PURPOSE: Genetic aspects of male subfertility and the novelty of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) as a new technique can influence the development of zygotes and children born after ICSI. Therefore, we evaluated the outcome of ICSI compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF).
METHODS: Data from medical records of 233 total pregnancies and the follow-up of 132 children born after IVF and 120 after ICSI were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: No differences were found between ICSI and IVF for early embryonic development and obstetric outcome. In both groups the rate of women undergoing pre

The microinjection of completely immotile spermatozoa may impair the outcome of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Eleven couples underwent an initial ICSI cycle with 100% immotile freshly ejaculated spermatozoa. Two-pronuclear fertilization ensued in 18 of 145 (12.4%) successfully injected oocytes. None of these cycles resulted in a pregnancy. Nine couples underwent ICSI in subsequent cycles (n = 16). Ejaculated spermatozoa were injected in 15 cycles and testicular spermatozoa in one cycle. In 10 of the 15 cycles, motile spermatozoa were available at the time of injection. Motile testic

Intracytoplasmatic sperm injection (ICSI) has improved the success rate in treating severe male infertility. The method may now be used with sperm from the epididymis and testis. This article summarizes our knowledge on genetic factors affecting male gamete formation or function. Infertile men with severe impairment of spermatogenesis showed a higher than normal incidence of chromosomal abnormalities and 10-20% had microdeletion, in the Y-chromosome. About 75% of males with congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens (CBAVD) have mutations in the cystic fibrosis trans-membrane conductance reg

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The detailed assessment of sperm morphology is important in the semen of infertile men because there is a low proportion of normal spermatozoa. One of the parameters of such sperm morphology is the acrosome, and its effect on assisted reproductive outcomes is controversial. This study was undertaken to evaluate the association between different forms of acrosome on the chromatin status and the assisted reproductive outcomes.
METHODS: A total of 1587 unstained sperms from 514 infertile men were captured and analyzed for different acrosome forms (normal, large, small, s

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a technique that directly injects a single sperm into the cytoplasm of mature oocytes. Here, we explored the safety of single-sperm cryopreservation applied in ICSI. This retrospective study enrolled 186 couples undergoing ICSI-assisted pregnancy. Subjects were allocated to the fresh sperm (group A)/single-sperm cryopreservation (group B) groups based on sperm type, with their clinical baseline/pathological data documented. We used ICSI-compliant sperm for subsequent in vitro fertilization and followed up on all subjects. The recovery rate/cryosurviva

Sperm morphology significantly influences the fertilization capacity of male germ cells. Morphological abnormalities are frequently associated with an overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to further sperm damage and subsequent infertility. This case study examines a couple facing infertility, with male factor infertility identified as the primary issue, characterized by teratozoospermia and a high DNA fragmentation index (DFI). The objective was to assess the efficacy of zeta potential (ZP) as a sperm sorting technique for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in patients

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an important technique in male infertility treatment. Currently, sperm selection for ICSI in human assisted reproductive technology (ART) is subjective, based on a visual assessment by the operator. Therefore, it is desirable to develop methods that can objectively provide an accurate assessment of the shape and size of sperm heads that use low-magnification microscopy available in most standard fertility clinics. Recent studies have shown a correlation between sperm head size and shape and chromosomal abnormalities, and fertilization rate, and variou

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the present multicenter study was to investigate whether an artificial insemination with donor sperm (AID) procedure after intra-couple intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) failure offers a significant chance of pregnancy and to identify prognostic factors for pregnancy after an AID procedure. An eleven-year retrospective multicenter study was conducted among 13 Centre d'Etude et de Conservation des Oeufs et du Sperme (CECOS) centers. A total of 319 couples having undergone an AID procedure after intra-conjugal ICSI failure were included in this study; a total of

The body of evidence supports the negative impact of increased sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) on natural fertility as well as assisted reproduction conditions. High SDF has been correlated with low pregnancy and delivery rates following intrauterine insemination. Also, high SDF is accused of reducing the rates of fertilization, implantation, pregnancy, and live birth following in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Despite no impact of high SDF on fertilization or pregnancy rates following intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), it has been correlated with poor embryo quality and a higher risk of misca

INTRODUCTION: Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection (IMSI) is one of the sperm selection techniques used for assisted reproduction which has been applied for a variety of indications including previously failed fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). A Cochrane review1 found no difference in outcomes between either modality of sperm selection. Since the Cochrane review was published there have been a further two randomized controlled trials comparing IMSI and ICSI. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare IMSI with ICSI as insemination me

Recent studies have shown that the injection of spermatid cells into the human oocyte can result in normal fertilization, embryo development and even delivery of live, healthy offspring. In our study, 23 azoospermic cases with severe spermatogenetic defects in their testicular biopsy are presented. The serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations and histopathological results of these males have been documented and compared in terms of fertilization and embryo development. The mean FSH value of the azoospermic males was 15.8 +/- 2.3 mIU/l, ranging from 1.6 to 39 mIU/l. Elongated spe
