OBJECTIVES: To evaluate serum levels of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), autoantibodies against cardiac troponin (cTnAAbs) and natriuretic peptides during the treatment protocol in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS).
METHODS: In a prospective study, we had 18 consecutive children with HLHS, for whom serum samples were analysed before the Norwood operation, before the bidirectional Glenn (BDG) operation, at the age of one year and before total cavo-pulmonary connection (TCPC). In addition, we performed a cross-sectional study in 22 children examined before TCPC. Controls comprised

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations in cardiac sarcomeric proteins. Troponin I (TNNI3) and troponin T (TNNT2) are important parts of the sarcomere in heart muscle, and mutations in their genes are responsible for development of HCM. The prevalence of mutations in these two genes is low; hence, the data on clinical outcome are scarce. Yet, some of these mutations were shown to be malignant with a high incidence of sudden death. Here, we describe the disease course in three families affected with TNNI3 and one family with TNNT2 gene mutations.

BACKGROUND: Careful interpretation of discordant results in high-sensitivity troponin measurements is necessary in cases of suspect immunoassay interferences. We describe several procedures taken in a case of a polymorbid patient with chest pain, without clear evidence of myocardial necrosis and with increased high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT). We checked the Vafaie's algorithm for the evaluation of suspect interference in troponin measurements.
METHODS: We conducted a case report analysis, additional measurements, a dilution test and pretreatment of plasma with blocking agents.

Elevated cardiac troponin I (cTnI), a myocardial damage biomarker, has been reported in cord blood of neonates delivered vaginally or by cesarean section. Although the neonatal peak likely reflects the physiological adjustment to extrauterine life, a better understanding of serial prepartum changes is required to determine physiological causes of fetal cTnI release. We longitudinally sampled eight healthy lambs (20 days before spontaneous birth to 5 days postnatal), and from three fetuses receiving intravenous IGF-1. Samples were collected into heparin, and the plasma was stored at -80°C for l

OBJECTIVES: Troponin I has been suggested as a more specific diagnostic biomarker for myocardial involvement in systemic sclerosis than the frequently used troponin T. The aim of this study is to evaluate the additive value of troponin I to detect myocardial involvement in systemic sclerosis. To this end, we evaluated the association between troponin I levels and myocardial involvement in systemic sclerosis patients.
METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was performed, including 20 healthy controls and four groups of each 20 systemic sclerosis patients from the Leiden Combined Care i

BACKGROUND: High-sensitivity Troponin I (hs-cTnI) has largely replaced conventional troponin assays in an effort to improve detection of myocardial infarction. However, the mean displacement of hs-cTnI following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and the optimal threshold to detect perioperative myocardial infarction (MI) is unclear. Our objective is to describe mean hs-cTnI values at 6-12 h post-CABG and to determine the highest specificity while maintaining 100% sensitivity hs-cTnI cut-off values for diagnosis of perioperative or type-5 MI.
METHODS: Between 2016 and 2018, 374 patients unde

BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponins are routinely used as markers of myocardial damage. Originally, they were only intended for use in diagnosing acute coronary syndromes; however, we now know that raised serum troponin levels are not always caused by ischemia. There are many other clinical conditions that cause damage to cardiomyocytes, leading to raised levels of troponin. However, the specificity of cardiac troponins towards the myocardium is absolute. Our work focuses on mechanical damage to the myocardium and on monitoring the factors that raise the levels of cardiospecific markers after primo-

BACKGROUND: The relationship of routine postoperative troponin I (TnI) monitoring in kidney transplant recipients and in-hospital myocardial infarction (MI) is not known.
METHODS: This observational study evaluated the prevalence of abnormal postoperative TnI (Ortho Clinical Diagnostics assay) in 376 consecutive kidney or kidney/pancreas transplant recipients. In-hospital MI was adjudicated using the universal definition. Rates of death and coronary revascularizations at 1 year were studied. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of abnormal TnI.

We identified IgG reactive with human cardiac troponin-I (cTnI) in plasma and serum samples (N = 1930) from normal blood donors, and in sample cohorts characterized on the basis of clinical biomarkers associated with cardiac, infectious, and autoimmune diseases. cTnI and brain natriuretic peptide were the biomarkers chosen to reflect myocyte damage or left ventricular dysfunction, respectively. The infectious disease cohorts were serologically positive for antibodies to hepatitis B (natural infection), hepatitis C virus, and Chagas (i.e., T.cruzi). The autoimmune cohorts were represented by sa

UNLABELLED: Platelet activation as a result of atheromatous plaque rupture in ischaemic heart disease can be detected by assesses plasma concentration of beta-thromboglobulin (beta-TG) and indirectly by changes in platelet counts (PLT). At the same time myocardial ischaemia and local destruction of cardiomyocyte leads to the increase troponin I concentration. The aim of this study was an evaluation of correlation between markers of platelet activation in vivo (beta-TG and PLT) and the level of troponin I in patients with unstable angina.

Elevated cardiac troponin I (cTnI) levels in patients hospitalized with chest pain often lead to a diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (MI) or unstable angina. However, as we describe in this review, this finding may occur in other conditions, leading to an incorrect diagnosis and other, sometimes invasive, tests. We review briefly cTnI, its release and detection. We describe the various conditions that may cause an elevated cTnI level and give possible explanations for these findings, and we offer some guidelines for diagnosis in patients with an elevated cTnI.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponin I (TnI) is a sensitive and specific marker of myocardial injury, but little is known about its release after complex congenital heart surgery. We investigated whether TnI correlates with early clinical outcome in neonates undergoing the arterial switch operation (ASO) for transposition of the great arteries (TGA).
METHODS: Troponin I was measured serially up to 48 hours postoperatively in 31 neonates undergoing the ASO alone (simple TGA) and 9 neonates undergoing the ASO combined with other procedures (complex TGA) (eg, closure of a ventricular septal defect) and

All patients admitted to the coronary care unit with suspected acute coronary syndromes were evaluated by serial electrocardiography and blood draws on admission and at 4 and 12h from admission. Diagnosis was based on conventional WHO criteria. Samples were measured for creatine kinase (CK), cardiac troponin T (cTnT), myoglobin, CK isoenzyme MB (CK-MB) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI). A set of samples from individuals undergoing extreme endurance training was also examined. Analytical imprecision was consistent with published quality goals. Samples were stable for cTnI under a range of storage c

BACKGROUND: Non-specific elevations of creatine kinase isoenzymes (CK-MB) and cardiac troponin-T may be seen in renal failure, confusing the diagnosis of myocardial infarction. Cardiac troponin-I (cTn-I) has been shown to be specific for myocardial damage in several disease states, but has not been prospectively evaluated in the setting of renal failure.
METHODS: This prospective case series evaluated 56 patients with acute or chronic renal failure or end-stage renal disease to assess the sensitivity and specificity of cTn-I for detecting myocardial injury in this patient population. During a

Abdominal pain is a common chief complaint in Emergency departments (EDs) nationwide which presents a wide array of potential etiologies including acute coronary syndrome ( Daniels et al., 2020 ). High-sensitivity troponin I (hs-TnI), a biomarker traditionally linked to cardiac injury, can also be elevated in noncardiac conditions, such as acute cholecystitis. This case study underscores the advantages of hs-TnI over conventional troponin tests, specifically among patients with abnormal ECGs. This case also highlights the hs-TnI superior sensitivity in detecting or excluding subtle myocardial

Although cardiac pathology and consequently elevated serum cardiac troponin I (cTnI) have been reported, clinically it remains difficult to diagnose cardiac involvement in canine babesiosis. Thus the use of cardiac biomarkers would be useful in determining if a dog with babesiosis also has concurrent cardiac dysfunction. The objectives of this study were to determine plasma N terminal brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in canine babesiosis and if it is correlated with cTnI. Three groups of dogs with babesiosis were used: mild uncomplicated (Group 1), severe uncomplicated (Group 2), and comp
