Effects of pesticides on soil invertebrates in laboratory studies: a review and analysis using species sensitivity distributions.

Species sensitivity distributions (SSD) and 5% hazardous concentrations (HC5) are distribution-based approaches for assessing environmental risks of pollutants. These methods have potential for application in pesticide risk assessments, but their applicability for assessing pesticide risks to soil invertebrate communities has not been evaluated. Using data obtained in a systematic review, the present study investigates the relevance of SSD and HC5 for predicting pesticide risks to soil invertebrates. Altogether, 1950 laboratory toxicity data were obtained, representing 250 pesticides and 67 in

Star polycation nanocarrier selectively enhances mesotrione control efficacy via reduced particle size and improved foliar absorption.

BACKGROUND: Nanocarrier-based formulations offer a superior means of enhancing control efficacy and increasing utilization. Star polycation (SPc) was an efficient nanocarrier of insecticides and fungicides. However, whether it could serve as an herbicide nanocarrier needs further study. RESULTS: Here, we evaluated the nanoformulation, permeability, and herbicidal efficacy of SPc assembled with herbicides. Results showed that SPc could spontaneously assemble with each of the three herbicides via electrostatic interactions. Only mesotrione technical concentrate (TC) and formulation (FM) could b

Pesticide Prioritization by Potential Biological Effects in Tributaries of the Laurentian Great Lakes.

Watersheds of the Great Lakes Basin (USA/Canada) are highly modified and impacted by human activities including pesticide use. Despite labeling restrictions intended to minimize risks to nontarget organisms, concerns remain that environmental exposures to pesticides may be occurring at levels negatively impacting nontarget organisms. We used a combination of organismal-level toxicity estimates (in vivo aquatic life benchmarks) and data from high-throughput screening (HTS) assays (in vitro benchmarks) to prioritize pesticides and sites of concern in streams at 16 tributaries to the Great Lakes

Green synthesis of sunlight responsive zinc oxide coupled cadmium sulfide nanostructures for efficient photodegradation of pesticides.

Structural design of semiconductor nanomaterials via facile and green methodology is noteworthy to advance their photocatalytic activity for resolving the problem of energy and environment. Herein, sunlight active zinc oxide coupled with cadmium sulfide (ZnO@CdS) was synthesized by employing the leaf extract of Azadirachta indica. Subsequently, it was used for removal of chlorpyrifos (CP) and atrazine (Atz) pesticides that have shown high persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity in the environment. Synthesized ZnO@CdS nanocomposite was characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic technique

Assessing pesticide wet deposition risk within a small agricultural watershed in the Southeastern Coastal Plain (USA).

Pesticide volatilization and deposition with precipitation is widely documented and has been connected to adverse ecological impact. Here we describe a 3-yr study of current use and legacy pesticides in event-based rain samples within a 123-ha agricultural watershed. Crops in farm fields were documented quarterly with data used to estimate target compound use. The median number of pesticide detections in samples was 6. The fungicide, chlorothalonil which was used most intensively was detected in nearly all samples. It had the highest mean and peak concentrations with total deposition ≈0.1% of

Inhibition of Fenton Reaction-driven Lipid Peroxidation and Anti-inflammatory Activity of Extracts from Roots of Debregeasia Longifolia.

INTRODUCTION: Debregeasia longifolia has been used traditionally in treating inflammatory and oxidative stress-associated disorders, but the potential of this herb in redox modulation has not been fully defined. Lipid peroxidation in biological substrates sensitive to oxygen acts as a good biomarker to determine antioxidant potential. The objective of this paper was to assess the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of D. longifolia root extracts and to determine the connection between those properties and the levels of polyphenols and flavonoids. METHODS: The roots of D. longifolia t

Dye displacement-based colorimetric aptasensor for rapid pesticide detection.

Pesticide poisoning incidents occur frequently due to the high toxicity and widespread availability of these chemicals. Achieving rapid and accurate on-site identification of pesticides in complex matrices, independent of bulky laboratory instrumentation, remains a major technical challenge. Therefore, we developed an absorption spectroscopic sensor exploiting the aggregation and disaggregation behaviors of cyanine dyes in solution. Molecular docking was employed to identify the aptamer binding sites and predict affinities. Upon incubation with the specific aptamer, ICG-COOH monomers form a co

Chemical mixture that targets the epidermal growth factor pathway impairs human trophoblast cell functions.

Pregnant women are exposed to complex chemical mixtures, many of which reach the placenta. Some of these chemicals interfere with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activation, a receptor tyrosine kinase that modulates several placenta cell functions. We hypothesized that a mixture of chemicals (Chem-Mix) known to reduce EGFR activation (polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-126, PCB-153, atrazine, trans-nonachlor, niclosamide, and bisphenol S) would interfere with EGFR-mediated trophoblast cell functions. To test this, we determined the chemicals' EGFR binding ability, EGFR and downstream effec

Coagulation-flocculation followed by catalytic ozonation processes for enhanced primary treatment during wet weather conditions.

Combined sewer overflows (CSO), generated during the wet weather flow from the combination of the inflow and stormwater runoff in sewer system, result in an overflow of untreated wastewater from sewer system, which might ultimately contain different micropollutants (MPs). In this study, a coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) pretreated CSO spiked with MPs was treated by catalytic ozonation using carbon, iron, and peroxide-based catalysts. The catalysts were characterized and their activity on MPs removal was studied at two different ozone (O3) doses (5 and 10 mg L-1). The effect of the

Pervasive Pesticide Contamination of Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Area.

Knowledge of the types and impacts of contaminants occurring in the freshwater wetlands of the Great Barrier Reef catchment area (GBRCA) is limited. The present study examined the presence and concentrations of pesticides occurring in 22 floodplain wetlands, situated in moderate to high-intensity land uses in the GBRCA. The dominant land use within 1 km of the wetlands was sugar cane for 12 wetlands, grazing for 6 wetlands, plantation forestry and conservation for 2 wetlands, and one with an equal mix of land uses. Fifty-nine pesticides and pesticide degradates were detected in the wetlands du

Levels and seasonal variability of pesticides in the rural atmosphere of Southern Ontario.

Air samples were collected continuously in Egbert, Ontario, which is in a rural agricultural area north of Toronto, between March 2006 and September 2007 and analyzed for pesticides of both current and historic use. The fungicide chlorothalonil was present in highest abundance with levels exceeding 2000 pg x m(-3) in the summer. Almost as abundant, with summer time concentrations around 400 to 600 pg x m(-3), were the herbicides atrazine, alachlor, and metolachlor. Other pesticides in current use, such as trifluralin, pendimethalin, chlorpyrifos, endosulfan, and disulfoton were consistently pr

Low-dose agrochemicals and lawn-care pesticides induce developmental toxicity in murine preimplantation embryos.

Occupational exposures to pesticides may increase parental risk of infertility and adverse pregnancy outcomes such as spontaneous abortion, preterm delivery, and congenital anomalies. Less is known about residential use of pesticides and the risks they pose to reproduction and development. In the present study we evaluate environmentally relevant, low-dose exposures to agrochemicals and lawn-care pesticides for their direct effects on mouse preimplantation embryo development, a period corresponding to the first 5-7 days after human conception. Agents tested were those commonly used in the uppe

Synthesis of a biobased resin and its screening as an alternative adsorbent for organic and inorganic micropollutant removal.

The sol-gel route was used to synthesize a biophenolic resin from a blend of Kraft black liquor and condensed tannin. The biobased resin has an amorphous structure and diversified surface functional groups. The biomaterial thermal stability was improved by Kraft black liquor, which increased the fixed carbon yield by 19.78% in an oxidant medium and 9.07% in an inert medium. Moreover, the presence of fixed carbon and char is positively related to the material flame retardant property. Additionally, impedance measurements were used to understand the physical phenomena occurring at the polymeric

Dose-response-defined physiological framework enables comparative analysis of transcriptional response dynamics across multiple herbicides in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Herbicides elicit diverse physiological responses in plants largely due to distinct modes of action of individual compounds. However, it remains unclear how plants differentially respond to herbicides with distinct modes of action when applied at herbicide-specific treatment levels corresponding to comparable degrees of growth inhibition. In this study, we integrated physiological and transcriptomic analyses to characterize the responses of Arabidopsis thaliana exposed to seven herbicides (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, acifluorfen, atrazine, glyphosate, imazethapyr, mesotrione, and paraquat)

Pesticide and Transformation Product Occurrence and Ecological Risks in Irrigation Water of an Intensive Floriculture Region in Ecuador: Targeted and Non-Target Suspect Screening Analyses (2022-2025).

BACKGROUND: Irrigation water can transport pesticides into aquatic environments, threatening ecosystem and human health. Despite these risks, irrigation water quality remains poorly studied and non-regulated in Latin America, and in floricultural regions, revealing a critical monitoring and research gap. METHODS: Between 2022 and 2025, irrigation water, post-harvest facility (PHF) water, river water, and groundwater samples were collected throughout Pedro Moncayo, Ecuador, a pesticide intensive floricultural region. Samples were taken along two irrigation channels from their source in Cayambe

Carbon dioxide-switchable hydrophilicity-assisted lighter-than-water deep eutectic solvent-based liquid-phase microextraction of triazine herbicides from aqueous samples performed in a narrow tube before GC-FID analysis.

Triazine herbicides are widely used agricultural chemicals with high environmental persistence and potential ecotoxicological hazards, necessitating sensitive, precise, and cost-effective analytical methods for their monitoring in water matrices. In this work, a new carbon dioxide-switchable liquid-phase microextraction technique was introduced, leveraging the reversible hydrophilicity transition of an aromatic amine-based deep eutectic solvent for the efficient extraction of simazine, atrazine, and terbutryn from aqueous samples. The menthol : 4-amino-1-naphthol deep eutectic solvent was sele

Modeling Risk Dynamics of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in a Temperate-region Wastewater Effluent-dominated Stream.

Wastewater effluent-dominated streams are becoming increasingly common worldwide, including in temperate regions, with potential impacts on ecological systems and drinking water sources. We recently quantified the occurrence/ spatiotemporal dynamics of pharmaceutical mixtures in a representative temperate-region wastewater effluent-dominated stream (Muddy Creek, Iowa) under baseflow conditions and characterized relevant fate processes. Herein, we quantified the ecological risk quotients (RQs) of 19 effluent-derived contaminants of emerging concern (CECs; including: 14 pharmaceuticals, 2 indust

Beyond neonicotinoids - Wild pollinators are exposed to a range of pesticides while foraging in agroecosystems.

Pesticide exposure is a growing global concern for pollinator conservation. While most current pesticide studies have specifically focused on the impacts of neonicotinoid insecticides toward honeybees and some native bee species, wild pollinators may be exposed to a broader range of agrochemicals. In 2016 and 2017 we collected a total of 637 wild bees and butterflies from the margins of cultivated agricultural fields situated on five Conservation Areas in mid-northern Missouri. Pollinators were composited by individual genera (90 samples) and whole tissues were then analyzed for the presence o
