDTA and MTAD was evaluated using 3,(4,5-dimethylthiazol-

Comparative in vitro evaluation of sonic, passive ultrasonic, and Er: YAG laser-activated irrigation on Enterococcus faecalis reduction and smear layer/debris removal in root canals.

BACKGROUND: Persistent intraradicular infection remains a major cause of endodontic treatment failure because conventional syringe irrigation may not adequately reach the apical third, dentinal tubules, and canal irregularities. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the antimicrobial efficacy and smear layer/debris removal ability of sonic activation, passive ultrasonic irrigation, and Er: YAG laser-activated irrigation using photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS), relative to conventional syringe irrigation, in prepared root canals infected with a mono-species Enterococcus faec

Assessment of Smear Layer Formation After Caries Removal Using Erbium Laser and Papain-Based Chemo-Mechanical Caries Removal Agent: An In Vitro Scanning Electron Microscopy Study.

Introduction With the advancement in the field of adhesive dentistry, there has been a significant and groundbreaking shift toward the adoption of minimally invasive caries removal techniques where substrate modification is known to enhance adhesive bonding. The smear layer has always been controversial, as its modification helps in bonding, but if contaminated with bacteria, it compromises the formation of a satisfactory marginal seal. Thus, the recognition of the role played by the smear layer highlights the importance of the type of caries removal method employed. Hence, the aim of the pres

Implementation of the thin layer agar method for diagnosis of smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis in a setting with a high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus infection in Homa Bay, Kenya.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a low-cost method, the thin layer agar (TLA) method, for the diagnosis of smear-negative patients. This prospective study was performed in Homa Bay District Hospital in Kenya. Out of 1,584 smear-negative sputum samples, 212 (13.5%) were positive by culture in Löwenstein-Jensen medium (LJ) and 220 (14%) were positive by the TLA method. The sensitivities of LJ and TLA were 71% and 74%, respectively. TLA could become an affordable method for the diagnosis of smear-negative tuberculosis in resource-limited settings, with results availa

A scanning electron microscopy study of diseased root surfaces conditioned with EDTA gel plus Cetavlon after scaling and root planing.

In the present investigation, a scanning electron microscopy analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of the topical application of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) gel associated with Cetavlon (EDTAC) in removing the smear layer and exposing collagen fibers following root surface instrumentation. Twenty-eight teeth from adult humans, single rooted and scheduled for extraction due to periodontal reasons, were selected. Each tooth was submitted to manual (scaling and root planing) instrumentation alone or combined with ultrasonic instruments, with or without etching using a 24% EDTA

Permeability and morphology of dentin after erosion induced by acidic drinks.

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to evaluate 1) the alterations of dentin permeability after single exposure of dentin to several acidic soft drinks with different acid composition; 2) the effectiveness of smear layer on dentin surface to prevent erosion of sound dentin; and 3) the role of brushing procedures. METHODS: Dentin discs from human third molars were prepared. Each disc was treated with 0.5 M neutral EDTA for 5 minutes to remove the smear layer and to calculate the maximum fluid flow rate for each disc (to which an arbitrary value of 100% was assigned) using a pressure appara
