Variable expressivity in Patau syndrome is not all related to trisomy 13 mosaicism.

Patau syndrome (trisomy 13) is very rare in live-born babies. Individuals with this chromosomal syndrome have a short lifespan and are rarely seen beyond infancy. This study is aimed at the clinical spectrum, natural history, and survival of patients with trisomy 13. We reviewed the detailed data of 13 Patau syndrome live-born babies. Among them two individuals were delivered from continuation of pregnancy even after prenatal diagnosis. The remaining 11 patients were born to younger mothers who did not undergo amniocentesis because no major anomalies except for cleft lip/palate were found on p

Impact of tracheostomies on the long-term survival of patients with trisomy 13 syndrome.

In this retrospective cohort study, we investigated the impact of tracheostomies on the long-term survival of children with trisomy 13 syndrome at a Japanese tertiary pediatric center. We compared survival and survival to discharge rates between patients who underwent tracheostomies during their NICU stays (T group, n = 8) and those who did not (non-T group, n = 11). A total of 19 patients enrolled. Median survival in all patients was 673 (266-1535) days. Significant differences in the 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were found between the T and the non-T groups (100% vs. 46%, p = 0.018; 88%

Posterior vortex vein and congenital glaucoma in a patient with trisomy 13 syndrome.

A 4-month-old infant boy presented with a mild manifestation of trisomy 13 syndrome. The severe ocular findings usually associated with this syndrome were not seen. Rather, the patient had bilateral congenital glaucoma with glaucomatous optic disk cupping and, in one eye, a posterior vortex vein. Such findings are unusual in the trisomy 13 syndrome. The posterior vortex vein is a particularly unusual finding previously occurring in myopic eyes.

Trisomy 13, 18, 21, Triploidy and Turner syndrome: the 5T's. Look at the hands.

First trimester spontaneous abortions occur in 15 to 20% of all clinically recognized pregnancies. Chromosomal -anomalies are responsible for more than 50% of spontaneous abortions. The majority (90%) of these chromosomal anomalies are numerical, particularly autosomal trisomies (involving chromosomes 13,16, 18, 21, 22), polyploidy and monosomy X. At birth chromosomal anomalies are still an important cause of congenital malformations occurring in 0,55% of newborns (autosomal: 0,40%, sex chromosomal: 0,15%). Autosomal trisomies result from maternal -meiotic nondisjunction of gametogenesis and t

Evidence for the Oocyte Mosaicism Selection model on the origin of Patau syndrome (trisomy 13).

INTRODUCTION: In 2008, Hultén et al hypothesized that maternal ovarian trisomy 21 mosaicism might be the primary causative factor for fetal Down syndrome. We hypothesize that this theory can be extended to trisomy 13. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We collected fetal ovarian tissue from seven female fetuses between 16 and 23 gestational weeks, following the termination of the pregnancy for non-genetic reasons. All procedures were performed with informed consent and ethical approval from the local ethics committee. We used touch preparation techniques from fetal ovarian tissues and an anti-stromal anti

Congenital malformations in a common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) similar to human 13-trisomy syndrome.

This paper describes the finding of a number of malformations in a live-born common marmoset. The malformations included microphthalmia, ocular hypertelorism, cleft lip and palate and polydactyly. The findings are consistent with and strongly suggest chromosome trisomy similar to that which has been seen in man.

Clinical features and prognosis of a sample of patients with trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome) from Brazil.

Trisomy 13 or Patau syndrome (PS) is a chromosomal disorder characterized by a well known presentation of multiple congenital anomalies. Our objective was to determine the clinical features and prognosis observed in a sample of patients with PS. The series was composed of patients with diagnosis of PS consecutively evaluated by a Clinical Genetics Service from a reference hospital of southern Brazil, in the period between 1975 and 2012. Statistical analysis was performed using PEPI program (version 4.0), with two-tailed Fisher's exact test for comparison of frequencies (P<0.05). The sample con

A well-documented trisomy 13 case presenting with a number of common and uncommon features of the syndrome.

Trisomy 13 is a very rare and lethal autosomal chromosomal malformation syndrome. Its incidence is 1/12,000 births. In this paper, we present a new trisomy 13 case associated with unusual and undescribed findings. This patient was the first child of unrelated parents with advanced maternal and paternal age, at 36 and 38 years, respectively. Unfortunately, the parents did not accept the prenatal diagnosis. The baby was born after 34 weeks of gestation by cesarian section. His birth weight was 1,865 g and he demonstrated typical craniofacial abnormalities for trisomy 13 such as severe microphtha

Persistent congenital milia involving the skin of the whole body in an infant with trisomy 13 syndrome.

Milia are tiny pearly-white cysts on the surface of the skin. In newborns, milia are usually located around the nose and eyes and generally disappear after the first several weeks of life. Trisomy 13 is a severe chromosomal disorder, with various complications. Here, we report a case of a 9-month-old female infant with trisomy 13 who had persistent congenital milia covering her entire body surface.

Syndromic Cleft Lip and Palate in an Infant With Suspected Trisomy 13: Ethical Surgical Decision-making.

Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome) is a rare, life-limiting chromosomal disorder characterized by severe multisystem anomalies and profound neurodevelopmental impairment. Surgical correction of cleft lip and palate in these infants presents complex clinical and ethical challenges, especially when compounded by malnutrition, which significantly increases perioperative risks and influences overall prognosis. This case report is presented in accordance with the CARE guidelines. A 5-month-old male infant presented with multiple congenital anomalies, including bilateral cleft lip, right-sided cleft palate

Facial markers in second- and third-trimester fetuses with trisomy 18 or 13, triploidy or Turner syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of nasal bone (NB) evaluation (including NB length (NBL)), prenasal thickness (PT) measurement, the PT:NBL ratio and the prefrontal space ratio (PFSR) in the identification of fetuses with trisomy 18 or 13, triploidy or Turner syndrome. METHODS: This was a retrospective study using stored midsagittal two-dimensional images of the facial profile of fetuses with trisomy 18 or 13, triploidy or Turner syndrome in the second and third trimesters. For images of acceptable quality, measurements were obtained of NBL (where NB was present), PT, the PT:NBL ratio

Unusual mosaicism of de novo structural abnormalities and ocular anomalies in a male with 13 trisomy syndrome.

A body with the 13 trisomy syndrome was found to have a unique form of mosaicism in which each of the two cell lines had different structural rearrangements. The predominant cell line was partially trisomic for the distal portion of the long arm of chromosome 13, while the minor cell line was trisomic for all of the long arm of 13. The patient is also unusual because he had congenital glaucoma and was still alive at 10 years.

Constitutional Mosaic Trisomy 13 in Two Germ Cell Layers is Different from Patau Syndrome? A Case Report.

The heterogeneous phenotype of known syndromes is a clinical challenge, and harmonized description using globally accepted ontology is desirable. This report attempts phenotypic analysis in a patient of constitutional mosaic trisomy 13 in mesoderm and ectoderm to make globally comparable clinical description. Phenotypic features (minor/major abnormalities) were recorded and matched with the Human Phenotype Ontology terms that were used to query web-based tool Phenomizer. We report here a case of 24-year-old girl born to non consanguineous parents with history of one abortion. Her phenotypic ev

Specificity of splenopancreatic field abnormality in trisomy 13 syndrome: macroscopic and histological analysis in 21 autopsy cases.

Splenopancreatic field abnormalities were carefully examined macroscopically and microscopically in 21 trisomy 13 (TR13) subjects, and the results were compared with those of non-TR13 control cases. Of the 21 TR13 subjects, 12 had intrapancreatic splenic tissue (IPST) and 17 had fusion of the pancreatic tail and splenic hilus and/or accessory spleen (FPS/FPAS). All 21 had IPST and/or FPS/FPAS. Five of 1060 controls (non-TR13) had IPST, while two had FPS/FPAS. On histology the pancreata of TR13 subjects had intralobular ducts, with goblet cells (ILDGC) and microcysts (MC) in 17 and 18 subjects,
