Effect of Supraglottal Acoustics on Fluid-Structure Interaction During Human Voice Production.

A hydrodynamic/acoustic splitting method was used to examine the effect of supraglottal acoustics on fluid-structure interactions during human voice production in a two-dimensional computational model. The accuracy of the method in simulating compressible flows in typical human airway conditions was verified by comparing it to full compressible flow simulations. The method was coupled with a three-mass model of vocal fold lateral motion to simulate fluid-structure interactions during human voice production. By separating the acoustic perturbation components of the airflow, the method allows is

Wrist pulse diagnosis of stable coronary heart disease based on acoustics waveforms.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As a common pathological pulse, unsmooth pulse has important diagnostic value in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In modern pulse diagnosis, unsmooth pulse plays an important role in the diagnosis of disease location and nature, but there are few studies on it. In this paper, a pulse diagnosis approach based on acoustic waveforms was proposed, the wrist pulse was divided into five layers vertically for the first time. Five layers acoustic waves of the radial artery in stable coronary heart disease (CHD) patients and relatively healthy people were compared to explor

Acoustics modelling of open-cell foam materials from microstructure and constitutive properties.

The dynamic relations for highly porous fibrous materials, having analytical expressions for dynamic viscous drag forces and oscillatory solid-to-fluid heat transfer, are now extended towards open-cell foam materials where the struts of the foam are considered to be primarily cylindrical except in the region of the joints. By also including analytical expressions for the stiffness of the foam cell, an entirely analytically-based model is presented for the acoustics of highly-porous, open-celled foam materials. This approach is extremely efficient, requiring only the mean cell size, mean strut

The effect of room acoustics on the sleep quality of healthy sleepers.

INTRODUCTION: Noise is one of the factors that can seriously disturb sleep, and sound volume is an important factor in this context. One strategy involves avoiding exposure to sounds in the night, while entail the minimization of background noise in a bedroom. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of systematic sound attenuation on nocturnal sleep by influencing sound volume and reverberation within the context of room acoustics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On this basis, we designed a randomized, controlled crossover trial investigating 24 healthy sleepers (15 men and 9 women, aged

Acoustics-catalyzed e-tongues for high-performance detection and identification of sweat metabolites.

The capability for high-precision detection and identification of sweat metabolites is of great importance for personalized healthcare, disease monitoring, and early management of health risks. In this study, we develop an acoustics-catalyzed e-tongue (ACET), which compactly integrates an ultrasonic actuation unit with a biosensor unit based on the oxygen reduction reaction mechanism, enabling substantially enhanced sweat metabolite detection and identification compared with the standalone biosensor unit. Owing to the synergistic effects of ultrasonic excitation and the accompanying acoustoflu

Cepstral Acoustics of Pre- and Post-Swallow Voice in Persons with Neurogenic Dysphagia.

The laryngeal function can be significantly affected by the neurological insults, in turn disturbing both voice and swallowing functions. Several researchers have explored voice evaluation in persons with dysphagia. But a significant research gap in the inclusion of acoustic and cepstral measures still exists. The current study aimed to identify the post-swallow voice changes (DSV) in individuals diagnosed with neurogenic dysphagia. A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted with 63 adults diagnosed with oropharyngeal dysphagia and 65 phono-normals without swallowing difficulties. All p

Exploring Bidirectional Associations Between Voice Acoustics and Objective Motor Metrics in Parkinson's Disease.

Background/Objectives: Speech and motor control share overlapping neural mechanisms, yet their quantitative relationships in Parkinson's disease (PD) remain underexplored. This study investigated bidirectional associations between acoustic voice features and objective motor metrics to better understand how vocal and motor systems relate in PD. Methods: Cross-sectional baseline data from participants in a randomized neuromodulation trial were analyzed (n = 13). Motor performance was captured using an Integrated Motion Analysis Suite (IMAS), which enabled quantitative, objective characterization

Daily Laryngeal Kinematics and Acoustics Throughout the Menstrual Cycle: A Longitudinal Case Study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous investigations demonstrated voice changes corresponding to menstrual cycle phases, but few explored longitudinal cycle-to-cycle variations. The aim of this longitudinal case study was to describe changes in acoustics, laryngeal kinematics, vocal effort, and ability to produce high soft phonation in relation to menstrual cycle phases over the course of multiple cycles in a single normally cycling individual. METHODS: Data were obtained from a 34-year-old professional voice user who had self-collected daily videostroboscopy, acoustics, vocal effort rating, and high soft phon

Perception and acoustics of voiceless initial stops produced by alaryngeal speakers in Taiwan.

This study investigates three aspirated voiceless stop consonants and their unaspirated counterparts produced in Taiwan's Southern Min dialect by 10 laryngeal speakers (LA), 10 speakers with pneumatic artificial larynxes (PA), and 10 oesophageal speakers (ES). Listeners' perceptions of the accuracy of the three groups in producing these six stop consonants were also examined. Each of the voiceless stop consonants /p, pʰ, t, tʰ, k, kʰ/, followed by the vowel /a/, was represented by a Southern Min character and appeared three times on a list in random order. Each character had a consonant-vowel

Tree crickets optimize the acoustics of baffles to exaggerate their mate-attraction signal.

Object manufacture in insects is typically inherited, and believed to be highly stereotyped. Optimization, the ability to select the functionally best material and modify it appropriately for a specific function, implies flexibility and is usually thought to be incompatible with inherited behaviour. Here, we show that tree-crickets optimize acoustic baffles, objects that are used to increase the effective loudness of mate-attraction calls. We quantified the acoustic efficiency of all baffles within the naturally feasible design space using finite-element modelling and found that design affects

Time-reversal acoustics and ultrasound-assisted convection-enhanced drug delivery to the brain.

Time-reversal acoustics is an effective way of focusing ultrasound deep inside heterogeneous media such as biological tissues. Convection-enhanced delivery is a method of delivering drugs into the brain by infusing them directly into the brain interstitium. These two technologies are combined in a focusing system that uses a "smart needle" to simultaneously infuse fluid into the brain and provide the necessary feedback for focusing ultrasound using time-reversal acoustics. The effects of time-reversal acoustics-focused ultrasound on the spatial distribution of infused low- and high-molecular w

Fractionation of radiation treatment in acoustics. Rationale and evidence in comparison to radiosurgery.

Stereotactic fractionated radiotherapy has been proposed as a strategy to improve upon the results of single-fraction radiosurgery. The rationale for the strategy is that fractionation will allow complciations to be reduced while maintaining the same degree of long-term tumor control. This paper reviews the radiobiological arguements for fractionating radiation treatment of acoustic neuromas and examines claims for improvement in outcome.

Aero-acoustics of silicone rubber lip reeds for alternative voice production in laryngectomees.

To improve voice quality after laryngectomy, a small pneumatic sound source to be incorporated in a regular tracheoesophageal shunt valve was designed. This artificial voice source consists of a single floppy lip reed, which performs self-sustaining flutter-type oscillations driven by the expired pulmonary air that flows through the tracheoesophageal shunt valve along the outward-striking lip reed. In this in vitro study, aero-acoustic data and detailed high-speed digital image sequences of lip reed behavior are obtained for 10 lip configurations. The high-speed visualizations provide a more e

Plant Acoustics for Evaluating Vase Life in Chrysanthemums: A Novel and Noninvasive Method.

Vase life is a key determinant of cut flower quality and market value. Conventional vase life assessment relies on visual inspection and physiological monitoring over several days to weeks, making it labor- and time-intensive. This study introduces a rapid and noninvasive approach using plant acoustics to assess postharvest vase-life-related variation in cut chrysanthemum flowers. Six chrysanthemum cultivars were grown under two supplemental lighting treatments (Hybrid and LED) and two planting densities (54 and 74 plants m-2). Acoustic monitoring was compared with optical microscopy for the a

An elastic piezoelectric nanomembrane with double noise reduction for high-quality bandpass acoustics.

Polymer piezoelectrics with high electromechanical energy conversion (HEEC) are very promising for flexible acoustoelectric devices. However, reducing thickness and improving ordered polarization and ferroelectricity while maintaining high mechanical strength pose enormous fabrication challenges for polymer piezoelectric membranes-additionally, noise management in the acoustoelectric conversion remains an open issue. Here, we present a hydro-levitation superspreading approach for fabricating polymer nanomembranes with ordered crystalline phases and sub-nanostructures on the water surface. The

Topological acoustics and geometric phase sensing for non-destructive localization and characterization of defects.

Ensuring structural reliability in aerospace and advanced manufacturing demands non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques that are both accurate and adaptable. We present a flexible framework based on geometric phase sensing, which captures topological shifts in acoustic fields to characterize internal defects. By integrating broadband excitation with remote sensing methods such as laser Doppler vibrometry, we demonstrate defect localization and tracking using a geometric phase change-index (GPC-I) and extend the method to quantitative pore structure analysis through global geometric phase m
