BACKGROUND: Diparetic cerebral palsy affects approximately 2 in 1000 people, and can result in gait impairments such as excessive knee flexion and excessive ankle dorsiflexion during the stance phase in gait. Short-term clinical trials using robotic rehabilitation devices have shown gait improvements comparable to invasive multilevel surgery for spastic cerebral palsy. This study aimed to determine if the stiffness of articulated forms of ankle-foot orthoses influences the effectiveness of a powered knee-ankle-foot orthosis on crouch gait reduction. It was hypothesized that AFO stiffness would

In individuals with musculoskeletal disorders such as chronic metatarsalgia, foot orthoses (FOs) are frequently prescribed to reduce plantar pressure, improve foot function and alleviate pain. During walking, medially wedged FOs (MWFO + MPs) with a metatarsal pad are more effective than standard FOs (SFOs) in reducing plantar pressure under the metatarsal heads. As stair ambulation involves higher physical demands than walking and modifies plantar loading, we questioned whether FOs remain effective during more challenging tasks. This study aimed to determine whether MWFO + MPs reduce peak plan

BACKGROUND: Foot orthoses (FOs) are commonly prescribed to reduce pain and improve function in individuals with musculoskeletal disorders, including those with chronic metatarsalgia (CM). Reducing the mechanical overload under the metatarsal heads during locomotion is the central point of the treatment for CM. Medially wedged FOs (MWFOs) with a metatarsal pad could further reduce pressure loading under the metatarsal heads and modify foot and ankle biomechanics compared to standard FOs (SFOs).
RESEARCH QUESTION: Do MWFOs further decrease the peak plantar pressure under the metatarsal heads in

Previous research exploring the effects of tactile feedback in standing balance protocols may have generated results that misrepresent the modulatory capabilities of cutaneous afference on generating motor output responses. The neurosensory mechanism of textured foot orthoses to maximize the activation of cutaneous mechanoreceptors is through repetitive foot sole skin indentation. Thus, the purpose of this experimental protocol was to investigate muscular activity amplitude changes during the stance phase of gait, specifically when walking on level ground and when stepping onto a raised wedge,

Jumping is involved in a wide range of sports and activities, and foot orthoses (FO) are suggested to enhance performance and prevent injury. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate whether using FO with different modifications affects jump landing biomechanics and improves performance in healthy individuals. The search strategy included 7 databases that identified 19 studies. The study quality was evaluated using a modified Downs and Black index. The primary outcome measures were joint kinematics, kinetics, muscle activity, vertical jump height, and horizontal jump distance. Our

In order to determine if the use of antipronation taping could be used to direct foot orthoses prescription, seven high school athletes with lower extremity or foot pain caused by overuse stress were taped for 3 days during practice sessions. A visual pain scale and the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure sports subscale were used to monitor pain and function improvement caused by taping. If the taping was effective, foot orthotics were fabricated and posted according to the change in foot posture created by the tape. After wearing the foot orthotics for 4 weeks, all athletes reported a substantial

We examined the effect of ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) on gait and energy expenditure in children with spina bifida. Nine boys and three girls, 6 to 16 years of age, took part in the study. There were four children each with L4, L5, and sacral level lesions. Each child underwent gait analysis and energy consumption studies with and without AFOs. Walking speed was faster with AFOs (mean, 58 m/min) than without (mean, 50 m/min, p < 0.01). Stride length improved significantly (p < 0.001) from 0.89 m barefoot to 1.08 m with AFOs. Double support time was decreased from 0.32 seconds barefoot to 0.28 s

Calf claudication is a significant cause of walking limitation for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). Ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) are leg devices that can reduce the physical demands on the calf muscles during ambulation. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of AFO on walking ability in patients with PAD. This was an open-label, interventional trial including 15 patients with calf claudication who were fit with AFO. Patients completed graded treadmill testing, followed by 12 weeks of unstructured community-based walking using the AFO ad libitum. Comparison of peak

INTRODUCTION: There is limited evidence supporting the podiatric treatment of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). This multicentre randomised controlled trial aimed to determine whether preformed foot orthoses (FOs) impacted on pain and quality of life (QoL) in children with JIA.
METHODS: Eligible children were randomised to receive either 'fitted' FOs with customised chair-side corrections or 'control' FOs made without corrections. Changes in pain and QoL were measured using a visual analogue scale and Paediatric Quality of Life questionnaire, respectively. JIA children were a

PURPOSE: Foot orthoses are a standard option to treat overuse injury. Biomechanical data providing mechanisms of foot orthoses' effectiveness are sparse. Stability of the ankle joint complex might be a key factor. The purpose was therefore to analyze neuromuscular activity of the musculus peroneus longus in runners with overuse injury symptoms treated with foot orthoses.
METHODS: A total of 99 male and female runners with overuse injury symptoms randomized in a control group (CO) and an orthoses group (OR) were analyzed on a treadmill at 3.3 m·s(-1) before and after an 8-wk foot orthoses inte
