Fair as a percentage of normal using manual muscle testing of knee extensor strength.

We explored the extent to which fair knee extensors might be judged to be weaker than the normal knee extensors of healthy young adults. To obtain quantitative data for normal strength of knee extensors, we recorded knee torque in 20 healthy young subjects using an isokinetic dynamometer, and calculated muscle strength equivalent to fair, including the effect of inertial force, using a rigid body model. The results showed that fair torque as a percentage of actual normal torque at 60 degrees per second was 4.8 ± 1.2% (mean ± standard deviation) among the men and 4.6 ± 1.0% among the women. Thi

The relationship of tremor severity with proximal and distal muscle strength and upper extremity functional skills in older adults with essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Although it is known that muscle strength training is effective in Essential Tremor (ET), it is not known which muscle groups are more affected. AIM: The study was conducted to examine the relationship between tremor severity and proximal and distal muscle strength and upper extremity functional skills in older adults with ET. METHODS: A total of 40 older adults who were diagnosed with ET (mean age of 74.07 ± 4.83 years) and 40 older adults without tremor (mean age of 70.10 ± 4.05 years) were included in the study. Tremor severity was evaluated with the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Tremor R

Sixty six-month follow-up of muscle power and respiratory function in a case with adult-type Pompe disease treated with enzyme replacement therapy.

We report a patient with adult-type Pompe disease treated with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for 5.5 years. We evaluated pulmonary function and muscle strength using 6-minute walk test, manual muscle test, and dynamometer-based measurement. The long-term ERT resulted in a substantial improvement in the pulmonary function and a possible stabilization followed by mild deterioration in muscle power measured by dynamometer and 6-minute walk test. Our data may rationalize the long-term use of ERT for adult-type Pompe disease in terms of maintaining pulmonary function.

Hand Grip Force-Time Curve Indicators Evaluated by Dynamometer: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Handgrip strength (HGS) is an indicator of muscular strength, used in the diagnosis of sarcopenia, undernutrition, and physical frailty as well as recovery. Typically, the maximum HGS value is used; however, recent evidence suggests the exploration of new indicators provided based on the force-time curve to achieve a more comprehensive assessment of muscle function. Therefore, the objective was to identify indicators of the HGS profile beyond maximum HGS, based on force-time curves, and to systematize knowledge about their applications to various types of samples, health issues, an

Chronic stretching and voluntary muscle force.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether muscle force, power, and optimal length were affected by 4 weeks of static or ballistic stretching. Twenty-nine males (age, 18-60 years) performed 4 maximal hip extensions to measure peak torque (PT), rate of torque development (RTD), work (W), and PT angle (PTA). Then, participants completed 4 weeks of static or ballistic flexibility training of the hip extensors followed by repetition of the testing protocol. After training, PT increased 5.3 +/- 19.0% in the static group (SG), 7.8 +/- 12.7% in the ballistic group (BG), and 6.1 +/- 17.9% in th

Validity and reliability of the modified sphygmomanometer test for assessing upper limb and trunk muscle strength in adolescents.

The Modified Sphygmomanometer Test (MST) is a method for assessing muscle strength that offers objective measures similar to those of a portable dynamometer, while also being cost-effective. However, previous studies have not investigated the measurement properties of the MST in adolescents. Thus, the objectives of the study were (1) to examine the concurrent criterion validity, test-retest and interrater reliability of the Modified Sphygmomanometer Test (TMS) for assessing muscle strength in adolescents, (2) to calculate the Standard Error of Measurement (EPM) and the smallest real difference

Validation of a bluetooth-enabled load cell for objective and accessible assessment of lower extremity strength.

High magnitude loading from performing resistance-based exercise has been found to improve tendon strength and reduce symptoms of Achilles tendinopathy (AT) but is difficult to quantify without specialist equipment. Here, we assess the validity and reliability of a novel AT rehabilitation tool (the "PhysViz" system) compared to a "gold-standard" dynamometer for assessing plantarflexion maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC). 41 participants aged 18-60 completed the study. A within-subject test-retest study design was used to examine and compare the validity and reliability of the two

Quantitative measurement of muscle strength in the mouse.

We have designed a special dynamometer for measuring mouse forelimb muscle strength and endurance. The device exploits a mouse's tendency to grasp a horizontal metal bar while suspended by its tail. A threshold value for the magnitude and duration of force that the mouse can exert is obtained by first allowing the animal to grasp the bar and then applying a steadily increasing downward force to the opposite end of a cable to which the mouse attaches. The bar is attached to a force transducer and pen recorder to produce a permanent record of the force produced by the mouse. Test results show th

Intrasession and Intersession Reliability of Neck Retraction Strength Using a Strain Gauge Device.

Neck pain ranks among the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions and is commonly accompanied by altered physical function. With 10.8% of sports-related injuries affecting the head and neck, evaluating neck strength is vital for detecting muscle weakness and monitoring rehabilitation progress. The purpose of this study was to determine the intrasession and intersession reliability of a strain gauge for measuring neck retraction strength in healthy adult men. Ten male participants (age, 22.7 [2.6] y; body mass, 90.8 [13.3] kg; height, 184.2 [7.1] cm) completed a neck retraction isometric test

Between-Session Reliability of Field-Based Assessments of Isometric Neck Strength.

The reliability of the fixed-frame dynamometer for measuring isometric neck strength is established, but with limited field-based applications. This study aimed to establish the inter- and intra-session reliability of the peak force for neck flexors, extensors, and side flexors using the VALD ForceFrame and DynaMo and the force-time characteristics in the quadruped position (ForceFrame). Twenty-seven recreationally active males performed three repetitions of isometric neck flexion, extension, and side flexion over two sessions in random order using the VALD ForceFrame and DynaMo. Both devices

Cut-off points for knee extension strength: identifying muscle weakness in older adults.

PURPOSE: Generalized muscle weakness is the primary characteristic of sarcopenia. Handgrip strength (HGS) is widely employed to detect muscle weakness. However, knee extension strength (KES) declines much earlier and more pronounced than HGS, and there is a stronger correlation between KES and functional performance. Therefore, KES may be a more appropriate proxy for identifying muscle weakness compared to HGS. The purpose of this review was to clarify the KES measurement towards a standardized approach and summarize the cut-off points for KES. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in We

Strength Testing in Motor Neuron Diseases.

Loss of muscle strength is a cardinal feature of all motor neuron diseases. Functional loss over time, including respiratory dysfunction, inability to ambulate, loss of ability to perform activities of daily living, and others are due, in large part, to decline in strength. Thus, the accurate measurement of limb muscle strength is essential in therapeutic trials to best understand the impact of therapy on vital function. While qualitative strength measurements show declines over time, the lack of reproducibility and linearity of measurement make qualitative techniques inadequate. A variety of

Validity and Reliability of Handheld Dynamometry to Assess Isometric Hamstrings and Quadriceps Strength at Varying Muscle Lengths.

CONTEXT: The hamstrings are the most commonly injured muscle in sports and are especially injury prone in lengthened positions. Measuring knee muscle strength in such positions could be relevant to establish injury risk. Handheld dynamometry has been shown to be a valid, reliable, and practical tool to measure isometric muscle strength clinically. The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the assessment of isometric knee muscle strength with a handheld dynamometer (HHD) at various muscle lengths, by modifying the hip and knee angles during testing. DESIGN: Concurrent

Angle-torque relationship and muscular activity patterns during concentric contractions with a novel variable cam system.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the angle -torque relationship requires recognizing that torque can differ across contraction modes. This study aimed to analyze the performance of the Variable Moment Arm Cam® (VMAC®) by examining torque production and muscle activation during concentric leg extension contractions across the full range of motion (ROM) (100°-0°) and comparing them with those obtained using an isokinetic dynamometer.
