Elevated Melatonin Levels Found in Young Myopic Adults Are Not Attributable to a Shift in Circadian Phase.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between refractive error, circadian phase, and melatonin with consideration of prior light exposure, physical activity, and sleep. METHODS: Healthy young myopic (spherical equivalent refraction [SER] ≤-0.50DS) and emmetropic adults underwent noncycloplegic autorefraction and axial length (AL) measures. Objective measurements of light exposure, physical activity, and sleep were captured across 7 days by wrist-worn Actiwatch-2 devices. Questionnaires assessed sleep quality and chronotype. Hourly evening saliva sampling during a dim-light melatonin onset (DL

Historicizing Modern Slavery: Free-Grown Sugar as an Ethics-Driven Market Category in Nineteenth-Century Britain.

OBJECTIVE: Circadian and sleep disruption may increase the risk and severity of SARS-CoV-2 infections, but the role of night shift work and disturbed sleep in the development of long-COVID remains inadequately investigated. We prospectively examined the association of night work and sleep disturbances with risk of long-COVID. METHODS: We followed participants of the COVICAT study, a population-based cohort of adults in Catalonia, Spain between 2021 and 2023. Night shift work and sleep characteristics were assessed in 2021. Long-COVID was defined as the report of persistent symptoms (>3 months

A clinical grade neurostimulation implant for hierarchical control of physiological activity.

Bioelectronic implants for neurostimulation aim to steer disordered neurophysiological processes back towards a healthy state. However, physiology is subject to biological rhythms, including the circadian rhythm and the sleep-wake cycle. These predictable rhythms affect disease symptomatology, biomarkers used in closed-loop therapies, and a physiological system's expected response to stimulation. Therefore, therapeutic devices should incorporate feedforward elements to align algorithm parameters with predictable changes in physiological state, as a parallel of physiological rheostatic control.

Sleep problems in university students - an intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Up to 60% of all college students suffer from a poor sleep quality, and 7.7% meet all criteria of an insomnia disorder. Sleep problems have a great impact on the students' daily life, for example, the grade point average. Due to irregular daytime routines, chronotype changes, side jobs and exam periods, they need specialized treatments for improving sleep. "Studieren wie im Schlaf" (SWIS; (studying in your sleep)) is a multicomponent sleep training that combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia and Hypnotherapy for Insomnia to improve students' sleep, insomnia symptoms a

Diving Into Diversity: Considering Intra-Specific Variation in Water Immersion Activity of Aquarium-Housed Magellanic Penguins.

Behavioral monitoring is essential for evaluating species-appropriate functioning, with growing recognition of the importance of understanding individual-level variation in modern zoos and aquariums. Yet animals housed in large groups, such as penguins, are seldom assessed at the individual level because of the practical difficulty of observing multiple individuals simultaneously. Using animal-borne immersion loggers, we quantified long-term (mean 233 days) and high-frequency (10-min intervals across 24 h) water-use patterns in 23 Magellanic penguins Spheniscus magellanicus housed at Sumida Aq

Associations of ambient air pollution exposure and sleep pattern with brain structures: A prospective study in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown associations between exposure to air pollution (AP) and total gray matter volume (GMV) and total white matter volume (WMV). However, no study has explored the impact of sleep conditions (sleep behaviors and sleep patterns) on the associations between AP and brain structures. METHODS: This study included over 21,000 participants from the UK Biobank. Neuroimaging data were processed to obtain measures of global brain volume, GMV, and WMV, as well as white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV). Land use regression model was utilized to estimate the concentra

Insomnia heterogeneity: Characteristics to consider for data-driven multivariate subtyping.

Meta-analyses and systematic reviews have reported surprisingly few consistent insomnia-characteristics with respect to cognitions, mood, traits, history of life events and family history. One interpretation of this limited consistency is that different subtypes of insomnia exist, each with its own specific multivariate profile of characteristics. Because previously unrecognized subtypes will be differentially represented in individual studies and dilute effect sizes of subtype-dependent characteristics of importance, they are unlikely to be reported consistently in individual studies, let alo

Nested case-control study of night shift work and breast cancer risk among women in the Danish military.

OBJECTIVES: Growing but limited evidence suggests that night shift work is associated with breast cancer. The authors conducted a nationwide case-control study nested within a cohort of 18,551 female military employees born in 1929-1968 to investigate the risk for breast cancer after night shift work and to explore the role of leisure time sun exposure and diurnal preference. METHODS: The authors documented 218 cases of breast cancer (1990-2003) and selected 899 age-matched controls from the cohort by incidence density sampling. Information on shift work, sun exposure habits, diurnal preferen

Associations between wearable-device-measured daytime and nighttime light exposures and dementia risk: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying reliable predictors for dementia remains a critical unmet need. Light exposure plays a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms, which influence cognitive function. However, the association between light exposure and dementia risk remains unclear. AIMS: This study examined the associations of daytime and nighttime light exposure with dementia risk. METHODS: A total of 87 577 dementia-free participants (mean age: 62.36 years; 56.98% female) were included. Daytime and nighttime light exposures were measured using 7-day free-living wrist-worn accelerometry. Incident

Long-term night shift work and cardiometabolic health in healthcare workers: a review of mechanisms and precision intervention strategies.

Long-term night shift work has become one of the major risk factors for the cardiometabolic health of healthcare workers. Traditional perspectives have largely attributed this to sleep deprivation. However, recent studies have revealed that circadian misalignment itself constitutes an independent pathogenic factor. This article provides a systematic review of the epidemiological evidence, pathophysiological mechanisms, and precision intervention strategies in this field. Existing studies indicate a clear dose-response relationship between night shift exposure and cardiometabolic risk, with thi

Sleep traits and the longitudinal progression of cardio-renal-metabolic multimorbidity: A prospective study from UK-Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Cardio-renal-metabolic multimorbidity is defined as the coexistence of two or three cardio-renal-metabolic diseases, namely cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease. The association between sleep traits and cardio-renal-metabolic disease progression is often overlooked. Anxiety and depression may affect both sleep and cardio-renal-metabolic diseases, while their mediating role is unclear. METHODS: We conducted a multistate analysis using data from 375,837 UK Biobank participants (42.16% men, mean age 55.77 years, 95.37% White) to investigate the

Genetic correlation and mendelian randomization reveal the impact of sleep traits on urolithiasis risk.

Urolithiasis is a common and recurrent condition in the urological spectrum. Despite various proposed mechanisms, the causal relationship between sleep traits and the risk of urolithiasis remains unclear. We used publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data from the UK Biobank and FinnGen to perform a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and genetic correlation analysis, evaluating the causal relationship and genetic correlation between sleep traits (chronotype, getting up in the morning, sleep duration, nap during the day, and insomnia) and urolithiasis (ca

Mendelian randomization analyses of 23 known and suspected risk factors and biomarkers for breast cancer overall and by molecular subtypes.

Many risk factors have been identified for breast cancer. The potential causality for some of them remains uncertain, and few studies have comprehensively investigated these associations by molecular subtypes. We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to evaluate potential causal associations of 23 known and suspected risk factors and biomarkers with breast cancer risk overall and by molecular subtypes using data from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium. The inverse-variance weighted method was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for assoc
