Full-endoscopic lumbar spine surgery using working-channel endoscopes: technical tips for practical effectiveness.

INTRODUCTION: Full-endoscopic spine surgery (FESS) has emerged as an effective and minimally invasive option for the surgical treatment of degenerative lumbar spine disease. FESS can be characterized as endoscopic spine surgery conducted via the percutaneous uniportal approach using working-channel endoscopes under continuous saline irrigation. Despite available evidence, the clinical application of this endoscopic procedure may require more work for standard spine surgeons. Therefore, this review aims to provide comprehensive technical tips to ensure the practical effectiveness of FESS. AREA

Quality control of rigid endoscopes: a comparative study between ScopeControl® and surgeons' evaluation.

BACKGROUND: In central sterile services departments (CSSD), the functionality of rigid endoscopes, which are complex and fragile reusable devices, is usually controlled visually and is considered a complex and subjective task. ScopeControl® was developed to provide an automated quality control of rigid endoscopes by measuring the value of six parameters: viewing angle (VA), field of view (FV), color correctness (CC), light transmission (LT), fibers transmission (FT), and focus (FC). The aim of the present study was to assess the ability of ScopeControl® to pre-emptively identify endoscope defe

Posture Tracking of Active Capsule Endoscopes Integrated with Magnetic Actuation Using Hall-Effect Sensors.

A capsule endoscope (CE) provides noninvasive access to the gastrointestinal tract, offering diagnostic information that cannot be obtained through external imaging alone. However, during the examination inside the stomach, the CE's posture may change rapidly as it moves within a dynamically deforming organ, making it difficult to determine its orientation using only the onboard camera feedback. To address this problem, this study proposes a method that employs an external array of Hall Effect Sensors (HES) to estimate the capsule's position and orientation in real time, based on the magnetic

Light intensity distribution in images from rigid endoscopes used in minimal access sinus surgery.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To investigate the pattern of intensity levels in images generated by the two most commonly used rigid endoscopes angulations in sinus surgery: 0° and 30°. METHODS: An enclosed light box containing an optical square grid, under endoscope illumination set just below saturation level, was used for measuring light distribution levels across test images. Endoscopes with 0° and 30° angulations were tested at 10 mm from the grid, typical for sinus surgery. The grid was set perpendicular to the axis of the shaft of the endoscope. The grayscale light intensity (GLI) levels (0 =

A novel, cost-effective lens irrigation system for rigid endoscopes in transnasal endoscopic surgery.

BACKGROUND: In transnasal endoscopic surgical procedures, the lens of the endoscope often becomes fogged or smeared with mucus or blood. The surgeon has to clean the lens and reintroduce the endoscope multiple times during the surgery, making it a tiring process. METHODS: This paper describes an innovative lens irrigation system comprising a modified 16 Fr Foley catheter, a 20 cc or 50 cc syringe filled with warm normal saline (0.9 per cent), and a commercially available intravenous infusion set. The rigid endoscope is introduced into the catheter through the urine draining port. When the len

Comparison of capabilities and limitations of endoscopes in endoscopic ear surgeries using 3D printed models.

PURPOSE: Endoscopic ear surgery has become a popular operative approach to treat middle ear diseases. Surgeons use either 0° or 30° endoscopes worldwide. The main aim of the work was to compare the properties of these two types of endoscopes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Since this type of evaluation is hard to perform in vivo during the actual surgery, we designed 3D printed temporal bone models with different levels of complexity. The evaluation of endoscopes was based on image analysis or visibility of anatomical structures. RESULTS: The results show that a 30° endoscope offers a view of lateral

Nosocomial infections from contaminated endoscopes: a flawed automated endoscope washer. An investigation using molecular epidemiology.

Approximately 1 year after purchase of one manufacturer's automated endoscope washing machine, we began to detect heavy contamination of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopes cultured after cleaning and disinfection in the washer. During the first 6 months of 1988, 77% of surveillance cultures (20-mL flush through the biopsy channel) were positive for gram-negative bacilli (median concentration, 10(5) cfu/mL), most frequently Pseudomonas aeruginosa serotype 10. During the first 19 months of use of the washer, nosocomial post-UGI endoscopy colonization or infections with P. aeruginosa increas

Quantitative Assessment of Endoscope Tip Angulation Performance in New Endoscopes: A Cross-Sectional Quality Improvement Study.

Background Endoscope tip angulation is a key determinant of procedural maneuverability, yet routine quantitative assessment is not standardized, and data are limited on how quickly new endoscopes fall below manufacturer-specified performance benchmarks during routine use. The aim of this study was to evaluate tip angulation performance in new, apparently functional endoscopes after a period of clinical use and to characterize the prevalence and pattern of below-tolerance findings by scope type. Methods We performed a quality improvement project to evaluate the tip angulation of newly issued en

Evaluation of a new technology for terminal sterilization of flexible endoscopes using hydrogen peroxide gas plasma.

In laboratory testing, a novel hydrogen peroxide gas plasma endoscope sterilizer consistently reduced vegetative organisms, but not bacterial spores, to undetectable levels in the presence of high organism load (≥6.5 log10) and organic material and salts. These findings highlight the importance of meticulous cleaning of endoscopes prior to sterilization.
