Four approaches to the investigation of connections between language by hand and language by eye are described and illustrated with studies from a decade-long research program. In the first approach, multigroup structural equation modeling is applied to reading and writing measures given to typically developing writers to examine unidirectional and bidirectional relationships between specific components of the reading and writing systems. In the second approach, structural equation modeling is applied to a multivariate set of language measures given to children and adults with reading and writ

The present investigation addresses two primary hypotheses: (a) that a subset of children with developmental language disorders exhibits significantly more disfluencies than other children with language disorders and (b) that differences between the disfluent and nondisfluent groups observed in fluency may be related to differences in language deficits. Spontaneous language samples from 60 preschool children with developmental language disorders were analyzed for frequency and type of disfluencies. Comparisons of the frequency of disfluencies across subjects revealed that a subset of 10 subjec

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated Stroop interference effects in young adult and older deaf American Sign Language (ASL) and English bilinguals with ASL and English stimuli.
METHOD: Deaf ASL-English bilinguals (n = 108; aged 21-88) signed their responses in two computerized Stroop tasks, one with ASL videos of color signs and one with printed English color words. Participants saw 120 trials in each language with 84 congruent and 36 incongruent trials.
RESULTS: Even though participants responded in ASL in both tasks, Stroop effects were larger with English than with ASL stimuli in bot

INTRODUCTION: Both multilingualism and developmental language disorder (DLD) may be associated with inferior performance in the majority language, albeit for different reasons. At the same time, there is a growing body of evidence that multilingualism may have a positive effect on foreign language performance. This study tests the hypothesis that the positive effects of multilingualism on foreign language learning may be smaller in children with DLD compared to their multilingual peers with typical language development.
METHODS: In a 2 × 2 design, we compare the effects of multilingualism and

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between language load and articulatory variability in children with language and speech sound disorders, including childhood apraxia of speech.
METHOD: Forty-six children, ages 48-92 months, participated in the current study, including children with speech sound disorder, developmental language disorder (aka specific language impairment), childhood apraxia of speech, and typical development. Children imitated (low language load task) then retrieved (high language load task) agent + action phrases. Articulatory variability was q

Communicative speech is a type of language use that involves goal-directed action targeted at another person based on social interactive knowledge. Previous studies regarding one's first language (L1) have treated the theory of mind system, which is associated with understanding others, and the sensorimotor system, which is associated with action simulation, as important contributors to communication. However, little is known about the neural basis of communication in a second language (L2), which is limited in terms of its use as a communication tool. In this fMRI study, we manipulated the ty

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) has been explained by two broad classes of hypotheses, which posit either a deficit specific to grammar, or a non-linguistic processing impairment. Here we advance an alternative perspective. According to the Procedural Deficit Hypothesis (PDH), SLI can be largely explained by the abnormal development of brain structures that constitute the procedural memory system. This system, which is composed of a network of inter-connected structures rooted in frontal/basal-ganglia circuits, subserves the learning and execution of motor and cognitive skills. Crucially, r

For families of deaf children, early language planning is often shaped by high-pressure decisions and conflicting professional advice. This brief introduces Family Language Policy (FLP) as a practical, strengths-based framework for supporting communication decisions following cochlear implantation. Rather than framing oral and visual languages as competing approaches, FLP acknowledges the diverse values, beliefs, and contexts that shape each family's choices. Drawing on bilingualism research and findings from (McMenamin, 2019) this article highlights that developmental outcomes are not determi

Despite the development of novel tools for automatic food quality control, human taste perception is difficult to represent on computers in textual or conceptual space forms. Wine is a particularly interesting object of taste studies because of its elaborate terminology. We investigate taste perception at three different levels: the chemical composition of wine (∼100 parameters), the interaction of ligands with taste receptors (<10 parameters), and wine language terminology (∼25 axes). Wine terminology is studied via the analysis of binary oppositions. Given that wine terminology is often perc

Effective language processing in emergencies is crucial for professionals, including firefighters, soldiers, and doctors. Substantial research has been undertaken on language processing in silence, with several studies indicating the impact of noise on language processing in non-emergencies. However, it remains unclear about the neural mechanisms involved in language processing during emergencies, especially the role of the language network (LN) and the default mode network (DMN) in such contexts. In this study, we adopted functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate brain acti

There are many variables having an impact on the spoken language acquisition of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children; therefore, it is critical for parents and professionals to have appropriate tools to monitor language acquisition. The Spoken Language Checklist (SLC) was developed to monitor and identify developmental milestones in a user-friendly checklist format that includes norms. The availability of the SLC will help parents and professionals to monitor the spoken language development of DHH children and provide interventions that should any delays be observed. Recognizing these delay

Spatial demonstratives are powerful linguistic tools used to establish joint attention. Identifying the meaning of semantically underspecified expressions like "this one" hinges on the integration of linguistic and visual cues, attentional orienting and pragmatic inference. This synergy between language and extralinguistic cognition is pivotal to language comprehension in general, but especially prominent in demonstratives. In this study, we aimed to elucidate which neural architectures enable this intertwining between language and extralinguistic cognition using a naturalistic fMRI paradigm.

Examined the effects of two instructional methods on language generalization and long-term retention in 23 adults with autism and severe to profound mental retardation. Analog language teaching employed discrete trials in a controlled setting concentrating on discrimination and identification of materials. Natural language teaching emphasized instruction through interactions that occurred incidentally to training students in the use of materials to perform functional tasks. Assessments were conducted under conditions favoring analog teaching to assure against partiality toward natural language

According to research findings, most students who experience foreign language learning problems are thought to have overt or subtle native language learning difficulties, primarily with phonological processing. A recent study by the authors showed that when a multisensory structured language approach to teaching Spanish was used with a group of at-risk high school students, the group's pre- and posttest scores on native language phonological processing, verbal memory and vocabulary, and foreign language aptitude measures significantly improved. In this replication and follow-up study, the auth

Speech-comprehension difficulties are common among older people. Standard speech tests do not fully capture such difficulties because the tests poorly resemble the context-rich, story-like nature of ongoing conversation and are typically available only in a country's dominant/official language (e.g., English), leading to inaccurate scores for native speakers of other languages. Assessments for naturalistic, story speech in multiple languages require accurate, time-efficient scoring. The current research leverages modern large language models (LLMs) in native English speakers and native speaker

OBJECTIVES: To enhance the performance of large language models (LLMs) in biomedical natural language processing (BioNLP) by introducing a domain-specific instruction dataset and examining its impact when combined with multi-task learning principles.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created the BioInstruct, comprising 25 005 instructions to instruction-tune LLMs (LLaMA 1 and 2, 7B and 13B version). The instructions were created by prompting the GPT-4 language model with 3-seed samples randomly drawn from an 80 human curated instructions. We employed Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) for parameter-efficient

As one of the most common neurological diseases in children, epilepsy affects 0.9-2% of children. Complex interactions among the etiologies of epilepsy, interictal discharges, seizures, and antiepileptic drugs lead to cognitive impairments in children with epilepsy. Since epilepsy is considered as a network disorder, in which seizures have a widespread impact on many parts of the brain, childhood epilepsy can even affect the normal development of language. About 25% of children with epilepsy do not respond to medications; therefore, brain surgery is considered as a treatment option for some of

BACKGROUND: Children who meet language test criteria for specific language impairment (SLI) are not necessarily the same as those who are referred to a speech and language therapist.
AIMS: To consider how far this discrepancy reflects insensitivity of traditional language tests to clinically important features of language impairment.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: A total of 245 twin children, 52 of whom had been referred to a speech and language therapist for assessment or intervention, were studied. They were given a battery of language tests and their parents completed the Children's Communication
