Stereological analyses of reward system nuclei in maternally deprived/separated alcohol drinking rats.

The experience of early life stress can trigger complex neurochemical cascades that influence emotional and addictive behaviors later in life in both adolescents and adults. Recent evidence suggests that excessive alcohol drinking and drug-seeking behavior, in general, are co-morbid with depressive-like behavior. Both behaviors are reported in humans exposed to early life adversity, and are prominent features recapitulated in animal models of early life stress (ELS) exposure. Currently, little is known about whether or how ELS modulates reward system nuclei. In this study we use operant condit

Maternal vitamin B12 deprivation exacerbates offspring obesity by reducing early-life colonization with Bifidobacterium pseudolongum.

Vitamin B12 deficiency during pregnancy and lactation is common, yet its mechanistic impact on reproductive outcomes and offspring health remains poorly understood. Here, we show that maternal dietary vitamin B12 deprivation not only impairs maternal glucose metabolism and reproductive outcomes but also exacerbates high-fat-diet-induced obesity in offspring. These effects are mediated by gut microbiota and associated with a marked reduction of Bifidobacterium pseudolongum (B. pseudolongum) in both dams and their offspring. Maternal vitamin B12 deprivation limits early-life acquisition of B. ps

Maternal neighborhood deprivation and its association with early childhood neurodevelopmental impairment in extremely preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate whether maternal Area Deprivation Index (ADI) is associated with neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) at age 2 in extremely preterm infants. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of infants <29 weeks' gestation at four NICUs spanning multiple US regions. We analyzed the relationship between ADI and NDI, defined as no/mild, moderate, or severe based on the lowest component score on the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development exam, using a Bayesian ordinal cumulative logit hurdle model. Adjustments included sex, birthweight, maternal race/ethnicity, outborn, severe

Influence of maternal socioeconomic deprivation and living environment on newborn bloodspot 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels.

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D deficiency in neonates can have life-threatening consequences, hence the knowledge of risk factors is essential. This study aimed to explore the effect of maternal socioeconomic status (SES) on newborn 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations. DESIGN: Over two 1-week periods (winter and summer of 2019), 3000 newborn heel prick dried blood spots (DBS) and additional data of newborns, from a regional newborn screening laboratory (52° N) in the West Midlands, UK, were gathered. Post code was replaced with lower layer super output area (LSOA). Index of Multiple Deprivation

Neonatal maternal deprivation facilitates the expression of a panic-like escape behavior in adult rats.

A wealth of evidence associates disruptions of the parent-infant relationship (e.g. childhood parental loss or parental neglect) with the later appearance of panic disorder. In rodents, neonatal maternal separation and maternal deprivation (MD) are reported to increase the expression of anxiety-related defensive responses in adult animals. However, little is known about the long-term consequences of these early-life stressors in animal models of panic. We here investigated the effects of a single 24 h-episode of MD on post-natal day 11 (PND 11) in adult male Wistar rats submitted to two animal

Intranasal oxytocin administration improves depression-like behaviors in adult rats that experienced neonatal maternal deprivation.

Oxytocin (OT), a hypothalamic neuropeptide, has been implicated in the regulation of social behaviors in rodents and humans. This study assessed the effects of intranasal administration of OT on depressive-like behaviors and hippocampal neurogenesis in adult rats following neonatal maternal deprivation (NMD). Here, we show that NMD resulted in significant depression-like behaviors, as indicated by decreases in physical activity and emotional reactivity in a novel environment, in 2-month-old animals. Notably, the OT levels in the plasma, hypothalamus, and hippocampus were decreased in these ani

Maternal deprivation effects on brain plasticity and recognition memory in adolescent male and female rats.

Data from both human and animal studies suggest that exposure to stressful life events at neonatal stages may increase the risk of psychopathology at adulthood. In particular, early maternal deprivation, 24 h at postnatal day (pnd) 9, has been associated with persistent neurobehavioural changes similar to those present in developmental psychopathologies such as depression and schizophrenic-related disorders. Most neuropsychiatric disorders first appear during adolescence, however, the effects of MD on adolescent animals' brain and behaviour have been scarcely explored. In the present study, we

Neonatal maternal deprivation modifies feeding in response to pharmacological and behavioural factors in adult rats.

Neonatal maternal deprivation permanently modifies the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and other neurobiological and behavioural parameters in rats. The HPA axis plays a central role in the control of feeding, and participates in the anorexigenic action of dexfenfluramine and restraint stress, and in the orexigenic action of a cafeteria diet. Therefore, we investigated whether maternal deprivation modifies feeding responses to these factors. Experimental pups were separated for 24h from the mother 5 or 14 days after birth. The anorexigenic response to both dexfenfluramine and restrain

Long-term effects of neonatal maternal deprivation and ACTH on hippocampal mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptors.

In the brain, corticosteroids bind to two types of receptors, the classical glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). The effects of different manipulations taking place during early ontogeny on GR and MR binding properties were examined in the adult hippocampus. Infant rats at postnatal day (pnd) 3 were deprived of maternal contact for 24 h and injected with saline or ACTH1-24 at the end of the deprivation period. They were then returned to their dams and weaned on pnd 21. At pnd 48, they were sacrificed (24 h post adrenalectomy) and the hippocampal MR and GR measu

Effects of maternal deprivation on adrenal and behavioural responses in rats with anterodorsal thalami nuclei lesions.

There is evidence that repeated maternal isolation of neonatal rats may influence both emotional behavior and Hypothalamic-Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) activity. On the other hand the Anterodorsal Thalami Nuclei (ADTN) exerts an inhibitory influence on the hypophyso-adrenal system under basal and stressful conditions. In the present work we investigated whether neonatal maternal deprivation produces long term effects on the ADTN regulation of behavioral patterns (open field test) and on HPA axis activity. Specifically, we sought to determine whether adult female rats with ADTN lesions, previously i

Effect of maternal deprivation on milk intake in normal and bilaterally facial nerve-injured developing rats.

We examined effect of maternal deprivation (2, 4 and 6h) on milk intake in developing rats. Milk intake was obtained by body weight gain after 1h lactation. The amounts of milk intake significantly differed depending on the duration of the deprived periods at P7 and P14 with proportional increase by longer deprivation. Further, milk intake was measured in the bilaterally facial nerve-injured neonatal rats. The results show that milk intake is increased during development affected by maternal deprivation, and that milk intake of the facial nerve-injured group is decreased by 35% (2h), 7% (4h) a

Neighborhood deprivation and iodine levels influence air pollution effects on maternal thyroid function in early pregnancy.

Exposure to air pollution during pregnancy that disrupts thyroid function can lead to adverse health outcomes in mother and child. We evaluated the overall effect and critical exposure window of residential ambient air pollution exposures on thyroid function in the MADRES pregnancy cohort. We also investigated whether these associations varied by iodine deficiency status and neighborhood deprivation. Early pregnancy (6-20 weeks) serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) were measured for 217 mothers. Daily residential ambient air pollution exposures (PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and

Administration of memantine reverses behavioral, histological, and electrophysiological abnormalities in rats subjected to early maternal deprivation.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a severe and chronic neurodevelopmental disorder with onset occurring during adolescence or early adulthood; notwithstanding, the brain dysfunction occurs before the disease and is not clinically evident. Recently, memantine (MEM) had been postulated as an effective preventive treatment in rats. In this study, was performed the Early Maternal Deprivation (EMD) protocol in Sprague-Dawley rats, establishing four groups (control, EMD, EMD treated with MEM, and MEM treatment). Behavioral parameters such as active linking (AL) and T maze were evaluated as well as quantitative

Long-Term Effects of Maternal Deprivation on Redox Regulation in Rat Brain: Involvement of NADPH Oxidase.

Maternal deprivation (MD) causes perinatal stress, with subsequent behavioral changes which resemble the symptoms of schizophrenia. The NADPH oxidase is one of the major generators of reactive oxygen species, known to play a role in stress response in different tissues. The aim of this study was to elucidate the long-term effects of MD on the expression of NADPH oxidase subunits (gp91phox, p22phox, p67phox, p47phox, and p40phox). Activities of cytochrome C oxidase and respiratory chain Complex I, as well as the oxidative stress parameters using appropriate spectrophotometric techniques were an

Effects of Bromelain in Maternal Deprivation and Social Isolation Models of Schizophrenia in Male BALB/c Mice.

Bromelain is a mixture of enzymes found in several parts of the pineapple plant, including the stem, fruit, leaves, and peel. Its use was recommended to slow down the progression of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Although studies have examined the beneficial effects of bromelain (Br) in neurological disorders, its detailed benefits in schizophrenia are still poorly understood. We, thus, modeled schizophrenia using two developmental methods. In the first experiment, postweaning social isolation (SI) method where male mice were weaned at postnatal day (PND) 21 and isolated i

Effect of maternal deprivation on acetylcholinesterase activity and behavioral changes on the ketamine-induced animal model of schizophrenia.

Maternal deprivation has been associated with physiological and developmental changes that may be related to an increased risk for childhood and adult neuropsychiatric diseases. A growing number of studies demonstrated the importance of childhood experiences in the development of psychosis and schizophrenia in adulthood. Therefore, the present study investigated different behavior responses in rats following maternal deprivation and/or ketamine treatment in adulthood. Male rats were subjected to maternal deprivation for 180 min from postnatal day-01 to postnatal day-10. We evaluated locomotor

Maternal mortality, tuberculosis and social deprivation in Madrid during the second and third decades of the 20th century.

In this paper we jointly study maternal mortality and tuberculosis during the second and third decades of the 20th century in Madrid. Nicknamed the "city of death", the Spanish capital was marked by a high mortality where tuberculosis accounted for approximately 26/28 % of all deaths of women of reproductive age. Using a large longitudinal individual-level database including causes of death, we discuss the definitions of maternal mortality, then highlight its high level in the Spanish capital. However, the risk of dying was significantly lower for migrant women than for native. In the context

Abnormality of anxious behaviors and functional connectivity between the amygdala and the frontal lobe in maternally deprived monkeys.

OBJECTIVE: Anxious behaviors often occur in individuals who have experienced early adversity. Anxious behaviors can bring many hazards, such as social withdrawal, eating disorders, negative self-efficacy, self-injurious thoughts and behaviors, anxiety disorders, and even depression. Abnormal behavior are is closely related to changes in corresponding circuit functions in the brain. This study investigated the relationship between brain circuits and anxious behaviors in maternal-deprived rhesus monkey animal model, which mimic early adversity in human. METHODS: Twenty-five rhesus monkeys (Maca

The effects of neonatal maternal deprivation and chronic unpredictable stresses on migraine-like behaviors in adult rats.

BACKGROUND: Stress is known to cause migraine. This study investigates the effects of neonatal maternal deprivation (MD) and chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) on migraine in rats. METHODS: Seventy rats were randomly divided into ten groups (five groups of each sex, and seven rats/group). The groups included: untreated intact, nitroglycerin (NTG) only, NTG + MD, NTG + CUS (10 weeks after birth), and NTG + MD + CUS. For the induction of MD, pups were separated from their mothers from postnatal day 2 to day 14. The CUS was conducted by daily exposure to different stressors for 2 weeks. For the
