Racism as a Determinant of Health: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Despite a growing body of epidemiological evidence in recent years documenting the health impacts of racism, the cumulative evidence base has yet to be synthesized in a comprehensive meta-analysis focused specifically on racism as a determinant of health. This meta-analysis reviewed the literature focusing on the relationship between reported racism and mental and physical health outcomes. Data from 293 studies reported in 333 articles published between 1983 and 2013, and conducted predominately in the U.S., were analysed using random effects models and mean weighted effect sizes. Racism was a

German science and black racism--roots of the Nazi Holocaust.

The Nazi's cornerstone precept of "racial hygiene" gave birth to their policy of "racial cleansing" that led to the murders of millions. It was developed by German physicians and scientists in the late 19th century and is rooted in the period's Social Darwinism that placed blacks at the bottom of the racial ladder. This program was first manifested in the near-extermination of the African Herero people during the German colonial period. After WWI, the fear among the German populace that occupying African troops and their Afro-German children would lead to "bastardization" of the German people

Racism, the National Health Service, and the health of black people.

Racism has been and is central to an understanding of the health of black people in Britain. Black people have played and are playing a central role in the National Health Service (NHS). Their role is, however, shaped by racism. Their experiences as consumers of the NHS are also shaped by racism--in terms of their treatment for both physical and mental health problems. In addition, their specific health problems such as sickle cell anemia have not received the attention they deserve. The NHS has become part of the internal control system of the British racist immigration system. The cuts in th

Structural racism and its pathways to asthma and atopic dermatitis.

Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people in the United States experience a disproportionate burden of asthma and atopic dermatitis. The study of these disease disparities has focused on proximal socioenvironmental exposures and on the biomechanistic (including genetic) differences between racial and ethnic groups. Although biomedical research in allergy and immunology stands to benefit from the inclusion of diverse study populations, the narrow focus on biologic mechanisms disregards the complexity of interactions across biologic and structural factors, including the effects of structural racism.

¿Qué es racismo?: awareness of racism and discrimination in Ecuador.

In the national consciousness, Ecuador is a mestizo nation. However, it is also an ethnically diverse nation with sizable minorities of indigenous and Afrodescended peoples. In national surveys, there is also a considerable minority who self-identify as blanco (white). Although there is strong evidence of continuing discrimination and prejudice toward both indigenous and Afro-descended peoples, there is little public discussion or political action addressing such issues. The emergence of a powerful and resilient indigenous movement in the late 1980s gained international interest and acclaim in

Intersectional characterization of emergency department (ED) staff experiences of racism: a survey of ED healthcare workers for the Disrupting Racism in Emergency Medicine (DRiEM) Investigators.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of racism on patient outcomes in Emergency Medicine has been examined but there have been few studies exploring the experiences of racism in health care workers. This survey aims to explore the experience of racism by interdisciplinary staff in a tertiary ED. By characterizing the staff experience of racism in the ED, we hope to inform the design of strategies to disrupt racism and ultimately improve the health and wellness of both staff and patients. METHODS: We conducted a self-administered, cross-sectional survey to explore the reported experience of racism by heal

Asian American client perspectives on racism-related discussions in psychotherapy.

This study examined how Asian American clients experience and discuss racism-related events in psychotherapy and how therapist responses shape therapeutic outcomes. Eleven Asian American adults who had discussed at least one racism-related incident in therapy completed semistructured interviews, recounting of the racist incident in therapy and the aftermath of those conversations. Interviews were analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research and linguistic analysis of emotion-word usage. Participants described a range of direct and vicarious racism experiences, most commonly workplace or scho

Medical Learner Perspectives on Restorative Practices to Address Medical Racism.

IMPORTANCE: The use of restorative practices may be an alternative approach to responding to patients and families harmed by medical racism. Little research has explored its implementation in health care settings or the perspectives of residents and fellows (ie, medical learners) regarding its use in academic clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: To elicit perspectives from medical learners on using restorative practices to address patient and family concerns about racism and other identity-based harms in the health care context. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative study consisted of

Classes of Racism and Suicide Risk Among Black Emerging Adults.

This cross-sectional study investigates the relationship between three distinct types of racism-based experiences (i.e. hostile, aversive-hostile, and avoidant) and suicide risk among Black emerging adults. Computer assisted surveys were administered to a sample of 300 Black emerging adult college students. Increased exposure to hostile racism was linked to higher risk of suicidal ideation and attempts, whereas an increase in exposure to aversive-hostile racism was associated with a decreased likelihood of experiencing suicidal ideation. These findings underscore the complex and multifaceted n

OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between county-level structural racism indicators and the odds of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) in New York State. DESIGN: We merged individual-level hospitalization data from the New York State Department of Health Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) with county-level data from the American Community Survey and the Vera Institute of Justice from 2011 to 2013 (n = 244 854). Racism and Oral Health Outcomes among Pregnant Canadian Aboriginal Women.

This study assessed links between racism and oral health outcomes among pregnant Canadian Aboriginal women. Baseline data were analyzed for 541 First Nations (94.6%) and Métis (5.4%) women in an early childhood caries preventive trial conducted in urban and on-reserve communities in Ontario and Manitoba. One-third of participants experienced racism in the past year determined by the Measure of Indigenous Racism Experience. In logistic regressions, outcomes significantly associated with incidents of racism included: wearing dentures, off-reserve dental care, asked to pay for dental services, pe

Developing Tools to Report Racism in Maternal Health for the CDC Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA): Findings from the MMRIA Racism & Discrimination Working Group.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this report from the field is to describe the process by which an multidisciplinary workgroup, selected by the CDC Foundation in partnership with maternal health experts, developed a definition of racism that would be specifically appropriate for inclusion on the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) form. DESCRIPTION: In the United States Black women are nearly 4 times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death. Recent evidence points to racism as a fundamental cause of this inequity. Furthermore, the CDC reports that 3 of 5 pregnancy rela

"Drug Use with Racism…The Reason I Wanted to Do This Study": Perceptions of Race and Racism's Impact on Drug Use among Black Americans Using Opioids.

Background: Several studies link racism with drug use disparities among systemically marginalized populations. However, few invite Black Americans to discuss how they perceive racism's impact on their drug use. Objectives: To examine qualitative accounts from N=40 Black adults reporting non-medical prescription opioid use on their experiences of racism and drug use. Results: A deductive structural tabular thematic analysis informed by Jones's (2000) levels of racism resulted in two themes: (a) Experiences of Racism (subthemes: Denying Experiences of Racism and Endorsing Experiences of Racism)

Racism in Inuit experiences in healthcare: findings from an environmental scan.

While the category of "race" has no scientific foundation, race and subsequent racism continue to be determinants of access to health for Indigenous communities globally, including for Inuit in Canada. This scan raised concerns from community members voicing racial inequities in healthcare. The aim of this review was to scan Canadian Inuit experiences of racism in healthcare. To date, no such work has been done, and contemporary Inuit experiences of racism in the healthcare context have not been systematically documented. We hope that this review will serve as a foundation for scholars, policy

Using virtual reality simulation to address racism in a healthcare setting.

Racism continues to plague Western societies' institutions, including the healthcare system. Despite the evidence of racism's negative impacts on healthcare providers, administrators, patients, and families, healthcare workers report hesitancy in taking action to address racism in the workplace. Simulation, with its experiential pedagogy and foundation in psychological safety, may be an educational tool to support practical training. Guided by a social cognitive view of regulation of learning, we piloted virtual reality (VR) modules focused on addressing bias, privilege, and microaggressions.
