Exciton lifetime tuning by changing the plasmon field orientation with respect to the exciton transition moment direction: CdTe-Au core-shell nanorods.

We studied the anisotropy of the influence of plasmonic fields, arising from the optical excitation of a gold nanoshell plasmon absorption at 770 nm, on the lifetime of the bandgap state of the CdTe core in vertically aligned CdTe-Au core-shell nanorods. The previously observed decrease in the lifetime was studied as a function of the tilt angle between the long axis of the nanorod and the electric field polarization direction of the plasmon inducing exciting light. It is observed that the strongest enhancement to the exciton relaxation rate occurs when the two axes are parallel to one another

Neutrophil Extracellular Trap-Mimetic DNA Nets Enable Concurrent Bacteria-Targeted Eradication and Toxin Neutralization.

Current antibacterial therapies often suffer from limited bacterial selectivity, host-cell toxicity, and inflammation triggered by toxin release during bacterial killing. Here, we report a neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs)-mimetic, dopamine-incorporated DNA net, termed DANet-DA, enabling targeted bacterial eradication and concurrent toxin neutralization. Inspired by the trap-kill-neutralize function of NETs, DANet-DA selectively captures and traps bacteria, followed by in situ catalytic formation of polydopamine nanoshells on the trapped bacteria. This process enables efficient phototherma

A molecular probe carrying anti-tropomyosin 4 for early diagnosis of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.

In vivo imaging of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury remains an important challenge. We injected porous Ag/Au@SiO2 bimetallic hollow nanoshells carrying anti-tropomyosin 4 as a molecular probe into mice with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury and observed microvascular changes in the brain using photoacoustic imaging with ultrasonography. At each measured time point, the total photoacoustic signal was significantly higher on the affected side than on the healthy side. Twelve hours after reperfusion, cerebral perfusion on the affected side increased, cerebrovascular injury worsened, and an

Photothermal therapeutic ability of copper open-shell nanostructures that are effective in the second biological transparency window based on symmetry breaking-induced plasmonic properties.

In this study, a photothermal therapy agent that works efficiently in the second biological transparency window was developed based on the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance of symmetry-broken open-shell nanostructures of low-cost Cu (CuOSNs). The strong LSP resonance and superior photothermal conversion ability in the second biological transparency window were achieved by generating the dipolar bonding mode due to the plasmon hybridization between the nanoshell dipole and the nanohole dipole at the opening edge in CuOSNs derived from the symmetry breaking of a Cu nanoshell. Oxidative d

A multifunctional nanozyme integrating panoptosis induction and T-cell metabolic reprogramming to augment the efficacy of PD-1 inhibitors.

Cancer remains a major global health burden due to its high rates of recurrence and resistance to conventional therapies. Although PD-L1/PD-1 immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have emerged as promising treatments by restoring T cell function and enhancing anti-tumor immunity, their efficacy is often limited by immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (ITM) and metabolic adaptations that impair T cell activity. To address these challenges, we developed a novel intelligent drug delivery platform that integrates PANoptosis induction, metabolic modulation and targeted nanotherapy. Specifically,

Noble metals on the nanoscale: optical and photothermal properties and some applications in imaging, sensing, biology, and medicine.

Noble metal nanostructures attract much interest because of their unique properties, including large optical field enhancements resulting in the strong scattering and absorption of light. The enhancement in the optical and photothermal properties of noble metal nanoparticles arises from resonant oscillation of their free electrons in the presence of light, also known as localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The plasmon resonance can either radiate light (Mie scattering), a process that finds great utility in optical and imaging fields, or be rapidly converted to heat (absorption); the la

The electronic structure of CdSe/CdS core/shell seeded nanorods: type-I or quasi-type-II?

The electronic structure of CdSe/CdS core/shell seeded nanorods of experimentally relevant size is studied using a combination of molecular dynamics and semiempirical pseudopotential techniques with the aim to address the transition from type-I to a quasi-type-II band alignment. The hole is found to be localized in the core region regardless of its size. The overlap of the electron density with the core region depends markedly on the size of the CdSe core. For small cores, we observe little overlap, consistent with type-II behavior. For large cores, significant core-overlap of a number of exci

A cellular Trojan Horse for delivery of therapeutic nanoparticles into tumors.

Destruction of hypoxic regions within tumors, virtually inaccessible to cancer therapies, may well prevent malignant progression. The tumor's recruitment of monocytes into these regions may be exploited for nanoparticle-based delivery. Monocytes containing therapeutic nanoparticles could serve as "Trojan Horses" for nanoparticle transport into these tumor regions. Here we report the demonstration of several key steps toward this therapeutic strategy: phagocytosis of Au nanoshells, and photoinduced cell death of monocytes/macrophages as isolates and within tumor spheroids.

Self-Cascade of ROS/Glucose-Scavenging Immunomodulatory Hydrogels for Programmed Therapeutics of Infected Diabetic Ulcers via Nrf2/NF-κB Pathway.

Diabetic ulcers (DUs) are characterized by a microenvironment with high oxidative stress, high blood glucose levels, and recalcitrant bacterial infections. This microenvironment is accompanied by long-term suppression of endogenous antioxidant systems, which makes their clinical management extremely challenging. To address this issue, a hybridized novel gold-palladium (AuPd) nanoshell of the injectable/injectable hydrogel system UiO/AuPdshells/BNN6/PEG@Gel (UAPsBP@Gel) is developed. The system is capable of acting as a nitric oxide (NO) reactor utilizing synergistic therapy that harnesses NIR-

Impact of Bulk Nanobubble Water on a TiO2 Solid Surface: A Case Study for Medical Implants.

In the field of medical implants, enhancing the wettability of artificial surfaces is crucial for improving biocompatibility. This study investigates the potential of ozone nanobubble water, an aqueous solution known for its strong oxidizing and sterilizing properties, to modify the surface of titanium dental implants. By immersing the implants in ozone nanobubble water for ∼10 min, we observed a significant transformation of their surface characteristics. Implant surfaces that had become hydrophobic over time, likely due to organic contaminants, became superhydrophilic, exhibiting a contact a

Metal-Based Nanoparticles for Cardiovascular Diseases.

Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death and disability. While there are many therapeutic alternatives available for the management of CVDs, the majority of classic therapeutic strategies were found to be ineffective at stopping or significantly/additionally slowing the progression of these diseases, or they had unfavorable side effects. Numerous metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) have been created to overcome these limitations, demonstrating encouraging possibilities in the treatment of CVDs due to advancements in nanotechnology. Metallic nanomaterials, including g

Cancer Cell Membrane-Wrapped Nanoparticles for Photothermal Therapy and Photoacoustic Imaging of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is one of the most aggressive and challenging subtypes of breast cancer to treat, primarily due to a lack of targeted therapies. Photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as a promising noninvasive strategy, wherein systemically administered light-responsive nanoparticles accumulate at the tumor site and convert externally applied near-infrared light into heat, culminating in tumor ablation. Nonetheless, the clinical application of PTT is impeded by insufficient nanoparticle accumulation within tumors. We present the development of silica core/gold shell nanos

Sensitivity of metal nanoparticle surface plasmon resonance to the dielectric environment.

Electrodynamic simulations of gold nanoparticle spectra were used to investigate the sensitivity of localized surface plasmon band position to the refractive index, n, of the medium for nanoparticles of various shapes and nanoshells of various structures. Among single-component nanoparticles less than 130 nm in size, sensitivities of dipole resonance positions to bulk refractive index are found to depend only upon the wavelength of the resonance and the dielectric properties of the metal and the medium. Among particle plasmons that peak in the frequency range where the real part of the metal d

Plasmon field effects on the nonradiative relaxation of hot electrons in an electronically quantized system: CdTe-Au core-shell nanowires.

The intense electromagnetic fields of plasmonic nanoparticles, resulting from the excitation of their localized surface plasmon oscillations, are known to enhance radiative processes. Their effect on the nonradiative electronic processes, however, is not as well-documented. Here, we report on the enhancement of the nonradiative electronic relaxation rates in CdTe nanowires upon the addition of a thin gold nanoshell, especially at excitation energies overlapping with those of the surface plasmon oscillations. Some possible mechanisms by which localized surface plasmon fields can enhance nonradi

Treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma using anti-HER2 immunonanoshells.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, oral squamous cell carcinoma (potentially mediated by HER2) is recognized as the most commonly occurring malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity. Anti-HER2 nanobodies conjugated to gold-silica nanoshells and used as photothermal treatment for oral squamous cell carcinoma may provide a novel therapeutic alternative to current treatment for this disease. METHODS: KB epithelial or HeLaS3 cell cultures (controls) were exposed to these immunonanoshells, and plasmon resonance electron initiation specific to gold was employed to burn the tumor cells. RESULTS: Following this tre

Cocktail strategy-based nanomedicine: A synergistic cascade of starvation, NIR-II photothermal, and gas therapy for enhanced tumor immunotherapy.

Immunotherapy has emerged as a highly promising strategy in the realm of cancer treatment, wherein immunogenic cell death (ICD) is considered a potential trigger for anti-tumor immunity by inducing adaptive immunity to dying cell antigens. This process is often accompanied by the exposure, active secretion, or passive release of a large number of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), which activate dendritic cells (DCs) and enhance their antigen-presenting capacity. Subsequently, it promotes the recruitment and activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes, ultimately leading to tumor growth i

Target-induced nanocatalyst deactivation facilitated by core@shell nanostructures for signal-amplified headspace-colorimetric assay of dissolved hydrogen sulfide.

Colorimetric assay platforms for dissolved hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have been developed for more than 100 years, but most still suffer from relatively low sensitivity. One promising route out of this predicament relies on the design of efficient signal amplification methods. Herein, we rationally designed an unprecedented H2S-induced deactivation of (gold core)@(ultrathin platinum shell) nanocatalysts (Au@TPt-NCs) as a highly efficient signal amplification method for ultrasensitive headspace-colorimetric assay of dissolved H2S. Upon target introduction, Au@TPt-NCs were deactivated to different d

Reducing Blinking in Small Core-Multishell Quantum Dots by Carefully Balancing Confinement Potential and Induced Lattice Strain: The "Goldilocks" Effect.

Currently, the most common way to reduce blinking in quantum dots (QDs) is accomplished by using very thick and/or perfectly crystalline CdS shells on CdSe cores. Ideally, a nontoxic material such as ZnS is preferred to be the outer material in order to reduce environmental and cytotoxic effects. Blinking suppression with multishell configurations of CdS and ZnS has been reported only for "giant" QDs of 15 nm or more. One of the main reasons for the limited progress is that the role that interfacial trap states play in blinking in these systems is not very well understood. Here, we show a "Gol
