BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE: Melanoma accounts for 3% of all skin cancers but causes 83% of skin cancer deaths. The first step in treatment of melanoma is the removal of the lesions, usually by surgical excision. Currently most lesions are removed without intraoperative margin control. Post-operative methods inspect 1-2% of the surgical margin and are prone to sampling errors. In this study we evaluate the use of reflectance and fluorescence polarization imaging for the demarcation of melanoma in thick fresh skin excisions.

The CDKN2A gene has been implicated in cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) in about 40% of families with linkage to chromosome 9p21, while a small proportion of families have mutations in the CDK4 gene. In order to estimate the importance of these genes in the predisposition to CMM in Spanish families and patients we have analysed, by SSCA, a total of 56 subjects belonging to 34 CMM families, and nine patients with multiple CMM and other neoplasia. Dysplastic naevi (DN) are benign lesions with atypical features intermediate between that of common melanocytic naevi (CMN) and malignant melanoma (MM). We report seven patients who developed malignant melanoma either coincident with or before the diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or chronic lymphatic leukaemia. One patient died secondary to leukaemia, and chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression may have contributed to the development of metastatic melanoma in another patient. Immunosuppression, exposure to ultraviolet radiation and genetic factors may result in a host environment that is conducive to the development of both tumours in these patients.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and melanoma are the rare progeny of precancerous lesions that usually remain stable or regress. For SCC the sequence appears to include TP53 mutant clones in normal skin; dysplasia; carcinoma in situ; and SCC. When such lesions are contiguous, their TP53 mutations are consistent with a single clonal lineage. BACKGROUND: The autocrine motility factor receptor (AMFR), a specific receptor for AME, is considered to be related to the metastatic potential of tumor cells.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether AMFR is expressed on cutaneous malignant melanoma cells and has any relationship to clinical stage and metastatic ability.
METHODS: We performed an immunohistochemical study on 20 cases of cutaneous malignant melanoma using anti-AMFR antibody. AMFR was expressed in 9 cases (45%), and its expression had a tendency to correlate with the clinical stage and the presence of lymph node metastasis.
