Perceived risk of colorectal cancer: sources of risk judgments.

Perceived risk of disease plays a key role in health behaviors, making it an important issue for cancer-preventive behavior research. This study describes studies using complimentary methodologies to investigate the determinants of perceived risk of developing colorectal cancer. In study 1, questionnaires were mailed to a community sample of 1,056 adults ages 45 to 65 years. They assessed risk factors for colorectal cancer and perceived risk of colorectal cancer and asked respondents to explain why they had rated their risk as they had. Consistent with previous studies, risk factors for colore

Children at risk: II. Risk factors and clinic utilization.

Using a strategy involving multiple raters and instruments, the authors compared 134 clinic subjects with controls matched on sex, age, and socioeconomic status to determine how various risk factors are related to clinic utilization apart from their effects on children's symptomatology. Parental psychopathology, family size, and marital status were most predictive of children's symptom levels, while stress levels, family size, and marital status were most predictive of clinic utilization. Although children's total symptom levels explained 27.6% of the variance in clinic utilization, other fact

High-Risk ECG in Syncope: High Risk or Overstated?

Proposed emergency department approach to syncope. After confirming true syncope and excluding immediately apparent diagnoses, assessment focuses on identifying patients at high risk of clinically significant bradyarrhythmia or other specific cardiac conditions requiring hospital admission, while avoiding unnecessary admission for isolated non-specific ECG abnormalities. The proposed recommendations and algorithm reflect the authors' interpretation of the available evidence and are intended to complement current ESC recommendations. Although informed by observational studies, they remain explo

Vehicle group risk modeling based on risk propagation mechanism.

Surrogate safety measures (SSMs) have been widely used for traffic risk assessment. However, most existing approaches remain focused on the risk state of individual vehicles, providing limited representation of the relational and propagative nature of risk in highly interactive traffic environments. In such environments, the risk observed at one vehicle may reflect the cascading propagation of disturbances through a vehicle group. To address this limitation, this study proposes a novel framework for vehicle group risk modeling based on the perspective of risk propagation. First, Modified Time

Epidemiology of cardiovascular risk factors: Non-behavioural risk factors.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, and the second leading cause in France. Among the modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, metabolic diseases (hypertension, low-density lipoprotein hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes and obesity) play a major role, contributing to the development and progression of atherosclerosis. This review summarizes the latest epidemiological data available at a national level. In 2015, the prevalence among adults aged 18-74years was 17.2% for obesity, 7.4% for diabetes, 30.6% for hypertension, 23.3% for low-density lipoprotein hypercholesterola

A polygenic risk score for multiple myeloma risk prediction.

There is overwhelming epidemiologic evidence that the risk of multiple myeloma (MM) has a solid genetic background. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 23 risk loci that contribute to the genetic susceptibility of MM, but have low individual penetrance. Combining the SNPs in a polygenic risk score (PRS) is a possible approach to improve their usefulness. Using 2361 MM cases and 1415 controls from the International Multiple Myeloma rESEarch (IMMEnSE) consortium, we computed a weighted and an unweighted PRS. We observed associations with MM risk with OR = 3.44, 95% CI 2.53-4.6

Novel Risk Markers and Risk Assessments for Cardiovascular Disease.

The use of risk markers has transformed cardiovascular medicine, exemplified by the routine assessment of troponin, for both diagnosis and assessment of prognosis in patients with chest pain. Clinical risk factors form the basis for risk assessment of cardiovascular disease and the addition of biochemical, cellular, and imaging parameters offers further refinement. Identifying novel risk factors may allow greater risk stratification and a steady, but gradual progression toward precision medicine. Indeed, the generation of data in this area of research is explosive and when combined with new te

New risk factors for atherosclerosis and patient risk assessment.

Advances in our understanding of the ways in which the traditional cardiovascular risk factors, including standard lipid (eg, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) and nonlipid (eg, hypertension) risk factors, interact to initiate atherosclerosis and promote the development of cardiovascular disease have enhanced our ability to assess risk in the individual patient. In addition, the ongoing identification and understanding of so-called novel risk factors may further improve our ability to predict future risk when these are included al

Radiation therapy in pregnancy: risk calculation and risk minimization.

The benefits of radiation therapy (RT) as part of a treatment regimen for cancer must be weighed against the potential risk of harm to the patient and in the pregnant patient, the risk to the developing fetus. Information necessary for determining the potential effects of RT on the developing fetus include the gestational age, absorbed fetal dose-equivalent, and dose-rate. The risk periods in humans for RT-induced prenatal or neonatal death, congenital anomalies, severe mental retardation (SMR), temporary (TGR) or permanent growth retardation (PGR), carcinogenesis, sterility, and germ cell mut

Relative excess risk: an alternative measure of comparative risk.

The proverbial relative risk may not always be the most suitable measure to compare the risk of two exposures, since it inherently includes a background effect. An alternative comparative measure, the relative excess risk, is introduced. It applies to situations in which an "unexposed" reference group is included in addition to the two exposures under evaluation. This comparative measure is based solely on the component of risk due to the exposures, since it removes the background risk. Estimators of the relative excess risk are presented, along with formulas for the confidence intervals under

Risk rates for factors placing children visually at risk.

Data from 7569 maternal and child health histories and the vision assessment records of the children were analyzed to determine if exposure to various "risk factors" increased prevalence of ocular anomalies in those children who were exposed. The results indicate higher attributable risk (AR) and relative risk (RR) rates for a number of the factors studied including: maternal use of cigarettes, being born to mothers 19 years and younger at the time of the child's birth, having rubella or mumps between birth and 6 years of age, being male, and other factors. Moderate use of alcohol did not appe

Perceived HIV risk as a predictor of sexual risk behaviors and discrimination among high-risk women.

HIV risk perception and discrimination are important determinants of HIV prevention among vulnerable populations. Using Detroit's 2016 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) Survey, we evaluated demographic variables, risk behaviors, and perception of HIV stigma and discrimination stratified by perceived HIV risk (high, medium, low) in a sample of high-risk women. Significant variables were identified using Pearson Chi-squared tests and one-way analysis of variance tests. Among 541 females surveyed, 93.0% were black and 87.7% lived in poverty. Women's poverty (p = .010), employment (p = .

The predictive validity of the family risk survey and child risk survey for identifying persistent firesetting risk.

Young firesetter behavior poses significant risks to individuals and communities. Intervention is important to mitigate youth firesetting, and treatment needs vary depending on underlying motives. Effective screening of persistent firesetter risk to inform intervention approach is critical to ensure appropriate matching of risk and needs. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of the child risk survey (CRS) and family risk survey (FRS) for predicting persistent firesetting risk, and subsequent triaging of cases toward the appropriate treatment.
