We report the neuropathologic examination of a neonatal case of Turner's syndrome (45,XO). We have found some mild irregularities in the cortical organization, notably in frontal and hippocampal regions. In the frontal cortex such anomalies affected particularly the more superficial layers essentially sparing the migrating process which was largely achieved in its fundamental phases. The hippocampal dentate gyrus appeared abnormally infolded. The cerebellum was hypoplasic and contained three types of abnormalities, at least: abundant paradentate matrix cell nests, a large mass of dysplastic ce

Neoplasia is uncommon in Turner syndrome, although there is some evidence that brain tumors are more common in Turner syndrome patients than in the general population. We describe a woman with Turner syndrome (45,X) with a meningioma, in whom a second neoplasia, basal cell carcinomas of the scalp and nose, developed five years later in the absence of therapeutic radiation. Together with 7 cases of Turner syndrome with meningioma from a population-based survey in the United Kingdom, and 3 other isolated cases in the literature, we review this small number of patients for evidence of risk factor

The incidence of spontaneous puberty in Turner's syndrome is reported to be between 5-10% and, more recently in some series, as high as 20%. In an Italian retrospective multicenter study, of 522 patients older than 12 yr with Turner's syndrome, 84 patients (16, 1%) presented spontaneous pubertal development with menarche that occurred at a chronological age of 13.2 +/- 1.5 yr (mean +/- SD) and a bone age of 12.9 +/- 1.9 yr. Karyotype distribution in the whole group was as follows: 52.1% (272 patients) X-monosomy (45,X), 13.2% (69 patients) mosaicism characterized by X-monosomy and cellular lin

Turner syndrome (TS) results from the loss of one X chromosome in phenotypic females, leading to a range of complications such as short stature, cardiovascular issues, autoimmune disorders, metabolic imbalances, osteoporosis, neurocognitive deficits, hearing loss, abnormalities in endocrine functions, infertility, disruptions in bone metabolism, and neurocognitive deficits. These diverse clinical manifestations necessitate a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and management. Growth hormone therapy stands out as a fundamental treatment for addressing the challenges associ

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Turner syndrome is the most common sex chromosome abnormality in female individuals, affecting 1/2000-1/2500 female newborns. Despite the high incidence of this condition, the mechanisms underlying the development of multiorgan dysfunction have not been elucidated.
RECENT FINDINGS: Clinical features involve multiple organ systems and include short stature, dysmorphic facial features, delayed puberty and gonadal failure, cardiac and renal abnormalities, audiologic abnormalities, and a high prevalence of endocrine and autoimmune disorders. Paucity of available genotype/phenot

Girls with Turner syndrome (TS) are at increased risk of developing insulin resistance and coronary artery disease as a result of hypertension and obesity frequently seen in these patients. On the other hand, it is known that obesity is associated with increased serum levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs: valine; leucine and isoleucine) and aromatic amino acids. The aim of the study is to compare the metabolic fingerprint of girls with TS to the metabolic fingerprint of girls with obesity. Metabolic fingerprinting using an untargeted metabolomic approach was examined in plasma from 46 g

Short stature and growth retardation in girls commonly occur in patients with Turner syndrome. We present a 19-year-old-girl with primary amenorrhea and growth retardation, who has a mosaic karyotype, 46X,i(Xq)[17]/45,X[8]. Classic Turner syndrome has a more severe phenotype than variant causes of Turner syndrome. We present a patient with 46,X,i(Xq) karyotype and compare the clinical and laboratory findings with the classic description of Turner syndrome. Our patient has normal social and psychomotor skills unlike previously reported cases in the literature. This case expands the phenotype-ge

Turner syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal anomalies occurring in live-born females. It has been extensively reviewed in the medical literature, yet little has been discussed regarding the skeletal manifestations that present to the orthopaedic surgeon. It is important for the orthopaedic surgeon to be familiar with the clinical findings and comorbid conditions in Turner syndrome because they may be the first line of diagnosis when a patient presents for short stature, scoliosis, or slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Recent studies have identified the short stature homeobox gene as

Turner syndrome (TS) is a common multiple congenital anomaly syndrome resulting from complete or partial absence of the second X chromosome. In this study, we explore the phenotype of TS in diverse populations using clinical examination and facial analysis technology. Clinical data from 78 individuals and images from 108 individuals with TS from 19 different countries were analyzed. Individuals were grouped into categories of African descent (African), Asian, Latin American, Caucasian (European descent), and Middle Eastern. The most common phenotype features across all population groups were s

In Turner syndrome, linear growth is less than the general population. Consequently, to assess stature in Turner syndrome, condition-specific comparators have been employed. Similar reference curves for cardiac structures in Turner syndrome are currently unavailable. Accurate assessment of the aorta is particularly critical in Turner syndrome because aortic dissection and rupture occur more frequently than in the general population. Furthermore, comparisons to references calculated from the taller general population with the shorter Turner syndrome population can lead to over-estimation of aor

INTRODUCTION: Turner syndrome is characterized by the absence, total or partial, of one X chromosome in females, being one of the most frequent chromosomal abnormalities. Diagnosis is made by karyotype. Turner syndrome manifestations include primary hypogonadism, before or after puberty (gonadal dysgenesis). The degree and extent of gonadal disfunction are variable.
OBJECTIVES: We intended to assess clinical, karyotype, gonadal function and pelvic ultrasound characteristics in women with Turner syndrome.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study of patients with Turner syndrome followed in E

BACKGROUND: Turner syndrome is caused by numeric and structural abnormalities of the X chromosome. An increased frequency of autoimmunity as well as an elevated incidence of autoantibodies was observed in Turner patients. The aim of this study was to conduct a retrospective analysis of the incidence of autoimmunity in 66 Italian patients affected by Turner syndrome.
METHODS: Sixty-six unselected and consecutive Italian Turner patients were recruited. The association between age, karyotype and the presence of clinical/pre-clinical autoimmune disorders and of autoantibodies was examined.

Liver test abnormalities are frequent in adult patients with Turner syndrome, corresponding to various pathophysiological mechanisms. Steatosis, steatofibrosis and steatohepatitis are the most frequently reported lesions, caused by metabolic disorders, which are commonly related to overweight. Marked architectural changes, including nodular regenerative hyperplasia, multiple focal nodular hyperplasia and cirrhosis, found in some patients, are associated with a risk of severe liver-related complications. Architectural changes are often observed and are associated with vascular disorders caused

Neuralgic amyotrophy (Parsonage-Turner syndrome or brachial plexus neuritis) is an uncommon syndrome whose cause is unknown. The suprascapular and axillary nerves and corresponding muscles are affected most frequently. The disorder exhibits a broad range of clinical manifestations, and patients frequently present to physicians of different subspecialties. Accurate diagnosis can be challenging and requires a thorough history and physical examination. Nerve conduction velocity and imaging studies assist in the evaluation. Treatment consists of symptomatic management. Symptoms can persist for mor

Lichen sclerosus was diagnosed at a young age (19, 22 and 37 years) in three women with Turner syndrome. The oldest of these patients had probably suffered from this disorder for over 20 years. The relatively young age of these three patients is remarkable. This observation also suggests an increased frequency of lichen sclerosus among women with Turner syndrome. Immunological and hormonal factors might explain this association. Early detection of lichen sclerosus is important, as malignant transformation into carcinoma of the vulva may occur. It is advisable to perform regular gynaecological

Turner syndrome (TS) is a relatively common neurogenetic disorder characterized by complete or partial monosomy-X in a phenotypic female. TS is associated with a cognitive profile that typically includes intact intellectual function and verbal abilities with relative weaknesses in visual-spatial, executive, and social cognitive domains. In this report, we review previous and current research related to the cognitive profile of TS. We also discuss how cognitive impairments in this syndrome may reflect integrative rather than modular deficits. For example, the less commonly reported areas of ver
