Effectiveness and Safety of an Intracameral Injection of Cefuroxime for the Prevention of Endophthalmitis After Cataract Surgery With or Without Perioperative Capsular Rupture.

IMPORTANCE: Postoperative endophthalmitis (POE) often results in severe visual impairment. In clinical studies, an intracameral cefuroxime injection at the end of surgery was found to be effective at reducing the incidence of POE. Two important issues are the retinal safety of cefuroxime and its use for patients with perioperative capsular rupture where the risk of POE is dramatically increased. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness and retinal safety of an intracameral injection of cefuroxime sodium for the prevention of POE and its possible use in cases of a perioperative capsular rupture

Surgical techniques for complicated cataracts: managing dense or white cataracts.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent advances in the surgical management of dense white cataracts, focusing on preoperative assessment, biometry, capsulotomy techniques, phacoemulsification systems, and surgical outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) biometers now achieve nearly universal axial length measurements even in dense lenses, improving refractive predictability. Anterior segment OCT and Scheimpflug imaging facilitate detection of intralenticular fluid pockets and capsular thinning, guiding decompression strategies to prevent anterior capsule tea

Isolated posterior capsule rupture secondary to blunt ocular trauma: Case presentation and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: An isolated posterior capsule rupture (PCR) is a rare complication associated with traumatic cataracts. We report our findings in three cases of traumatic cataracts with isolated PCR caused by blunt ocular trauma. PRESENTATION OF CASES: Case 1: A 1.5-year-old boy was examined after his parents noticed that the center of the pupil of the left eye was white. The mother reported that the boy had fallen and bruised his left forehead 4 months earlier. Case 2: An 18-year-old boy had a traumatic cataract that developed one month after a blow to his eye. Case 3: A 13-year-old boy was tr

Risk factors for retinal detachment after cataract surgery. A population-based case-control study.

PURPOSE: Previous analyses of Medicare claims data, as well as clinical series, have suggested that performance of neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy after extracapsular cataract surgery increases significantly the risk of retinal detachment. However, methodologic problems with previous research limit the strength of conclusions that can be drawn from these earlier studies. This study was designed to resolve those methodological limitations while using a population-based approach for assessment of the independent association between the performance of Nd:YAG laser posterior cap
